The greatest problem we had with this debate was that we never found out why it was "John Smith". If it was just Kyon coming up with a common as dirt English name on the fly, or if it had other meaning (such as being close to Kyon...though why he'd pick that when he keeps saying he doesn't like his nickname I can't know).
Then there was if the genderbent version needed to follow "John Smith" as a close example with Joan Smith, even though that isn't common, go with Jane Doe, even though that isn't a real name, or go with the actual common name which is Mary Smith. And all the variations. (like Mary Sue Smith) Again the trouble is that we don't know if there is any meaning behind Kyon using "John Smith" to answer Haruhi's question about his name "three years ago" with no prompting from anyone. Later, he would discover the power he held with "John Smith" but he didn't when he said it (Even young Haruhi called him on using such a name). If there is no meaning behind the name, it really doesn't matter what it is, just as long as it would seem like a logical English name for Kyonko to come up with to Haruki's random name question "three years ago" which Haruki will call her on just like Haruhi called Kyon on his choice.

(I knew that would come in handy someday!) So, until we get a definite reason and consensus, what name should we use for the time being? Still "Jane Smith"?

I've always been in support of Jane Doe. If a girl is randomly coming up with a pseudonym to refer to herself by, it's a lot more likely to be "Jane Doe" than "Joan Smith". Even though they're closer to "John", "Joan Smith" and "Jane Smith" just have too much thought put into it, imo. But if Joan Smith has already been used in a doujin, then sure, why not?
...And before you ask "Who the hell are you?", I'm just Aerii, a randomly appearing newb... [points at Join Date] Sort of. I joined and posted here, like, four years ago entirely because I liked your seitenkan project thing. Still do. You've halted the novel rewrites and started working on a doujin visual novel... right? orz. I'm a self-proclaimed artist and I actually know how to use Ren'Py with some proficiency so I might be able to help. I'll admit that I'm not the best at adapting my style though. (I'll also admit that I'm only just now in the process of reading Boredom...) EDIT: BTW, I looooved Aebliss's fanfic, The Setsubun of Suzumiya Haruki. I forgot to mention that. The whole thing was just really, really good. And I love Sherby's screencaps. And my weakness as an artist is lineart but I'm pretty good at coloring. Um. I think that's everything. Glad you like our stuff, Aerii! (And happy to know you like Jane Doe too. )
The VN project is on hiatus right now, but I've gotten Kaisos to continue with at least one chapter of Disappearance (hopefully). And yeah, we could always use more artists here. But, since the VN's at a standstill, at this point, I just do character designs and the caps. Is there anything in particular you'd be interested in drawing right now?

I don't know, what do you guys need? orz. I kinda wanted to draw sprites. I can draw backgrounds a little (and I'm better at interiors than exteriors with that), but I prefer not to--it's the one thing I actually dislike drawing. But since the VN is on hiatus, I can't think of anything I could help with besides maybe doing illustrations for the novel or something...?

I've just read through the story archives, and I have to say I'm really interested in doing some re-writes myself.
I was wondering, are there any guidelines that I should probably adhere to? The FAQ was sort of vague, and kind of outdated, it seemed. |
