Satelight: Studio discussion, speculation and whatnot

Since this year(2012) has Satelight involved in such series as Mouretsu Pirates, Aquarion EVOL, AKB0048 and they are involved in the Summer series Muv-luv Alternative: Total Eclipse as well as co-producing Senki Zesshou Symphogear and I noticed they don't have a thread yet, I knew this studio needed a thread.

Some history on this studio, which has worked on Macross Frontier and The Genesis of Aquarion:

Quote:
The studio was founded on December 1995, in Sapporo, Hokkaidō, their first project being Bit the Cupid, the world's first fully digitally-animated television series. The name Satelight consists of S for Sapporo, A for Animate, T for Technology and E for Entertainment. The company's president is Michiaki Satō. Noted anime director and creator Shōji Kawamori is an executive director at the studio.

In 1996, the studio's next project was producing the CG animation for Group TAC's Īhatōbu Gensō: Kenji no Haru. It soon established a production studio in 1998 in Suginami, Tokyo. The studio soon produced their first television series, Kawamori's Chikyū Shōjo Arjuna in 2001. In 2006, the studio changed its headquarters from Sapporo to Tokyo.

The animation studios GOHANDS(Mardock Scramble) and 8-Bit(Infinite Stratos) are comprised of former Satelight animators and team members.

Satelight has also worked on Fairy Tail and Shugo Chara!

I... don't like anything they do. Maybe this will change with Pirates, if I can be bothered to go back with it.

OP, you should mention that GOHANDS and 8-Bit have split from Studio Satelight.

Archon, you should watch Noein.

Oh Satelight where to begin? I don't understand why we can't be friends. I love your CG work, I think it's among the best out there right now actually. I love sci-fi and you do a lot of sci-fi, and yet I just can't get into your shows because there's something so overwhelmingly commercial about the consideration that goes into them and they always seem to come up lacking in the end. I don't really care for J-Pop idol themes which seem to have become a staple of Satelight shows of late and you guys have that disproportionately female cast thing going on something fierce. Also aside from Macross Frontier your shows just never seem to go anywhere and do that meandering time wasting thing with your scripts and time usage that I just loathe to see.

It doesn't look like they're going to be winning me over anytime soon either since their next show is AKB0048, which is yet another J-Pop idol themed show with a sci-fi twist.

Satelight is also known for producing some epic-fail animated shoujo titles, like Kamichama Karin, in which fans are even more angry than Samurai Deeper Kyo.

I don't know much about Satelight, but I do know a bit about Kawamori, who was pretty much the father of the Macross franchise which I adore. Though Macross 7 does not exist in my eyes. Nope.

I guess I should give Satelight credit for making the Macross Zero OVAs which were fantastic and the best of the franchise alongside the original SDF series. Frontier is a bit of a mixed bag since it was the first one to introduce "moe" on a large scale, but it was still good overall. Other works though... I'm not as keen. I consider Aquarion a so bad its good show and not legit good

I'll edit that in a little later, Westlo. Thanks for reminding me about GOHANDS and 8-Bit.

I like EVOL a lot. If I'm not mistaken Ikkoku Meiro no Croisee is also Statelight right?

Yeah, it's also done by Satelight.

Satelight is one of those few studio that can talk to most studios about how to do overall animation correctly. Unfortunately, their stories don't tend to resonate with wider range of viewers. There always seem to be a target audience in mind whenever they undertake a show. I agree with Westlo that Noein is their only work that stands out above all of their shows they have worked on. As far as animation goes with superb CG in the mix of things, there are only handful (2-3) of studios that can match Satelight. If you want your anime to look pretty and shiny and lots and lots of visual porn, then Satelight is the studio you tend to go with. Hellsing Ultimate, Macross Zero (the awesome animated porn. There is one fight where you simply hold your breathe and marvell at the animated motion), Noein, Symphogear, Basquash (the very-commercial-feel-to-it anime Kaio was talking about), Macross Frontier (TV Series, Second Movie) to name a few that has absolutely stunning overall visual, animated and static. Also, watch Mardock Scramble if you haven't already. You will hear yourself gulp just for the visual alone.

Noein was the only Satelight show that I found appealing until I watched Ikoku Meiro no Croiseé. You'll find some interesting postings in the thread here by one of the animators and some links to a blog containing preliminary artwork. They invested an enormous amount of effort in re-creating 19th century Paris. Luckily for them a lot of buildings from that period still exist today, though apparently they also relied on antique postcards as well.

I can't recall ever seeing anyone who actually worked on an anime series post in a thread here before.

Oh wow I am kicking myself that I missed that the French staff that worked on the show posted here. I don't know where I was but that is so neat.

Anyways I can't say I am a big fan of this studio but I do love Ikoku no Meiro Croisee. Noein would probably be a 2nd favorite (although I don't like that nearly as much as Croisee).

I'm not a fan of Satelight, but Symphogear and Fairy Tail are the only series I liked and I watched. Too bad, there's some titles that have epic fail animation in it.

Are satelight a bit tight on schedule with AKB0048 about to start and Aquarion evol still running?

Evol's second OP kind feels like the the staff went "no time to make a second OP lets just use scenes from the past episodes to make it"

Aquarion is running late, but then again, schedule management has never been Satelight's strong suit.

Then again, Ikoku Meiro was completely in the can before the premiere aired.

I must honestly admit I had never even heard of the studio before encountering the thread, as I'm not very particular about which studios I watch, outside of the few that demand my attention whenever they release anything. (Kyoto, Shaft, Gainax for me.)

Looking at their list of works, it's a whole bunch of shows I've never seen, but I did coincidentally finish Noein just last week. That was a masterful show, and the art-style was a thing of beauty. I also liked Guin Saga and Kiddy Girl, and along with just about everyone else, loved Macross Frontier.

Looking at those shows, they animate a great deal of very different styles, but as others having pointed out before me, there's a definite focus on science fiction.

Well, they made Noein, which was absolutely amazing. Such a shame it never even went to cult classic-like popularity, but whatever.

Apart from that, they make mecha series that suits to my tastes. Then again, my mecha tastes... no scratch that, my taste in anime was pretty much shaped by the original Macross (my first anime ever), whose leading man went on to make Satelight. So no brainer, huh?

And with Okada on board (I'm an Okadafag) with their two latest original works, currently my favourite studio (sorry JC Staff as you ain't airing anything I like this cour).

And while the same can pretty much be said for Mouretsu Pirates, it's more of a staff thing. I believe Yasuda Kenji's Shugo Chara was also reported to have an unusual amount of episodes in advance on the broadcast back in the day, which was a reason given as to why it actually looked good for a kids show. On the other hand, I'm pretty sure you'd never see this happen with a series Kawamori's involved in.

The schedule has to be tight on EVOL and AKB0048, but as it's been said, this is nothing new for Satelight and they should pull it off without us noticing anything. AKB0048 ep1 was finished two weeks before the broadcast, while I think Symphogear was looking even worse from the beginning (not to mention the two shows are certainly not going to get the same amount of attention/workforce in the studio). As for the EVOL 'OP', I thought it was reported to start on episode 17 so maybe they just decided to get the song out a week before the actual animation, though this is just me throwing a wild guess.
