Ethics? What are these ethics you speak of?
I usually try to buy official anime..... you know when I have the money. And as for Hong Kong Bootlegs I only bought one. I don't like it that much since the timing to the video and the audio was off a little. |

I'll download anything, licensed or not. If I really like a series I'll buy the dvd, but I still keep the fansubs for it. I will not buy any bootleg dvds however. I refuse to give money to people bootleging anime, but I will download a licensed series for free. As long as no one's trying to make a profit from it, I'm fine with it.
And Osaka owns all! |

Anonymous... Ok.
About the only thing I don't do is buy Bootlegs. I download liscensed anime, DVD rips, whatever. Because there is 0% chance of myself ever being able to start even a pitiful DVD anime collection, I collect CD-R's instead. I own exactly 0 anime DVD's and that's the way its going to stay, unless by some miracle I become white collar, start making actual money, and am able to tend to other financial things in my life comfortably first. |

I try to make sure that downloading affects my buying habits as little as possible (ideally doesn't affect them at all) except for providing information as to how much I'll like something. So when considering when to buy something, the question I ask myself is "were I unable to access this anime in any other way, knowing what I do about its enjoyability, would I consider it worth the money?" It's perhaps not perfect, I'm sure these things have some effect, but I'm pretty confident in my ability to make such judgements reasonably fairly, so I don't think it's far off.
But generally I'll download and keep anything. I also keep fansubs/DVD-rips even when I buy the DVDs, it's always good to have a backup, and sometimes fansubs can even be better than the DVDs in some ways (or at least aimed at me as a (fairly) hardcore fan, rather than the general populace.) |

I usually rent and record HK dvd's on to vhs if the quality is good. Or if I really like it I'll buy a bootlege of the HK bootlege. If I ever get a dvd burner I'm sure i'll end up renting and copying legal versions of licensed dvd's if I can't find them for download. But I do also buy licensed DVD's if I really like them and know I'll watch them every few years. For example, my next DVD purchase will be Spirited away, even though I can get a high quality dvd bootlege for cheap, I want a licensed copy.

Buy the shows you really like, NEVER buy bootlegs (because that's just a bunch of people making money on someone else's work), this is what i consider an honorable thing to do.
Oh and if a show gets licensed in an impossible place for me to get the DVD (like north korea or something )I'll dl it. But off course this almost never happens ... |

You know the generally accepted fansub download/distribution ethics? I follow those, except that instead of licensing as being the time to stop, the release of the first DVD in the US is the time to stop. The announcement of licenses is too arbitrary AFAIC, so I chose a more practical deadline.
edit: Oh right, I of course buy the DVD's of the good series I watch. It's roughly equivalent of living in Japan, kinda. Watch it on TV, then buy the DVD's if I liked it. |

I downloaded licensed anime recently, knowing licensed when I did so.
Who doesn't? Only those who don't have the right links I'm sure anyone who could download any good licensed anime (F.I. ROD TV and Gungrave, which I'm watching currently), they would. And I'm sure the majority of people here do dl licensed anime and manga (such as Naruto, One Piece and Berserk). Just by seeing the people who dl licensed anime are the double of the people who stop dling them if they're licensed gives you the proof. I usually buy DVDs of an anime that I have watched and loved in fansub form. But only very few of anime I really love. Here in Brazil there are very few good anime, so we have to import. The dolar is currently 3 times more expensive than the currency here, so the import DVDs are very expensive. I have very few anime DVD here, such as both Rurouni Kenshin OVA, Akira, Metropolis and Cowboy Bebop: Knockin' On Heaven's Door (The Movie). But of course, if I lived in the USA, I'd buy much more anime DVD. |

Nice post Vicious. This ethics-poll is lost on me, so I have voted for Osaka always wins. I download whatever I like without giving the "morality concept" a second thought since it is full of holes in both areas of fansubbing licensed and unlicensed anime. I will buy if I like a series very much. That is all to it.

Oh, and I don't buy Hong Kong DVDs, not because it's illegal, but because they suck. They suck compared to legal DVDs and they suck compared to fansubs. They suck period. |
