My guess is that the buzz got going after the climax in episode 3 which got a lot of people to check out Magi. This is really amazing though.

I doubt anyone cares about Yoshino in that time slot.

And it isn't surprising the ratings are good. There's no tricks about it, it's just a really good shounen show and kids love that kinda thing.

Additionally, once Sinbad and his generals appear the series will also attract the fushouji, securing good dvd sales as well. This series is a winner all around.

These are the best ratings the slot has had since FMA..not even AoEx got close to a 5.1.

Recently posted on 2ch. I haven't been paying much attention to the ratings thread lately so I couldn't say if it's confirmed information, but it looks legit to me:

Magi (TBS, Sunday 17:00, Kantou)
Ep. 1 - 3.8%
Ep. 2 - 3.3%
Ep. 3 - 3.8%
Ep. 4 - 5.1%
Average rating up to ep. 4 - 4.0%

While the adaptation is not looking like a complete hit (yet?) on all fronts - see the merely "OK" DVD/BD pre-orders, for example, which seem to indicate that much like the English community, the Japanese viewers are not all completely sold on the adaptation - the series is still largely succeeding in certain areas. The ratings are one of them, as this would be Nichigo's strongest average performance since Gundam 00 S2, if they are confirmed.

Video research weekly top 10 is out. Magi isn't in it so we'll have to wait to know the rating however we're sure that it's under 4.6%.

Also, Toriko is out of the top 10 for the first time in its run.

It's slightly better than last week, but I don't think it hits so high. Maybe something will change that makes it boosting if not higher than the early noitaminA days' ratings.

Nichigo shows are always slow on discs. Sales for them don't start to pick up until they're closer to release. Look at history for AoEx, SD, and FMA for examples.

To be fair, there have been shows like Avatar: The Last Airbender that have been a big hit here in the US. I'm sure a lot of people watched Toonami, or at least shows like Pokemon as well. Sazae-san's ratings are ridiculous, but maybe ratings like One Piece's and Precure's aren't too far off from some popular shows in America.

Even in Japan, anime tv ratings nowadays are ridiculously small compared to previous decades, mainly because of Japan's decreasing population and because kids don't watch anime as much as they used to. I remember reading demographic breakdown stats on 2ch, a show like Detective Conan would get around 45-55 in the kids demographic in the 90s-early 00s where as nowadays it's around 15-20 in that demographic.

5.6 (OP rerun)
2.9 (Chuggington)
6.5 (Toriko)

10.8 (Shin-chan)
1.7 (Battle Spirits)
5.4 (Kamen Rider)
5.3 (Precure)

Silly question, but are these numbers like Nielsen ratings? If so, are they taken from the total number of TV owners or only the people who were watching TV at the time of airing? The first page of the thread didn't seem to explain much.
