Roy Khan's performance in that song was great. Really good across the scale. I thought it sounded kind of odd in some sections, but when I listened to it again, it sounded pretty good.
If only these voices were set to some more elaborate instrumentals in a grand musical composition rather than a solo or "pop singer" setting. Those live performance videos aren't really my taste, but the thread's about beautiful singing voices. I find myself liking songs with more of a rock/metal sound. I've found my tastes transitioning to something more symphonic sounding, from Incubus, Garbage, Linkin Park, Evanescence, Flyleaf and Fireflight, Scar Symmetry, etc. to Nightwish, Lacuna Coil, Leaves Eyes, Epica... that video of Within Temptation is practically dead on to what my tastes prefer. It's very nice to see the art of music taken that far. +props to ZGoten for showing me that. Here's one song, Ai no Zuellni, that I like that's sung by many different singers. I like the version with the original male voice (not "Layton's") and "Mayshen's" voice. It's not one of my favorites, but it's very touching and I really like the general composition of the song. I'd like to hear it sung by some of the others here. Edit: Really? A version by Felli Loss (Nakahara Mai)? I can't find it. She has a nice soft and young voice, but I don't think she's a good match to some of the more energetic upbeat parts (Mayshen doesn't do too well either). If it was done by someone in Kokia's league... Last edited by Varaxis; 2010-11-05 at 17:13. |

Just to give you some "out there" suggestions that might help you expand the notion of vocal "beauty", here are voices that do not typically jump to mind when people think of 'the best singers'. Maynard is the most technically proficient in the list I'm recommending, but all of them are extremely emotionally charged.
Ralph Stanley Spoiler:
Skip James Spoiler:
Maynard James Keenan Spoiler:
Clarence Greenwood Spoiler:

For me it would be...
Female: - Nino (ROUND TABLE feat. Nino) -->> Hearing her singing could make me relax ^^ - Chihiro Yonekura -->> I find that her voice is sexy and she could do a very high pitch. Male: - Ken Hirai -->> His voice character is very unique to me. - Wada Kouji -->> Has a soft voice character, which is rare for me (based from all songs I've heard)

I almost forgot to mention my candidate for OP of 2010, "Sign of Love" from Saraiya Goyou. The compelling rhythm works so well with the zooming camera, not to overlook the lovely performance by immi. Her voice sounds so Japanese yet the inflections feel so Western. (This contrast appears in the soundtrack as well when the accordions play.)
I wanted to link to the entire episode in hopes of encouraging more of you to watch this excellent show, but embedding is forbidden. So I've included just the OP and hope you'll follow the link above and watch episode one. It's a tough choice between this and Cross Game for anime of 2010.

I had the chance to hear Iwasaki Hiromi on live yesterday and I have to say I was mesmerized by her voice. I can't find any words that could describe what I felt during the live concert. It's really a totally different experience to hear a great singer on live than listening to them from a recording.

Since you posted Kalafina I'm guessing you're already familiar with FictionJunction Wakana.
How about Hayley Westenra? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oewp-s_4wZQ |

Hmm, so I came across this version of one of Fukuyama Masaharu's new songs with the instrumentals taken out, and I thought it really showed off his nice vocals. The falsetto worked this time! Whooo!
