There is a character limit and the image alone didn't fulfill that limit originally. Now it is traditional I suppose, because the image does have "so many uses".

This explains a lot.

That treaty is a farce! It was only signed by the most fascist of forums in order to limit the rights of the people. It failed to do any real good, but was rather written in order to make the most powerful forums look good . . . it's like the U.N. of the internet.

Following the Great Troll War, a group of the internet's largest and most powerful forums came together and signed the Flame War Treaty of 2004 to ensure that such a conflict would never happen again . . . or at least that's what the history books say. The true nature of the treaty is much more controversial.

This is what happens when the creators of something start ignoring the fanbase to do other things. Well, after the reimagining of the series with characters in the opposite genders, anyway

I bought the english translation yesterday, at the end there's a preview of a Haruhi manga, is it the good one or the one that sucks?

It's the good one. I believe the bad one got fed into a blender.

You can barely find images for it online.

I dunno, there are definite issues but it's not like it still carries most of the original charm of the story.

I don't get it; I've heard a lot of people saying there are "issues" but I haven't seen any specifics. Has anybody done a serious review, or can anybody point out any specific lines that are mistranslated or poorly phrased?

I didn't find anything wrong with the translation other than a few, miniscule things, the name of Yuki's Faction (I actually like this change because it's not as time consuming to say Data Overmind than thew other name), and the adding of quotation marks to some of Kyon's "thoughts".

Actually, I rather enjoyed the book. Please point out what you thought was wrong with it.

Yeah, I'd like to know what you thought was wrong with it, too. I thought that it was pretty good overall, except for a couple minor things that have already been mentioned (the change to "Data Overmind", for example, or Kyon saying "unfreakingbelievable"). None of those points are really terrible, they're just...different.

There's nothing wrong with the novel translation beside the inevitable nitpicks. The only "issues" with it are the typical "I need an excuse why I'm not buying it so I'm going to overexaggerate piddly personal issues other people had with it (since I haven't read it myself) or make up something wrong with it and hope no one calls me on it" issues.

I believe that was because they didn't have a good alternative for the japanese word "tameki" (or "sigh" in english) without making it sound funky.

Yeah, the ambiguity of whether he was saying something aloud or just thinking it was a big part of the narrative style, so making some of it explicitly "out loud" took away from that.
