In terms of Ekaril being alive or not, I fall on the good old saying. "Captain goes down with the ship" True enough Ekaril wasn't human and a commander instead of a capatain, but more or less still works out fine. I'm pretty sure she knew it was a one way trip and wasn't planning a big escape. Unless divine intervention came and saved her we'll just have to carry the loss.

Was a series that I guess couldn't get a happy ending. No matter how you look at it humanity got owned and its not exactly up hill from there. It's too bad Ekaril had to die here. Carrying guilt for so long then finally being with Mari before having to leave to her death. No clue what Mari would be doing from that point on.

A very emotional conclusion. Just a sad way for things to turn out.

Yeah, there's a manga coming up along with the DVDs (a chapter per DVD). It's called Blue Drop ~Maiorita Tenshi~ and is set in 2008 (8 years after the anime); and yeah, I'm really hoping it'll include some info about Mari and Hagino, though it's unlikely.

You misunderstood this. When we said "time jump", we just meant the gap between the beginning of the war and the final scene set in the future (no real "jump" here). I said 29 years as an approximation, but as you said, the anime reveals is set 30 years in the future.

I completely freaked out at "sayonara." In fact, I'm still trying to dig my heart out of my stomach.
Mari screaming lines from the play and running along the dock was just heartbreaking. They really milked that for all the emotional impact they could, and it was done well. That scene is in the OP, by the way.
Anyone else notice that Ekaril refers to herself as 'Senkouji Hagino' after reciting her lines from the play? Turned Horime, she did

What Ekaril did to Tsubael was absolutely ruthless

A really great ending to a really great show. They covered the invasion, which is something I was hoping they'd do, and they certainly didn't pull any punches anywhere. Though Hagino's fate is pretty apparent from episode 6 onward, they managed to keep me guessing right up until she saluted Tsubael. The direction and music during this whole thing was beautiful. This series was a really great ride, and I know I'll be watching it again.

The only things I'd complain about are (1) Azanael coming "back from the ." She could definitely not have survived that pool of from a chest wound that traversed the body. And (2) I don't think they really explained the strangling scene or Hagino being knocked unconscious. Maybe the subs will help, especially Shivariel's speech.

1: There wasn't that much. The thing about liquid on a flat surface is that it often looks like there's a lot more there than there actually is. Also, we can't see exactly where the wound was, unless I missed it.

2: Yeah... they didn't really explain much there. Shivaril refers to Mari as a "touch-telepath," but that's about it. Kinda bummed about that, but where would they have squeezed it in between the battles, tearful goodbyes, and explosions? I think I'd rather be whacked with a bigger emotional stick than get an intrusive explanation if it came down to it, but I still would have liked to see this explained.

Ooh... I like that. Very probable, since even with their penchant for self-sacrifice, that'd be a colossal waste of personnel.

It's possible that, since Shivaril obviously went beyond her orders with Genocide Mode, her superiors viewed Tsubael, Ekaril, and Azanael as heroes who didn't hide behind the old "I was only following orders" excuse. Shivaril had forgotten why they were there, which was to conquer humanity rather than massacre them.

They got lazy. Personally, the anime version of the invasion is terrible.

I didn't like how they made the Emiru Force Arume into 3d.. Why did they suddenly make characters 3d when they have been making them 2d throughout the entire series. They could have put that effort into making the ships look right.

I don't think they got lazy... they changed the design of them, that's all. And otherwise the anime version of the invasion looks exactly the same as the one in the manga, so I don't see why you're saying it was "terrible."

Though it did look odd making the Emiru Force Arume 3D. I guess I can understand, since animating that many individually would take an enormous amount of time (they were all spinning), but they did return to regular animation for the close-ups.

Well the reason I am saying lazy is because:

1. All of the invasion ships are mostly facing 1 direction in both scenes (invasion and end).
2. They are drawn. I know it's faster, but modeling wouldn't take very long either, it's a pretty basic shape.
3. They look like flying saucers.. which makes it seem way too typical. This is the part I don't like the most. (In the manga, they actually look like warships.. here they look like some sort of blimp/flying saucer floating over the city.)

Gotta agree with you changeup. I almost had a heart attack when hagino said sayonara. its definitely quite a heartbreaking scene made me scream! but somwhere in me i still believe that hagino did survive. hagino and mari could have been together in that 30 years that they did not show us cos they jumped to 30 years later...also theres a telepathic connection between hagino and mari so im still hoping they reconciled somewhere.

oh and mari cant be pregnant. i dont think that would be possible

As Azanael somehow managed to live, there should be evidence of Master Commander's crimes. If their superiors are reasonable, they should appreciate their actions. Master Commander not only directly caused the death of countless Arume and Forime, but also launched an unauthorized invasion, and even whipped out the "genocide" weapon. Their original purpose was investigation, and she just about ruined any chance of friendly relations. Even if an "invasion" was being planned, a much less destructive and brutal transition of society would have been possible. Now, everything is a huge mess--both the relations and the planet.

The question I have is, why were the other commanders so quick to help with the coverup? She openly admitted to crimes against their own people, right in front of them all! What the hell?

Finally, what a miserable end for Hagino. Any expectations of her survival would require some seriously wishful thinking. From the moment Hagino said goodbye, her intentions were perfectly clear. Shifting the ship at the last moment would have removed the primary source of destruction. Even the very thought of escape is unthinkable, as it would diminish her chances of protecting Mari--and she is committed 100% to protecting Mari.

Another miserable holiday. My heart is also broken. They seem to love giving the gift of pain at such times.

I just checked out the prices for the DVD volumes (volume one came out today and two is due sometime in January) and almost had a coronary. I know this series is worth it but oh the pain to my credit card.

my heart is broken! why sucha great but sad ending!!! atleast in simoun they both died together! but oh well we dont really really know for sure if hagino died and whatever happened to mari after... so im still hoping somewhere they're happy together...


theyre both telepathic so they can communicate somehow..

i hope they did... since mari did not seem to be at a shock when she saw the crash (did she see the crash anyways? maybe its just me..lols)

Well after finishing off this wonderful little series, I really wasn't at all shocked by the ending. Regardless I found it a great joy to watch. The series just seemed so different to me especially for something that you could call a shoujoai/yuri series.

Well, despite expecting a sad ending, it still hurts to watch it... At least Hagino died for a cause she truly believed in and for LOVE! The 'sayonara' and dock scenes were the most heart wrenching, especially knowing what Hagino did in the end.

Felt for Tsubael as well, having admired (loved?) her Commander, going through so much with and for her and in the end, having to watch her go on her suicide mission.

Question is what happened to Mari? Hopefully the DVD will include some specials to address that. Speaking of which, how many volumes are there to the DVD set?

The way it's set up we have to presume that Ekaril is dead. It mirrors the play/real events where Jeanne d'Arc dies. Although it is pretty stupid considering she could have told the Blue to do the jump and ram it, then ejected herself.

As expected, the woman at the end is Micchi going to do the negotiations, escorted by Tsubael and Azanael still arguing 30 years later

The only major plotholes to me are why exactly did Hagino choke Mari at the start of the series, and what is up with her psychic/whatever link to the Arume. Judging by how many spinoff mangas they're having, I'm hoping it will be explained in some fashion.

I think what you mentioned was one of the few things that I wished they explained a little more. It would have been nice to know why Hagino had choked Mari. Sure one can speculate about the cause and effects of the Emil Force but I don't even know if that makes sense anymore considering what we learned about Hagino/Ekaril.

Or maybe there was one, but it was wrapped up in some technobabble that I can't understand. I do hope this is the case.

Also, when are we going to be able to download purchase this wonderful soundtrack? Amazon Japan doesn't even have a preview for it
