Well, I was partly right. It's a tournament but, apparently, it's not battle oriented. On a good note, we're actually gonna have a training arc and get some sensical power-ups once and for all!

Given experiences of recent arcs, I would deem it wise to postpone the judgement of sensical power-up till such actually truly happens (well tbh, it just did, with Grandine passing on some spells XD - for now, this is a S I N G U L A R occurence, however. Might as well label it freak accident. /end sarcasm. )

What are you saying? Ever since the Tenrou Island arc began, I figured it would focus on the members of Fairy Tail putting their personal strengths and ideals to the test, and feature a few life lessons being learned along the way. It just so happened that it involved a "formal" test being ruined by the arrival of a guild filled with people who like to god-mod. While the official exam was ultimately canceled, it really didn't matter whether any of the participants became S-Class in the end. Getting the rank may have given a boost of confidence to the one who would've attained it, but it would have done little else other than grant them permission to take on tough jobs alone. As unintentional as it was, the fight against Grimoire Heart was as good a test as any, if not more effective, as everyone managed to pass to some degree whereas only one person would have passed if the original test weren't interrupted. I mean, look at Juvia. She failed the test miserably after losing to Erza, but that's because she didn't have a super-set goal at the time. Then Meldy showed up, and when Juvia realized her friends were in danger, she had her shining moment. Even Erza noticed how radically different she was behaving against Meldy, an opponent who had just beaten Juvia to the ground, compared to their previous fight.

Oh god, it feels so wrong to see Droy and Jet to stick around Levy like a pedo. I mean they are more than 25 years old and compared to their age Levy is still chick. Ah their relationship now just seem really wrong. At least to me of course lol. Also Droy needs to lose some weight >:3

Nooooo!
Why? Lucy already had enough fanservice clothes, but that getup is more ridiculous than the last. She's wearing clip on sleeves, it'd be too much for her to buy an actual shirt? My dream of Competent but cute Lucy further crushed Waves white flag. Lucy is Fan-service Girl... you win this round Mashima but sooner or later you'll have to make her a decent fighter...shakes fist. I don't mind Fan-Service every so often. BUT C'MON! Jokes were funny with her though.

Don't you know, less clothes you have on, more powerful you are. Just look at Gray and Erza.

Erza usually wears a full suit of armor. I wish I wasn't so attached to Lucy from the beginning chapters, then this stuff wouldn't faze me. She went from intelligent/cute >>> useless Fan-Service but still a great character outside of fighting.

They had to do something against those FT jerks spamming the NoKill IslandTreeSpirit .hack which possibly was in effect even in Fiore.
Edit: Serious question. Is that tree still around? Because I think it might be but I'm to lazy to go back and check. I think it still is.

With FT, it's a bit different. Fairy Tail was, if not the #1 guild, was fairly high on the list. The few times we saw other mages, they were generally weaker. I think the only exception was Jura, and the top dark guild of OS. And even then, FT mages were generally about the equal of the dark guilds; and it makes sense that the strongest dark guilds would rise to the top. Thus, we can assume the other dark guilds are very weak (witness Lucy taking down a dark guild by herself). And yet, now we find out that FT is at the bottom, despite the fact that it's members are about equal in strength to the top core that disappeared. While I can partially wave this away as some of the younger ones growing up, FT did have older members in the guild prior to the timeskip. And yet, they supposedly came in last every time in the previous contests(afraid to even go anymore). There is a very direct increase in magical power in the world. I am willing to accept the explanation that Mashima is just doing it for the lulz with no big plan... but I can't help wondering if there is a reason for this. Despite what Hades may have believed, his mages were exceptionally strong and *did* beat several top FT members into the ground. His beliefs about the 7 kin being closer to the source of magic, resonates with me as a possible explanation. Has Earthland itself moved closer to the source of magic in the past 7 years? And thus the core cast missed out on receiving 7 years worth of "magical radiation doses" that everyone else got? Could possibly be nothing, but it really doesn't feel like the situation in Naruto. If nothing else, feels like an attempt by Mashima to increase the power of his villains, in order to give the cast room to grow and be challenged. Hades' group was the strongest yet, and yet FT finally managed to beat them. If this were DBZ, it's no problem to just make stronger and stronger villains so the fights are even with heroes who are training and get 10x stronger between arcs. |

Erza seems to have lost her plot armor. Girldartz, Mistogun have left. Laxus was banished. Markov is getting old and lazy. Mira and others have become happy-birds, or just hang out on the guild lately. Even with out the timeskip it would be strange if other guilds and the world in general weren't starting to feel less threatened by fairy tail. Which is in the end the whole meaning behind the title of "strongest".

I agree with Kaijo on this one. The 'kids' have been destroying adults easily. Only really super old people are the exception.
On the other hand, I agree with the person who said we should all move on with plot/battle critique. In this manga I find the characters are > plot/battles to the point I'm not even phased...except for Lucy, her battles are getting on my nerves. Specifically Leon and all the other insta-troll-summon without Lucy having to lift a finger. She should learn to summon them at will by just holding the key and it would make a better story than what's going on right now. At least make Lucy the one with the bright idea to save people. She is so under utilized by the mangaka it's not even funny. She literally has summons that were wiping the floor with them only an arc ago.

Oh that's not true at all.
In shonen the hero only certain to win the tournament when the final opponent is an evil villain and lives are on the line. I mean Dragon Ball practically wrote the book on shounen and it took Goku three tries to win(The only time where he was fighting an evil villian in the tournament). Then there's the last tournament of Yu-yu hakusho; the main characters didn't even make it too the finals. And then there's Naruto where not only did Naruto not win, but they never really even finished. While the Sabertooths are clearly gonna be antagonists, they have not been labeled evil villains by any stretch. In fact if those two dragon slayers are real dragon slayers then they are practically destined to become friends. So I would say there IS a decent chance that fairy tail will loose

Aside from Lucy fanservice, a convenient Edolas double-dragon and continuing to ignore one of my favorite (Lucy) character's growth as a legitimate Mage, it was a pretty good chapter. The story picked up and I am happy to see a tournament, kind of hoping for a whole story arc at the Coliseum and the drama unfolding there.
