compressing a file even smaller
hey guys-im trying to send a music file over to alphatrance to see if josh can figure out the melody for me, but the problem is that the music file itself is huge-23.6 MB, even thought the song itself is only about 3 mins long. ridiculously high quality music. anyhow, even with winrar, its about 12 MB. the problem is that i cant send the file as an attachment o anything because the limit for yahoo mail, gmail, or my college server is 10 Mbs. can anyone tell me how i can either make the file smaller or an email that lets me send files larger than 10 MBs?

Try with the latest PAQ compressor.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PAQ But I warn you... it's SLOWWW!!! And people who have to spend days uncompressing the file won't be anywhere near happy. |

Why not transcode it to a high-quality but lossy format? Sounds like you're starting off with a lossless file of some kind. A 320kbit MP3 or something would be transparent and come in under the 10MB limit, I believe.

MP3 should die (it's an ancient format), especially 320 CBR, which should be disintegrated (it's just overkill, and VBR gets better quality/size ratio). Why not suggest Ogg Vorbis, AAC or Musepack? Since I don't want to start any format war, to the OP: just use the split rar method. It's easiest.

Here's another alternative. Use a file upload site like YouSendIt where you can upload up to 100-MB files for free and up to 2 GB if you pay. There are plenty of other sites for temporary file uploads (RapidShare being another one).

www.oxyshare.com lets you upload 700mb per file. If you register you can upload via ftp. Great for DDL hosting. Uploads are fast downloads are good. If you pay you get faster speeds. on downloads and uploads.
