Thanks to the game I just play, not only the plotline but the theme as well.
Basically a reconstruction of super robot, where each and each sacrifice in a crapsack world ARE NOT meaningless. Contrasting hardass real robot such as Muv Luv where "Death is not a special event, just something happen in a battlefield".

Metro 2033 takes clever hits on all the "Ragnarok Proofing" tropes: Food is scarce since the only source of food are mushrooms, malnourished pigs, and there's no soil. Weapons are cobbled together and look like they're made of duct tape. Military grade/Pre-war ammo is rare and used as the currency, while dirty bullets are the norm (Every time you use pre-war ammo, you're shooting away money). Even the armor and tech is decrepit; no futuristic HUD's or power armor.

It presents the odd choice: Do I use my dirty bullets and give myself a harder time fighting, or use the military tech bullets and shoot my money away?
Having to fight through humans (Communist's, Nazi's, and Bandit's) along with Mutants (Demon dog, demon bat, demon mouse, or worse of all demon gorilla) make the game extremely bleak. Even after human's are at their last leg, they still fight each other over power and ideology.

Actually, it is fic related THe main inpiration for the TRULY crapsack future fic I had was based on that. Saito's dark future is based on Burn Notice, Laura's kids' is based on Fullmetal panic, etc etc. Besides, the sequel series seems to be going on a more hopeful note with the world starting to heal.
Side note - I thought you'd like a grimdark post apocalyptic world.

But as I said before, I don't like it when it ACTUALLY hopeless, you made it sound that way.
For me, Grimdarkness is good when there's light of hope, one of the main complaint in my 40K fic is that the characters are damn optimistic. Mind you I can't blame anyone since the fanbase is there for eternal war, not for pursuing peace.

...Well yeah, the ending of the novel is damn depressing, but the spin off novels and side materials show the world is healing. And the PC game, which is widely more known, has a bittersweet ending and leads to Metro Last Light, where the MC (Artyom) is finding a "prisoner" that can supposedly grant peace to all the faction's.
Side note - Been a while since you've written something.

So, I wonder what if Ichika blurt something like what Ling said, but with straighter meaning, the echo will be even more ironic for Houki.
Houki's father offhandedly said hell happy if Ichika inherit the Shinonono style along with Houki, Ichika said he'd like to. Houki caught the implication, he didn't...

Biggest conflict ball so far: Ichika actually snapped out since they're put all the blame on him, and once he sulk, he could sulk for WEEKS.
The armor piercing question delivered by Dan: "Have you ever consider HIS feeling about everything?", the answer is obvious.
