Socially challenged
I'm looking for an anime with protagonist that's mentally ill. The only important genre I need is comedy , romance is good too. Also, I mean mentally ill as in Satou from Welcome to the NHK, or Nozomu from Sayonara Zetsubo Sensei. Not psychologically crazy like Light from death note or Lelouch from code geass.

Well, you've already seen the two best shows! haha! Erm, anyway, you've made a really difficult request because not only are those rare, but the two shows you mentioned are so good it's hard to imagine anything comparable. Unless you count Genshiken, which is a show entirely about otaku and not to be missed.

Despite the show being primarily about gothic lolita dolls bashing each other and stuff, the protagonist of Rozen Maiden, Jun, is a classic hikkikomori.
That's supposed to be a psychological problem, I think. P.S. Despair-sensei is so not ill! He's just in despair with our society! |

lol I agree, Welcome to the N.H.K is the best!
I did see Genshiken already, but didn't mention it cause I didn't think it fit. I've heard quite a few people comparing Genshiken with N.H.K, but I dunno why. They are totally different! Other than the fact the Welcome to the N.H.K has an otaku. Still holding onto faith, anyone got a befitting suggestion?? |

Its hard to find people who are crazy like Satou because he starts hallucinating.
Spoiler for Satou hallucinating in the book:
I guess Noda from Nodame Cantabile is kind of like Satou, maybe not has crazy but you can easily see that she must not get along with most peoples. There is also Randel from Pumpkin Scissors that has difficulty socially. Maybe Planetes would fall in that category, I mean all of the people in their section look like a society failure. My last suggestion would be the movie Mind Game. The guy in it is not socially challenged, but he does look mentally ill (maybe its all of the movie that just make no sense).
