I was a bit curious about it myself. However, in the episode, Haruka did mention that she was willing to kill Mana, her daughter. Actually, it could be that the flashbacks were scenes after Mana "passed" away.

a) Mom has already given up on Mana, so rather than lamenting on what came out of her womb, she spent much more time with Shu who appeared far more normal compared to Mana. I personally like "b" better.

Muhahaha I knew it! I always thought that Shu was a coward but there was one trait that I noticed for a very long time (and had talked about it on certain blogs and also in this forum before) and that he's also very courageous by the fact that he never really runs away from anything. It's even more clear in this episode when he clearly have resolve without anyone's help. He just does what he believes in and have always done so from the beginning.
Now he can go back to kicking more asses! Yeah!

It's like having partial immunity to poison and continually taking that poison, while you still have partial immunity to it you don't know when it'll fuck you up, which will probably be the whole oh noes Shu is dead episode that's going to occur later on (though whether or not he actually dies will be up to the writers). |

So, this explained that why Gai or anyone didn't use the 3rd Genome. It seems that Shu is going to die in the end. It is either crystal cancer or dna rejection from Void Genome kill him in the process.
I guess Shu now can materialize any void weapons as long he makes a contact with the hosts. |

Shuu's gonna die. How else can he become Shuu Vii Britannia? Oh well. He's gonna absorb all the genome virus thingy and disappear along with Inori maybe? Or Inori will absorb Shuu's virus and she'll the one whose going to die. Could be that Gai will realize that he's been wrong in the end and will take on Shuu's Void (he's got that power too) and he'll die instead of Shuu.
What about that silly little kid that's been popping in and out? What's the deal with him?

And so Shu gains another upgrade, despite the fact that it was mentioned that using the Void Genome would most likely kill him ... should have known that. The greater the chances of failure, the more likely the attempt will succeed.
I kind of wanted for Ayase to use that thing. She would have been much better at being a hero than Shu ever was. Either way, I have realized that the only reason I'm watching this anime is to see how much more screwed up it will get.

Oh! I just sort of realized something but still haven't clearly think about it yet but the power is called the "void" power. Shu's void power takes in everything as if Shu's a void himself, an empty space void of anything. Interesting...

Shu won't die of the cancer. He'll fight Gai to a draw and at the last minute give an uncharacteristic sermon that will instantly shatter Gai's resolve. Gai, mentally defeated, will then proceed to draw out and use Shu's void with his own void to absorb the cancer and shatter away after some ShuXGai bromance.

Spoiler for Episode 19:
But more importantly, he totally ignored his chance to fondle Ayase when he touched her for the nth time. (okay i don't know where this came from. Everytime he pulls someone's void, i imagine the vessel's voice saying: Oh yes Shu! Please touch me there.") |
