Where's your sister at? The US base closest to the epicenter is Misawa AB; Yokosuka/CFAY is on second. Hope they're okay.

Damn. Well, as pointed out earlier, Tokyo and Japan in general is part of the infamous Ring of Fire, meaning they're prepared. And I was also thinking of Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 (oh, the irony...)

I still hope that all those affected by this are alright, no matter how prepared they might've been. Also, what's the official reading? I've seen 8.9 on a source, but I'm seeing other measurements around

There are still some strong aftershock near the original epicenter at the coast of Miyagi prefecture.
I heard reporting fatality of 10 in the Iwate prefecture north of the epicenter.
The tsunami is doing most of the havoc.

The American California and Oregon coasts are just now being upgraded to *warning* from *watch*. That means evacuations will be starting -- the buoy systems are not giving us happy data.

The original quake is currently assessed at 8.9 -- the fifth strongest in recorded history. Earlier estimates were a bit lower. The first aftershock was 7.something.

I have friends and distant relatives in several locations near Sendai and that region -- but I hope everyone over there got as much warning as they could.

That's some serious shit. I mean, a massive tsunami on top of an 8.9 richter-scale earthquake? That's kicking them while they're down.

God bless those people in the radius of the affected area. I wish them the best of luck, and they'll be in my family's prayers, for sure.

Where are you getting your info from? I ask because I also live somewhat near the west coast (in Washington state) and would like to be sure I'm on top of things.

-Shopping malls are empty as shops are closed and residents are sitting down waiting for transport.

-Train stations are empty and people are commuting via walking.

-Pubs, clubs and bars are still opened

-10 to 20 Ambulance and a helicopter just passed through carrying injured patients.

-Traffic jams on the entire ward.

I'm getting data from a combination of NOAA and all the local news stations that are lit up on tv at the moment. Hawaii is now currently expecting a destructive tsunami based on their buoy data.... the DART system of buoys that warn us as well. They're telling Hawaiians with big boats to head out to sea now (safer out there for boats and fewer boats bouncing inland).

Currently, Washington State is still listed as "watch" rather than "warning" ... oops, typed too soon. Now, Washington has been added to the *warning* status.
