Thudercats is a tough one to classify since it was created by an american, but animated by a japanese studio, but shown exclusivly in the U.S (at least when it was created). Anime News Service refers to it as a Half-Anime.

Farming the animation out to Japan was common at the time as a way to cut cost. G.I. Joe had its animation done by Toei. I wouldn't consider that enough to call it anime.

using japanese animation companies for american cartoons is pretty commonplace
hell, Teen Titans even has a japanese singing duo sing the theme song (in Engrish no less) but it's still american
a lot of anime we know has had animation done in Korea after all

Transformers seasons 1-3, the first movie, and the extra shitty Rebirth three-parter are not anime, despite being aired in Japan with a Japanese dub/edit/cultural changes, and having some assistance from Toei. It's writers, directors, voice actors (to start with), storyboarders, infact, anyone who did anything important was an American. The koreans/Chinese animated it. Anything else though, besides Beast Wars and Beast Machines is Anime. And also sucks.

Yeah, well, so was "Batman Beyond" and "The Real Ghostbusters", and nobody in their right mind would call those anime, or even "half-anime".

That's very interesting, I had no idea! But thundercats is done in an anime style of art. Or at least I think it was, it's been so long. I guess it depends on what you consider to be anime. We all know that the Japanese consider any kind of animation, including disney movies like Little Mermaid to be anime. But in America, and probably most other countries, it is considered differently. Most people give the deffinition of anime as, "Japanese Animation" so literally since those shows are animated by Japanese, you could call it anime. But many people only consider it anime if they where made by Japanese for Japanese. I could ramble on about it forever, but my point is that I don't think there is a definate right answer. My personal opinion would be that it is not really anime, but just anime style.

America already has a word for all animation and that is cartoons. In conversation and just because we like to a disticition between home grown and foreign productions. So we started using japanimation. Later it was changed to anime.

I don't think there is one definitative style for anime, so I wouldn't use it to refer to style. Some people do, so it is up to each individual person to decide.

Don't be silly, anime means "animation" in Japanese, but in the United States you would never use "anime" to mean a regular cartoon.

I have to agree with Loki on this one, even though its kinda pointless to argue about. I personally refer all animated shows as anime. American made, Nihon made, whatever. Anime is just another way to call animated tv shows as is cartoons.

I noticed this topic while doing a search to make sure there wasn't already a topic about what I was gonna post and the views people have here really intrague me.

To me, anime as we know it, as what animesuki is devoted to, is still different from western animation. Japanese animation is far more than just an art style. So much of it has character development that surpasses novels, visual cues that surpass live movies and stories that are as timeless as a first kiss.

So, being the proud owner of every Thundercats episode, on Beta no less, I vote that in my opinion and based on my above-listed reasons, something like that wouldn't be anime.
