So I have been hearing that Season 2 is like 90% filler, do I need to watch them before going for 3rd season, or a summary reading is enough?

90 percent is definitely an exaggeration. There's a substantial amount of source material adapted in the second season, you'll screw up the experience quite a bit if you skip from the first season to third. (Not to mention that I like the second season a lot, filler parts included. Everyone else seems to hate it, but meh.)

If you really can't stand slice of life-esque Shana material, I'd encourage you to start at Episode 12 and watch from there.

Episode 12 is the one where major plot events really start happening, IIRC

It would probably be risky to skip the entire season.

Wasn't episode 8/9 about Margery's past? That was a pretty good glimpse into her character and the lengths she would go to.

The harem antics, if they really sound so terrible to you, pretty much end after episode 7. 8-9 is backstory for Margery Daw, 10+ is all important non-filler plot stuff.

Margery Daw's backstory is very important in the Third Season.
Oh, the slice of life parts are actually part of Volume 8.

Agreed.

I picked Episode 12 since that's when Pheles shows up, and the second season goes into high gear from that point on.

But yeah, the harem antics do largely end with Episode 7. Dr. Casey is right about that.

My personal feeling is to just watch the whole second season. Viewers now already have the advantage of knowing that the story does "pick up" later on, and in the context of the show on the whole the relaxed pace of that early segment is almost a nice break (unless I suppose you really really hate that sort of material). I think its supposed "suckiness" was a bit over-stated at the time, particularly by novel readers who were wanting to see specific later content get more focus. But I think when you consider the franchise on the whole (at what will end up being nearly 80 episodes), it's a small segment. When you're marathoning the show, I think it will pass right by.

I'd say that if you really can't stand the filler, start not before episode 8, because that's when the events that actually influence the main story starts (with Margery's past and Kantarou Sakai come back to home). But the only episode that were a really painfull experience is the number 7.

7 made me laugh to be honest even though it was a poor attempt by Ike.

I guess so, but even as a contributor to the Shakugan no Shana Wiki (and thus a sort of a walking spoiler), I really think that J.C. Staff did a good job at modifying the plot. The filler arc in the Second Season patches up the part of the novels where neither Misaki City nor Yuuji and Shana are the focus, so it's not good to suddenly shift main characters and settings just to be in tune with the story.

As for the third season, my primary concern is how would the introduction of new characters be handled. I hope they don't just appear with no names mentioned, and their names just show up at the credits, like in Index Season 2.

Some will get skipped and some will get the name like in the middle of the battle and nothing else. With only 24 episodes it's kinda difficult to believe they will cover ALL the characters with a decent background.

Maybe it's just me, but I found the second season to be much easier to follow than the first. The first time around, I struggled to keep up with the details, and I frequently tuned out while watching (liked the anime original arc at the end though.....it was a great climax/end point for the season).

OTOH, S2 was a step down in other ways - uneven art + animation, questionable pacing, awkward love triangle, Konoe. I also disliked the final arc. Nevertheless, the writers were successful at producing a cohesive and focused story for the season.

At the end of the day, I still find myself looking forward to Shana despite any misgivings......

As everyone is comenting/ragging about, Season 1 was way better than Season 2(director, maybe?), but it is still necesary to understand the 3rd part.

Nah, same director. And he's a pretty good one, he did Slayers. I mainly blame Yasuko Kobayashi and her shitty writing skills.
