From spoilers, Battler was an unwilling accomplice. He was supposedly told to kill Shannon to prove he's serious, but he didn't do it, and he tried to escape with her.

Honestly, I'm not too excited for EP 8. Both endings are downers, Kyrie and Rudolph are the culprits, Battler's apparently in love with Shannon, one of my favorite characters isn't real (I expected this) and the other one's dead (why Jessica?), and it seems some questions still don't have a clear answer. I'm still gonna buy it.

So, it really all happened in Battler's mind, huh? I can't say that I didn't see it coming, but the fact that he was apparently an accomplice kind of irritates me. Are you certain that he was writing the episodes himself in therapy? Does that include the message bottles?

And plot-convenient amnesia: the best kind of amnesia there is.

So ultimately, I am satisfied and outraged and sad and happy and slightly confused at the same time with this.

Battler didn't really want to be an accomplice. Plus he didn't kill anybody; there was only one person he was told to kill, but he simply didn't do it and said he did. He probably would have tried to save everyone else if he could, especially if guns and a time bomb weren't involved.

And as far as I myself am concerned, episodes 1 and 2 were written by Yasu; Hachijo wrote 3, 4, and probably 5 and 7 by herself; and Battler wrote 6 and 8. Oh, and Hachijo's real name is Ikuko Yoshiro, and she and Battler wrote all their stories under the pen name "Toya Hachijo."

I think it would be safe not to make absolute conclusions about the stuff you read on that livejournal and on /jp/ until you're sure you're getting it from a valid source, or have played the game yourself.

So Kyrie and Rudolph really did kill everyone over money? My god. If this weren't the last episode, I would be calling such bull. How would this have been avoided if Battler came back one year earlier or later? What about Kanon/Shanon? The love trial? George's motivations? Who killed Nanjo in episode 3? The closed room in episode 6? What the hell, man? I know I'll probably appreciate the episode for what it is, but I expected some resolution from the mysteries presented so far. I guess Battler was right. It's all useless.

I should probably just say that so far it seems that all this discussion about the depressing conclusion with Battler, Kyrie, Rudolph etc. might be the purported bad end of the game when you don't achieve the correct truth.

As such, if there really is more than one ending, I doubt this is the true ending.

For better or worse, as of now, this is our True End. In the Bad End, Ange is told bluntly and in Red by almost everyone what is what happened in Rokkenjima, but Ange was unable to accept that truth. She decided that the world and the Red Truth were wrong. She decided to create her own Red Truth with her blood, and thus, she committed suicide.

As for the True End, I think you'll have to read the full story or read more spoilers to grasp the whole thing. How can I put it? As a story, is not really bad, in fact, it's a really heart-warming story about a broken man, who's lost everything and who's trying to piece himself together again, finally being able to succeed at the end. I swear, the final exchange of words between him and Beato (whether it occurred or not, or however it may have occurred if it did occur) was seriously too nice. I was honestly moved.

Of course, as mystery is related, I'll put it bluntly, Umineko is no mystery novel at all. I don't know if R07 thinks this count as one, but in my opinion, no matter how you may look at this work, it simply doesn't fall into the category. Sure, there were several puzzle, and an apparent mystery, but in the end, for the overall story, the mystery mattered very little. In fact, as far as the reader is concerned, finding out what actually happened in Rokkenjima is simply not possible. We can, indeed, find out who Beato is and her plan, but, in the end, whatever her plan may have been, the incident in Rokkenjima is not Beato's fault. In fact, she didn't even plan things turning out this way.

Ange hears the barrage of red either way, no matter Good or Bad Ending. What matters is how she deals with it. After the final struggle against Bern is over, if you choose "MAGIC," then it goes to a good end and she deals with her problems fine (I presume; at least, there was no suicide in this end and it was all happy music and happy text). However, if you choose "TRICK," then she murders Kawabata and Amakusa while on the boat and either shoots herself or jumps into the propellers, not sure which.

The Magic End unlocks the Tea Party and the ???, the Trick End does not.
