Pretty uneventful episode. Nothing especially interesting about the camera. We learn that Ai's mom used to be a deliquent, and there's a cute moment between Ai and Isami. Kosagi is still up to the same old same old, though my jaw dropped when she took out the pipeline in the end. (Poor Kuina!)

Now THIS is where the shit hits the fan! One of the freakish air ships shows up in current Hakodate, and, well, poor Kuina again.

Good thing Noein is back again, I was kinda dumbfounded when the rather big revelation that he was yet another Yuu was basically ignored (or is it that Haruka didn't hear that phrase either time?). Of course, the name of the ep sorta throws things into doubt, but, hey, it certain looks exciting!

There's an interesting interview with the director here. (In Japanese.)

When I read that the director found the idea of things being true only when they are observed interesting, I *finally* got the connection between Schroedinger's cat and that thing about what Haruka sees is what comes true... In that interview he said "量子論では観察することによって存在が確定する（※1）という考えがあり面白いなと" - "I found this notion in quantum physics, where something exists because it has been observed, quite interesting"

So it's like Schroedinger's cat where you don't know if it's dead or not until you've seen it.

Although I don't know where to go from that... dead brain... slooow... waiting eagerly for ep 17, I've seen screencaps of it and it looks good enough. Though ep 18 seems like it's going to be even better, it's got an interesting title...

I actually thought there was a fair bit going on, and though they didn't really ramp up the drama and action really, there were quite a few surprises...

Really didn't expect Kuina to make a move on Kosagi, and then her reaction in the end.

Although the battle between Kosagi and Karasu wasn't quite as intense as say the Fukurou or Atori battles, I really like the style of how it played out.

I wish I understood the conversation between Amamiku and Kosagi better, it's clear Amamiku's been sent down to the slums for her failure with Haruka.


Also in this epsiode: I think we clearly have a confirmation that Haruka is in much greater control of the Torque now, which was something I mentioned I thought might be happening earlier, but seems to be in greater proof now. Notice how after her initial shock, she instantly reacts with confidence to Kosagi's arrival and defends herself with the Torque, Haruka's clearly getting stronger.


Question: When Kuina and Kosagi are talking in the Navigator's room in Lacryma, what the heck is the large organic crane-like object drawing down? It looks like a body in white robes? It's kind of hard to tell with the picture quality...

Not exactly, but close.

Untill you've opened up the box, the cat is both alive and dead, because the probabilities of it being alive and being dead are equal.

But when you see it, it stops being both and becomes something coherent, either this or that. So, the fact that we observe something makes it less "ambiguous" and more "real".

But the point is similar.

Wow, 17 was actually a great episode. I disargee that the fight was less dramatic than Fukurou vs. Karasu. Of course, that one had extra friends-fighting-against-each-other drama added to the mix, but I though that Kosagi and Karasu managed to have a fight that was unlike all the previous ones.

Karasu vs. Isuka was in the forest. Karasu vs. Atori were mostly air battles. Karasu vs. Fukurou was fought over the bay.

Karasu vs. Kosagi seemed to be a first true urban fight. I loved the way they used man-made things in their fight, like evading through the strrets and fighting on an airplane wing.

Very cool, in my opinion.

And I am very much interested in what Amamiku had to say. Something about dimensions and electron spin...

And about the schrödingers cat: its not equally likely for it to be death or alive. You CAN calculate the propobilitly of it being alive. Obviously it WILL drop with time.
But only if you take a look, it will be realized.

Take as a example the young double slit experiment, with electrons:
You send electrons against those slits, and each is observed as a dot on a screen.
If you close one slit for 5 second, you will get a peak on a screen behind the one left open (a Sinc-peak, to be sure). Close that one, and you get a peak behind the other.
This is because you observed (by chosing only to open one slit) where the electron went to. This is similar to opening the cage.

But what happens when both are open? You dont observe, so electrons go through BOTH slits, virtually. And thus, the chance of getting dots on the screen isnt the sum of those two peaks, but gets interference patterns.
And to show this isnt wave interference i took electrons as example, as you can see one dot on the screen appear after another, seemingly independent... but when you add up enough of them you get the "big picture", i.e. the effects of the "non-knowledge" in the path of the particles.

Wow, the fight in episode 17 was great - short, but very full of action and I liked the way they just swooped everywhere.

Hmmm that's a good thought, it's just one minor detail that makes me think otherwise:

Kuina is the first one to say to Kosagi.. "You're always thinking about Karasu" after Karasu originally returned to Lacryma with Haruka and was then imprisoned. Ever since episode 17, it has made me think that that scene was intended to offer more than just a clue of Kosagi's motives, a subtle layering of revelations.

However you are certainly right, Kuina is clearly desperate in Lacryma, and he has serious confidence problems in the future, evinced by his exchanges with Noein. Kuina sees the world crumbling around him, and he is one of the few with the skills to escape that world, so it's natural he'd want to take the only one left with him who's in a similar situation.

But yeah, personally I think that scene mentioned above is at least a sign that Kuina had some serious interest in Kosagi before.

Ah, episode 17! Someone said that not much happened. Whaaa? Let's see...

We see the first bloom in this world of the romance between Ai and Isami. We see a potential romance between Kuina and Kosagi, and we get rocked by what looks like its end. We get a chance to worry that Kosagi really will take Haruka to Lacrima. We see that Ai has been sent to the slums, and we get to speculate on what the apparent death of Fukurou means to her. We see that apparent white-clad body being lowered into the tank. We see another kick-ass combat, with the very cool slipping through a tram-car in stopped time and fighting on the wings of a plane. We see that Haruka now has more control of the torc. We see that Shangri-la keeps lurking.

Isn't that enough?

Have I mentioned how much I love the OP? I have found myself watching it all the way through every week, something I don't do for many OPs. Music-image-voice: all great.

As one Japanese-language learner, I want to thank Shirakawa Akira for the scripts.

And thanks to wao for the link to the interview with the director, who among other things confirms that he is using the word noein from the Greek, by way of the early 20th-century philosopher Heidegger, to mean perception of what is. He thought that gave it an interesting sound.

I'm not really the person to say, but since I just posted about it, I'll take a stab. There was a long discussion about it earlier in the thread where people may know more than I.

Noein (originally noeein) is a word used in ancient Greek philosophy. It basically means "to perceive," or "to notice." Heidegger apparently took it as part of his philosophy, to mean the perception of what actually exists, as opposed to just an idea or something.

Maybe others can explain better, but that meaning certainly would fit here.

Man, do I really have to defend my own personal impressions of an ep?

The ep wasn't bad, but I've never been drawn to Kosagi as a character, and I find her whole "OH NOES, I love Karasu but CAN'T ADMIT IT!" to be tiresome. Veeeery tiresome.

The fight was great, as every Noein fight is, but aside from the cool swooping it wasn't mindbendingly orgasmic or anything.

As I noted, Ai and Isami had a cute moment, but their relationship has been highlighted before. It was sweet, and I loved it, but it wasn't exciting or particularly new.

Nothing of great note happened with the camera. Kosagi acted like she has in every other ep that's highlighted her. Haruka's gaining more control over her powers, but that isn't anything new either.

Again, it wasn't a bad ep. It was a good ep. But compared to how I felt about it (entertained) and then compared to how I felt about the ep 18 preview (HOLY SHIT), there's a difference there, and I was just trying to state how I felt.

Yes, speaking of story progress, episode 17 was a bit disappointing, expecially after the semi-recap episode 16. But I think that next one will be very interesting!

I don't think Yuu of that space-time died. I was thinking that maybe, regardless of what happened to Haruka, he eventually became Noein.
