So many people give him too little credit for Higanbana, as far as I'm concerned. But I can't say anything for certain, considering how little people seem to want to talk about it. Maybe it's because it has nothing of considerable value to speculate...

Here's what I could gather on "The Spirit Camera."

Spoiler for Summary of what I know:

The main character is a boy named Takeshi Nonomiya, who is a photographer and may be a member of the school's journalism club. He finds this musty old camera and takes a picture of his class with it. When it develops, he sees a picture of the now-dead Marie in it, but doesn't seem to have much memory of her, if he even remembers her at all. So he sets out to learn more about who she is because he's obsessed with "finding the truth," or something like that.

Now prepare for some more incoherent details. Please don't think of this as bad writing on Ryukishi07's part, because I don't know enough Japanese to know how this all ties together. For this reason, I'll only list the details I know.

• Nonomiya meets with Marie's mother, who kind of freaks out over how her daughter hasn't come home.
• He runs into this youkai called the Headmaster who's the highest ranked of all the youkai in the school, and he apparently tries to eat him, but Higanbana shows up and stops the Headmaster.
• Higanbana brings him home and goes through his album and forces him to remember that he was once a stalker who harassed this girl named Youko, who eventually committed suicide (I think the shock of the event, if not the fact that he saw her body get eaten by the Headmaster, made him forget). Then Higanbana summons Youko's ghost, but I think Youko forgives him.
• Higanbana keeps tormenting Nonomiya, but Marie shows up to defend Nonomiya and gets into a fight with Higanbana. Higanbana is driven away, and Marie and Nonomiya have this talk (I assume Nonomiya is satisfied with his lust for the truth about her at this point).
• Nonomiya moves on with his life, and Marie and Higanbana are shown to be friends again (or whatever their relationship is; I'm kind of thinking that they were only pretending to fight for Nonomiya's sake, but really, that's entirely speculative on my part).

So there you have it. If you want to know what REALLY goes on, well, someone had better translate it.

The only other thing I could gather from the other stories is from "Hameln's Castanets".

The main character is Hikaru Nihei, a delinquent who kills bunnies. He meets this youkai named Hameln (NOT one of the seven/eight youkai, mind you), who turns him INTO a bunny (I think). And then he and Higanbana do nasty stuff to him, or something. The end.

I thought the same thing! Ryuukishi has said that Higanbana isn't something to be solved, but I don't doubt that this was done intentionally. Perhaps it's some form of "extra entertainment" for those who have played Umineko (or can think in that style).

Or else it might be a trap for people who have played Umineko. In the same way some people got confused in Umineko because of Higurashi.

Edit: Also, Hikaru is male? I never would have guessed.

The funny thing is that one of my favourite tracks from Higurashi Kai is by zts… what is wished. It sounds so joyful and happy! daily passing by is also a fairly happy song. His other track from Higurashi Kai, soak became the sort of thing he'd do for Umineko. Sure, there's stuff like Worldend_dominator which is a fast-paced track, but a lot of the stuff tends to be quite ominous.

Yeah, a quick glance at musicbox red shows what zts is capable of beyond murder rave songs: dead angle, apathy, voiceless, wingless; all beautiful.

But back on topic, it seems that 4% overall is done, 26% being from the first story.

The person who's doing this is being VERY open about it. Hell, s/he's even planning to show the script for all to see, and for some to help edit, once the first story reaches 100% completion.

I'm just glad the first part's backstory is being told by an actual narrator, and not by some psychotic child molester sitting on a toilet seat.

I remember there was a time when Higurashi didn't have composers. 07th Expansion just used copyright-free doujin songs for the first four chapters. It wasn't until Kai that composers actually wanted to make music for them, and thus dai and zts joined the circle. Maybe that's why they replaced all the music with new compositions when it was released as Matsuri on the PS2.

So after re-reading story 3, I've come to the conclusion that the Tea Gentleman is Battler due to what his "power" does. Also the play was fucking called Rokkenjima, god damn it Ryukishi.

I agree ZTS does do some other great music other than awesome murder rave XD. He also does some REALLY amazing remixes of touhou and KEY from what I have noticed.

I'm glad Dai is still in this one, Dai makes some amazing tracks too.

I would, but there's a few problems.
First issue is the language barrier. I can read some things like Katakana, Hiragana, etc. But I'm far from fluent. I could always try keeping a japanese dictionary with me, but then...

Second problem is my computer refusing to install this thing that'll let my computer run in Japanese Locale so I can't get passed a scene even if I wanted to.

And finally, I don't have the will to go crazy and spend days/weeks/months trying to get Higanbana to work. I'll make this clear: I've pretty much lost faith in Ryukishi. His art hasn't gotten any better (not a huge problem but I still like nice sprites to look at), the story seems very similar to his other works (notably Umineko with Marie's backstory resembling a certain redhead's backstory) and 2 of my favorite characters (from design only) are/were

. Even so, I'm STILL hoping he'll pull through and write something well so it's not like I WON'T check this out outta curiousity. At the very least, I hope he'll end stuff well. Unlike Umineko...

Well, I wouldn't say Nonomiya (the stalker) gets tortured so much as he gets scared straight. Hikaru (the bunny killer), on the other hand, gets what a bunny killer deserves. Apparently that involves getting turned into a bunny and ass-raped. (I'm VERY vague on those details, so don't take the sentence before this one seriously.)

By the way, I would have mistaken Hikaru for a girl if it weren't for the color-coded name tag all the student characters wear (the girls wear red and the boys wear blue).

I was actually wondering whether or not Higanbana really was as much of a jerk as she was let on to be in this story. I mean, there's this scene not long after she and Marie fight that shows them being all buddy-buddy or something. Because I too know very little Japanese apart from hiragana and katakana (plus I have a dictionary), I really had to wonder if it were art of some plan to give Nonomiya a chance to repent and give him a happy ending. (By the way, he makes a brief cameo in the sixth story. Oh, and it's told from Youko's perspective.)

And yeah, looks like Marie is the new Japanese Batman. Kanamori seems to be the only kill under her belt.
