When Yuuya was coming back on top of the mountain ridge with the sunset in the background, I was like, "oh please, no laser class beta ripping him apart." He was so high up there that he would make an easy target. I knew they would not do that to the MC, but still...
So that was the Scarlet Twins in the end? I thought it was some new experimental unmanned unit. Speaking of which, I do miss seeing the Scarlet Twins.

her voice is so calm gentle and soothing, I wish she will get more role in upcoming series. One of few exception was when she voiced Beatrice (Umineko) |

*looked forward to watching the stupid bullies die*
*entire battalion gets erased off-screen* ( ゚д゚)..................... *preview* *Not a new episode content-wise* ( ゚д゚).............. Sure they've reached the half-way point and it makes a bit of sense to look back at what has happened, but to be honest, considering the low production value of this anime, I'm more prone to thinking they just couldn't finish the next episode on time. This episode, they didn't have enough content to reach the end of the episode, so the last two seconds or so was a mysterious and pointless screenshot of the galaxy. PS: Yui-hime, please remember Yamamoto(=Target Practice) sometimes.

So, thoughts on the episode.
I'd actually forgotten that this series believes in anyone dying - I kinda had a hope that Latrova would survive. I'd forgotten that it's possible to be too cool to live. Colonel Badass, Ace Pilot, Mother to her troops, knows when to shift from being a hardass to a Team Mom... *salutes* That said, once Sandek suggested the eastern front needed heroes, I knew in my heart there was no way Latrova and Zhar were getting outta there alive. I hoped, but.... daaaaamn. Fuckin' hurts. Hero of the Soviet Union is a decoration given out. Supposedly it's the highest honor the Soviet Union can give, equivalent to the Medal of Honor. In practice... it depends on the circumstances that led to the person being awarded the medal. Brezhenv and Zhukov were both awarded four times, but nobody can deny that Zhukov earned his medals, unlike Brezhnev... So it's some consolation, but not much. While there's the usual animation derp, I have to say I'm impressed with the animators - most people would animate dumb iron bombs, but the animators are using cluster self-forging fragment submunitions. Ace Combat players, those bombers were dropping SFFS cluster bombs on Zhar. And I can see those being extremely useful if you had air superiority, as these are powerful area effect weapons (as an example, the American Mk 20 Rockeye cluster bomb uses the same principle, and is one of the many aircraft delivered antitank weapons in use: at the time of the Cold War and Gulf War, Maverick missiles and Rockeyes were used for antitank missions, before being supplanted by laser-guided bombs and JDAMs). Also, given how Shwarzesmarken notes that all TSF cockpit recorders record all data, and how Commissars can both listed to the records and live mike, I figure Latrova was trying to not say anything explicitly over the comms, but to no avail - it's quite clear she knew too much. Sandek is... a pragmatic villain. I can actually sympathise/understand his position: I'm in a similar position of being an expert and the man with a plan, who the bosses don't listen to or value, and treat like shit, but get called in to bail people's asses outta the fire. Still, that was a dick move. Last words: Goddamnit Soviets. Goddamn you. Burn in hell Rogofski. Goddamn motherfucking tosvarish chekist. Yob tovyu mat. (And that exhausts the last bit of my Russian.)

Another good episode of TE. It's kinda sad about Mother Russia. Such a waste. She would have been a great mentor for Yuuya and a nice replacement son too. On a shallow note, best body so far! Have you seen dat Black Bikini?
As for the rest of the crew, I felt nothing for them other than Tasha. Tasha was cool with me. It's crazy how the same battalion that was picking on Cryska and Inia met their fate by their hands or should I say chainsaws. It was a life lesson that they learned a little too late. If you're a bully, the last thing you want do is mess with anyone that's notoriously called, "The Scarlet Twins".

I liked Tasha and Latrova. That twin tailed girl was slowly creeping in to a tolerable state, but alas it was not meant to be.
Oh I forgot to say, I really liked that moment were 94 Second was heading to base with the Sun setting in the background. I know it's common, but I can't help but enjoy an epic scene like that. I'll miss that ED theme too.

Personally I would have preferred green. Quote:
I suspect it might be the scarlet twins in that mysterious unit...yeah I also miss those two... Overall I thought the episode was okay. Wrapped things up, and I like that Yuuya has "matured" as a pilot throughout these 12 episodes, and reflected on that himself before the episode ended. Good way to end the chapter for this part of the story for now so we can start anew after the recap next week. I am looking forward to seeing certain characters getting introduced. |

Yeah it was them, that's why the commander was shocked right before her death since she knew they were all screwed than. Poor Tasha, the only other Zhar member that didn't deserve to die like that.

One comment again: Crunchy was being really derp with the tranlations for this arc. They should be using Army ranks, not Navy. So Latrova is a Lt. Colonel and Tasha is a Captain...
Anyhow... When I began this series, I decided to myself that I would only be in it for the bodysuits and the mecha, and I wouldn't get invested in the characters as a self defense mechanism. Then the player punch from Latrova's death. Jesus. I managed to get emotionally invested without realising it. Bravo, production team. Well played.

Latrova was probably the only character in Zhar Battalion that I actually cared about, as cold as that may sound. The rest of them just seemed like brats to me.

I'm wondering how far Yuuya and Yui will go with each other...hmmm....or will we be stuck in the dense hero + tsundere heroine act cycle for the rest of this anime? |
