LOL, if the Reddit spoilers are anything to go by, the movie should've been called "Gundam SEED Fukuda no Shitpost" rather than "Gundam SEED Freedom".

Twitter reactions seem to be quite positive, but I understand Japan has a more forgiving audience.

Apparently, in the movie, Kira, Athrun and Shinn break from the foes' mind control because:
- of Kira's love for Lacus and vice versa
- Athrun's lustful thoughts for Cagalli (yep, she's the end girl, not Meyrin), actually induced by enemy telepathic attacks.
- Shinn's mind goes blank when he fights ()...and when the antagonists take a second look, they are met with a monstrous version of Stella, which is allegedly the embodiment of his chimera/trauma towards his past flame.

There is an attempted (unsuccessful) sexual assault, thwarted by the power of words(tm).

New mechs don't actually make it till the end and, surprisingly, SF and IJ make a return but with upgrades (SF with a new wing pack, a Gundam ZZ-like head cannon, a long katana and an anti-ship sword; IJ with a MA mode that turns into a frickin' X-wing). Oh, and Athrun's final mech is concealed inside...a Z'Gok.
SF's wing upgrade can deploy a massive spherical beam shield and has some sort of (for now unclear) features that acts like a Cyclops system that can destroy hundreds/thousands of incoming missiles.

Duel and Buster return with a nuclear reactor upgrade and man Eternal's METEORs.

Ultra-coordinator enemies are called accords and have the ability to read minds, share visions and seek out their targets' darkness, which is used for mind control. It backfires horribly on them when they try it on Shinn, though.

Another floating fortress with GENESIS as the villains' base... Ruins of Messiah are used as enemy base while there is a coup inside PLANT.

Some cameos: Miriallia, Sai, non-speaking Waltfeld and Shiho. Kuzzey is apparently there in a "blink-and-you'll-miss-it" fashion.

Oh...and Mu once again goes for a shield block with an Akatsuki...against a GENESIS beam...and survives (reflects it back in the form of multiple beams). The man just doesn't learn, does he?

Main antagonist is a 60yo woman who lives in a little girl's body through the power of biotechnology.

Athrun punches Kira to break him out of his depression; the two end up having a tussle and accidentally punching Shinn when he tries to break both up.

Aside from the antagonists who predictably kick the bucket, there are only two casualties on Compass' side: Mars and Herbert. The rest lives.

The Archangel crash-lands in flames during the mid-movie fight, is replaced by something else later...where the bridge is hoisted into a glass bubble atop the superstructures, Star Trek-style. Stupid design, if you ask me.

Agnes betrays Compass due to her infatuation with Kira (she's the one who destroys the Rising Freedom inside a Gyan), but she survives the final battle.

Lacus was actually bioengineered (as a perfect/extra-altered coordinator - namely, an "Accord") by the movie's main antagonist, to one day serve as a high-ranking plant in one of the major powers' governments, but the plan went awry. It kind of explains Lacus' SEED mode, but it doesn't explain how she was inserted into Siegel Clyne's family, whether the latter's wife was complicit in this or if the gene editing was done without both parents' knowledge.

Lacus dons a new spacesuit with...wing-like thrusters(?) that make her look like an angel or mahou shoujo...

And the ending...well...Cross Ange's "three days, three nights" , anyone?

From what I heard it also feels like an apology to Shinn's corruption. Also the really old commentary about Stella being in the movie now makes sense.

Kira and Athrun fighting each other but in a sense of buddies also sounds like a breath of fresh air. Still, I'm sad over rumors involving the Rising Freedom being destroyed. I like that Gundam cos it actually looked different from the Freedom vanilla unlike Strike Freedom. I had the same problem with the Wing Gundam upgrade.

Still, it's a shame these villains feel a bit of onenote when compared with Durandal and Rau. Maybe the idea of Kira facing his clones wasn't that bad.

Situation with Meyrin still unknown, though, but both Athrun and Cagalli are acknowledging their feelings for one another.

Kira's upgraded MS is the ZGMF/A-262PD-P Mighty Strike Freedom (ಠ_ಠ). Its wing pack (essentially a Gundam Raiser with DRAGOONs, golden winglets, Voiture Lumière and some sort of Cyclops-like force field) is called "MDE262S Proud Defender" and is piloted by Lacus when Kira gets yet another thrashing, outclassed by the final boss.
Athrun's upgrade is the ZGMF-X191M2 Infinite Justice Gundam Type II. Its base form (MS only) is hidden inside a Z'Gok outer shell, which it purges during battle before joining up with a more conventional flight backpack.
Shinn's mech is the Destiny Gundam Spec II.
Lunamaria's is the Impulse Gundam Spec II.
Dearka and Yzak's mechs are the ZGMF-103HD Lightning Buster Gundam and the ZGMF-1027M Duel Blitz Gundam (which has the Blitz arm claw attachment), respectively.
Compass' new ship after Archangel gets sunk is Millennium (equipped with wired gunbarrels)...which is hijacked by the Archangel crew during the ZAFT/PLANT coup. The Millennium crew chooses to side with the Archangel crew, though and Murrue gains herself a new XO.

The final enemy boss is the Black Knight Squad NOG-M2D1/E Cal-re.A, a two-seater with DRAGOONs. It has a support MA called the Ziggurat.

Will need see whole movie and not bootleg clips, but this feels very Code Geass Movie. Not much plot, all fan service.

Interesting they redesignated Strike Freedom and Infinite Justice. Would make sense if they were designated under the Compass designation, but they kept the ZGMF designation. Heck up until SF gains the Proud Defender, it is still largely the X20A SF still as it gets curb stomped.

I get the out that they showed Destiny was drawing too much juice that the reactor couldn't keep up, but that was never shown as a weakness for the SF. Let alone as it was getting damaged, the power draw couldn't be that high. Unless the reactor output was decreased as SF was getting damaged. It got to the point where the phase shift deactivated..... Of course the new backpack somehow is able to restore full power to SF...... And it being a mini-genesis and throw out a giant force field couldn't be even bigger power strain though......

But at least it wasn't flawless victory once Kira got back into SF.....

The action itself looked great. But this feels just like Code Geass Resurrection. Where the Code Geass movie was all about showing the fans LeLouchxCC, this was all about showing KiraxLacus.

The plot itself feels extremely weak just reading the spoilers and the few clips

We'll have to wait for camvids and tentative translations to get a better idea of what went down. So far we only have been spoiled the highlights of the movie on places like r/Gundam, rather than the interstitial moments. Some things could've been missed and/or under-reported. Who knows.

during the final battle, there is this one Accord fighting Athrun and his Infinite Justice, and tries to make him slip up by feeding him telepathic images of a naked Cagalli. Then he reads Athrun's mind to get a better bead on his weakness...only to discover that Cagalli is actually remote-piloting the IJ from her own mech with Athrun playing the bait, which means the mindspam had no chance of working in the first place.

No sign of a notable scene between the two, only a confirmation that the two are a romantic pairing. Oh, and there are some comments here and there alleging that

Meyrin and Athrun were never a couple - a misunderstanding created by that final scene with the two of them walking away together.

Take that with a grain of salt, though.

Watched it twice already. Went to the midnight special event one where Fukuda said some interesting things. Though the movie changed Lacus’s character.

She’s not a normal coordinator but an Accord.
Accord are the super coordinators that was chosen to guide the humanity under the rule of destiny plan. And they possess abilities such as mind reading, mind manipulation and linking their minds to communicate like Innovades from Gundam 00.

Lacus and Orphee are supposed to be at the top of the Accord and were “destined” to be with each other. So basically they were supposed to be the “Adam” and “Eve” of destiny plan world. Hence the reason for “Lacus” being the main focus of the film.

This story is about Lacus and Kira. But in the latter half of the movie it felt as though Lacus was the main character of this film and stole the spotlight from Kira.

Also don’t expect to see Kira from Gundam SEED Destiny but Kira from the original Gundam SEED.
