TBH im super excited about this anime.
the purple haired girl (i think she's like health drink or w/e) is very kawaii! edit: i think her name is "Yell" but im curious....if this is going to be a harem...or what. i was reading somewhere that i think their all trying to "compete" or something......i dunno im pretty sure the Health drink and Melon are "enemies" per se... |

Melon looks scary. The music seems somewhat silly.. I am expecting a supernatural romantic comedy as opposed to what I thought earlier. |

I'm amazed, Sterling, that you were able to finish this novel...
Okay, let's see what the first episode hands us... BGM: ........................................... <--Speechless Art/character design: Okay, both are bad. The character designs already feel odd, but it only gets worse by having the art quality of a shonen anime like Katekyo Hitman Reborn. Lots of... polygons... I guess, is the way to put it. Stiff... There was a scene with a shaking butt, and there was some point on the side like a notecard was stuck inside... And the overall character designs are ugly... Story: A-HA-HA-HA- Besides the time with Melon, it badly introduces some of the cast by giving them a minute to prove their moe point (not including the best friend character). Boku-ko, childhood friend, silly but suspicious grown-ups... And then the whole thing with Melon... First half has her explain the retarded setting. Second half has a dramatic moment that couldn't move me if my life depended on it. Something like that... Well, there was stuff to laugh at (mostly just the gross protagonist, who is like an unlikable version of Keita from Inukami), luckily, but overall to overall, it was horrendous... This is only the first episode and the OP/ED has not been revealed yet, so maybe it will get more interesting in the future... Along with better art... ......Why do I get the feeling it will end up as bad as Akane-iro...

I am so easily pleased, especially by first episodes. A new story, with a new hook, almost no matter how lame, and I'm interested. Even slightly moved by Melon's existential situation.
I generally hate characters like the one Jun-chan is playing, and especially when he plays them, but this time I'm feeling okay toward him for some reason. I hope for something better from the protagonist as time goes on. Enjoyed seeing Toyosaki Aki (Amuro in Umisho) back for a turn as the osananajimi called Najimi. Liked her reactions, and the Amuro-like mouth animation. Anyway, I'll hang around at least until I hear Yuuki Aoi (Murasaki in Kurenai) playing a character called Budoko. The animation is like paper cut-outs sometimes, but the blocky, simple look has its own logic. Some images were funny, such as the recurring image of a body on the closet door. The animation director/character designer, Tanaka Ryo, directed animation for some shows years ago (Mahou no Angel Sweet Mint 1990, Virtua Fighter 1995, Najica Blitz Tactics 2000) but has just done episodes recently (Baccano, Gigantic Formula). Director Himaki Yuji has been around for two decades, but an Anpanman movie in 2006 was the only other show he has directed. Writer Koyasu Hideaki has been lead writer on no other show, but has done script work on shows such as Lime-iro Senkitan, Yoakena, Sakura Taisen NY, and Minamike. In other words, the staff-list is not particularly inspiring. By the way, this preview of the first ep is streamed via the official site, using Bandai Channel. Or you can see it from donogo.com via parasitestage.net.

The main problem is that there is a lack of depth shading on most shots, making things look "flat". Something you would expect from pre-digital rendering animation from the 90's. It may simply be due to this been a test screening and the actual broadcasting may be more polished.

I will fully agree with hypernova and the fact the raw/fansub release might be poor quality doesn't change the fact: the production quality of Akikan is extremely subpar, as much or even worse than Chaos;Head.
Regardless of the possible better color and sharpness of the image with a proper broadcast, the character design is extremely whaky, even when no slapstick is involved. That is quite a handicap for a series that doesn't seem to have a stellar plot (I mean... who wouldn't like a animated series with a design very faithful to Suzuhira's?). Kakeru is... gross, but I will admit that he is the only thing that might keep the audience watching this show (he is totally idiotic, but his theatral moves and speech are so corny that they are fun, a sharp contrast to flat random osanajimi, brutal and cold girl acting like a witch with steel card (Kaiba, is that you?), random classmates and cookie tsundere main heroine). First episode was unimpressive "at best": the plot itself isn't taking itself serious, throwing a lot of random comedy sidetracking what is going on. Plus the fact they introduce the secondary characters in such quick and sub par fashion isn't anything flattering. I would say it is either bad or a guilty pleasure, but honestly, this is not really a show that will shine in a good way...

I haven't watch it yet...but what actually surprised me more was the fact that only Kaoru Choujo praised Akikan!'s first episode despite of it being a bad series from every scope as mentioned by the others.
But i'm sure i had prepared for the worst when i was anticipating for this series few months ago.I don't mind about its poor quality and poor storyline...and i don't even need to know the differences between the anime itself and the original source - the novel itself. And i wish i can be as enjoyable as Kaoru Choujo when watching the first episode later. |
