In F/SN Zouken is not much of a fighting force. He controls the "shadow" and True Assassin to do all the fightings for him. As magi, Kayneth and Tokiomi are more than capable of winning against him. Zouken knows that he needs time to prepare Sakura for the next Grail War.

Well, to fight in the war, doesn't he need to be chosen as a Master by the Grail? But he's not, so he can't do anything about that.

Zouken is terrified by death and his sole reason for participating in the war is to attain immortality through the Holy Grail. He wants to thwart death so badly that he's lived on for centuries by possessing other people's bodies through utterly grotesque means. So obviously he's not gonna put his own life at risk by doing the fighting himself when he can just have Kariya/Shinji/Sakura/True Assassin do it in his stead.

Here are my questions again:

- Why did Diarmuid accept Gráinne's geis?
- Did he fell in love with Gráinne (on first sight)?

The answer to the those questions could be found in both the LN and in the short during the anime Fate/Zero.

He didn't fall in love with Gráinne at first, but respected her desire to throw away everything she had in order to be with him.
He was a knight that respected particular things, and that look of desperation and absolute love Gráinne gave him that night resulted in him accepting the geis; despite how it would also mean betraying his lord. He liked her, but he wasn't as into the love affair as Gráinne was at first.
However, once he accepted the geis there was no turning back; he had to carry out the terms of the geis to its fullest, otherwise the curse of the geis would kill him.
Which is why he is so obsessed with being Kayneth's loyal vassal in Fate/Zero, as a means of atonement.

In other news, Fate/Apocrypha is coming out as a LN around December 15th I hear.

If Kayneth and Tokiomi would even stop Zouken.

They can be extremely stupid and poor in survival. Tokiomi, IIRC, is an average magus. So I don't think is impossible for him to get stomped. Kayneth is really good, though, the strongest in the war ironically (funny how the Lancers get the best Magus of the war: Bazett, Kayneth, but they get trolled somehow. Their Luck, it HAS to be). I'd think the major issue is to get a strong Servant compatible with Zouken. Lancelot wouldn't be. Neither would Medusa. Assassin wouldn't assure a victory

And that pesky fear of death.

In HF he DOES fight, when he manages to get sakura to lower her guard and takes control of her(as the shadow). He summons hassan from fake!assassin and becomes a master. Now the reason why he doesn't fight on his own is because Zolgen is OLD, and on the verge of death, he's got very little prana of his own to spare for fighting, he's actually probably only slightly better than Kariya. Both Tokiomi and Kayneth(and Kiritsugu and Kotomine and probably Maiya, too) would utterly curbstomp him, and in fact, so would Rin in the 5th war. The only strong ability he has is that he's basically unkillable by proxy, as you need to destroy his soul anchor, which is lodged inside sakura's heart, to kill him. Otherwise, he can just eat people and make a new body with his familiars

in HF, Kotomine literally mops the floor with him without the slightest difficulty

Tokiomi uses fire, so he has natural advantage over Zouken's bugs (think Charizard vs Beedrill). Zouken has nothing to penetrate Kayneth's mercury shield as far as I know.

My impression of Zouken is that he does not excel in combat, but he is incredibly difficult to kill because he can regenerate his body with bugs. Being hard to kill is not quite enough to compete in the Grail War. Without Sakura he has no hope of winning the Grail at all.

Yes, precisely. He's not going to fight unless he's sure of victory, and without sakura, he's a VERY OLD magus with little to no advantages over the other masters, and outright at a disadvantage against Einzbern and Tohsaka...

That's why he doesn't take part in it unless he can draw Sakura into it. And that's also why he doesn't take part in the 4th war

From what I remember Saber had used Excalibur 3 times in the final battle against Gilgamesh. I don't see how it's possible for her to use it 3 times, can someone clear this up for me.

It puts him in danger, and he's not powerful enough to guarantee a win. Further, he knows he can survive until the next war, whereas if he fights he might not. Plus, it's always better to have two entrants than one, so if he does want to get involved, he does so in addition to the other Matou master, not instead of them.

Didn't Saber get a double dose before heading into battle?

Zouken is the guy who can't die but can't fight back. All of his strength is devoted to living.

The only issue I have with Zouken "supposed powerlevel" is that he had no trouble to dispose of Kojiro. Even if the latter is a "fake servant", he is still, by definition, an heroic spirit so being turned into "food" for real assassin summoning is sort of alien to me.

He didn't kill him, as such, he simply used his body as a catalyst to summon the real Assassin.

Hi sorry if this has been asked before I was just wondering why saber considered the strongest servant does she have something special that the other servant does not have or is she on the same level as Gil my only experience with fate series was the one produced by Deen studio and the new anime airing now and it seems to me that saber cannot easily dispose her opponent based on what every one says about her you would think that she is god level BTW I have no experience with the novels thanks.

Well Saber has the most balanced stats. When it comes to the strongest servant it's Gil(stated by the original creator). Saber does have the strongest defense Avalon though.

I have just finished reading the fight between caster and saber in the light novel it seems to me that Gil biggest weakness is that he always underestimates his opponent and does not take the fights seriously that is why berserker took a surprise shot on Gill.

Well exactly. His arrogance is his weakness. In FHA we found out what would happen if Gil actually is serious.

To me the regarding the army of Riders, how strong exactly are they. They look pretty slow to me. It was stated that they were all servants, but to me they look like the same strength as a regular human. Which is pretty much nothing to a servant.

they are all servants. Meaning they are all as strong as servants.

IMO, they're probably not on the level of saber, but most of them would probably be around average servant level, meaning, around diarmuid's level i guess...

When other characters say that they're referring to the Saber class itself, not Arturia herself in specific.
