After reading the manga again , i kind of agree with some people here that the Anime is just losing too many of the manga jokes by replacing em with tons of references.

I still get a good laugh even after reading the manga 3-4 times but it just doesn't happen re-watching the anime (only second time)...

On reference, some of em i don't recognise (rewatching it for order of appearance)

-Isumi kick on Hayate from the back could be reference to Kamen rider Faiz Crimson Smash (the device on her leg is similar to Faiz pointer)

-Obvious Rie-chan parody from Nagi (shakugan/Al/Bell)

-the chick on Hayate's apron refer to tokimeki piyo piyo
-Conan on the nameboard

-Marchen(Ginta,Dorothy, not sure whether the old men refer to gaira)

-Hayate being Shinji from evangelion when saying not to run away as mention by Chaos earlier, even the number of sentence is the same after i check

hey, one thing ive noticed. in the opening we see a gift (looks like a valintine/white day chocolate) for maria

was there a chapter on this in the manga?

I didn't know cashmere coats were so expensive

^ It almost looks like the one Hayate is wearing but its black.

Theres a picture of a character from Maison Ikkoku wearing the same apron.

- At the commercial, Sakuya says "Pachi Pachi Punch". This site says its from Yoshimoto-Shinkigeki.

- The painter is painting a sign with Conan on it. I bet the detective conan people are paying Synergy SP to put all those conan references in

- The vending machine has "Synergy" on it. I guess its a reference to the production company.

- Running on trees. That can be a naruto reference maybe lol

- Ex-fansubber's Hitorigoto's blog mentions that the words around Isumi near the end say "Oro". Kenshin reference?

- I still don't get the 1st bleeped out references.
- 2nd bleeped out words is "Ultraman" and "Bestar"

They should have kept the Sakabatou reference from the manga

The first bleep censorship would be Nai Nai (99) and Downtown. Both of em are popular comedian duo in Japan.

Yeah it came to me because there actually a few other reference to Kamen series later on(somewhere vol 9 or 10)....Sadly no one that i talk to, knew what is the 3rd one(WWF maybe

Pretty sure it is Shinji reference.From the atmosphere and if you count the number of sentence that he said ,they matched (maybe it was coincidence *shrug* )

What a odd episode this was. I didn't get any of the gags or jokes in this one at all.

Whoa. It's weird to hear Kana Ueda voicing for Sakuya. She needs to ease up on the coffee, heh. I'm still stuck with her role in voicing for Hayate Yagami in Nanoha.

One last thing, the scene around 8:40 shows the character's Kugimiya, Rie has voiced for, but what character was the fariy looking outfit?

What're the reference during the "jab" sequence? Like when Sakuya starts beating on Hayate?

And i'm seeing alot of people saying ep5 refers to Shanna, can someone point it out? I didn't really liked that series so i didn't really pay attention to a lot of it

It's one of the three scenes, a play on characters previously voiced by Nagi's seiyuu.

First one on left, I never see before. I assume its Bell from MAR, after reading this thread.
Middle one is Shana from Shakugan no Shana and last, Alphonse Elric from Fullmetal Alchemist

Fourth wall? What's that?

Another hilarious episode. I can see why people would get tired of the references, particular manga fans, but it's otaku humour, so they may as well run with it. I appreciate it, and I wouldn't say it's encroaching on the rest of the story or humour at this stage. I'm worried that the cast is just getting bigger and bigger with every ep, though. There's only so many gag characters a series can have before they get stale.

On the Eva parody... it's too much of a coincidence for it not to be a reference, so I'd say more likely than not it probably is.

Well, it's just as I wrote before, they're forcing the cast out very early, and the volumes covered are the weakest of the show.

Next episode we'll get Wataru and Saki, but after that, nearly all characters are covered, and we can return to seeing the MAIN characters picking up again, where things concentrate on developing the relationships between each other. Which happens to be much more interesting in the first place.

Ah, the Matrix.

How about this one? Sakuya was facing the camera and going "yar!" Is that part of a Boke-Tsukkomi comedy act? The only thing I can remember from the comedy act is the straight man will sometimes use a paper fan to correct the silly mistakes made by the partner.

Oh, and one more thing. I note that Sakuya was commenting to Nagi that the day is chilly because Hayate's gags are too cold (i.e. not funny enough). I'm guessing it's something that can't really be translated well.

Right now I am staying at the Sanzenin household. The lady of the house is very cute and kind, but she at times displays that stubborn temper of hers. In addition, she's got this quite cool and awesome butler, Hayate, who seems he can do everything and not forgetting that he also possess a streak for immortality, though it never escapes on my mind that his face looks poor and needy. The past week was somewhat weird and nutty even for the Sanzenins' standards. Lady Nagi refused to leave the comfy of her bed, because according to her maid, Maria, she has been fed up with all those kidnapping attempts to get her money as ransom. She and her family are quite the super rich, at least to my understanding to that side of Japan. Hayate tried by all means to cheer lady Nagi's spirit, but she simply scram to her room. Things turned really twirly when Nagi received a phone call from someone, who judging by the tone of sarcasm and frustration on Nagi's voice, tried to buzz that person on the phone. Moments later a loud-mouthed and stubborn girl, as stubborn as Nagi can gets, broke literally through the front window and made such a flashy entrance wih a ruckus, that I thought a tornado had passed and messed the mansion. The girl introduced herself by the name of Aizawa Sakuya, and Mom she gave me quite the creeps with her comedian routine. I did not understood much of the conversation because my Japanese plainly sucks, but it gave me the impression that she ought came to see Nagi in order to test how cool of a comedian Hayate is. As much as Nagi insisted that Hayate was actually a butler, her words fell on the deaf ears of that scandalous Sakuya. Hayate, being the naive but kind boy he is, misinterpreted Sakuya and thought that as a butler it may well be good to give a try as a comedian. Hayate tried his very best on imitating some Japanese comedian celebrities and even rehearsing his one-shot gags, but every time that he failed Sakuya gave him some physical judgment. When she had gone enough Nagi snapped cosplayed into some strange characters to beat common sense onto Sakuya. Unfortunately, Sakuya would never accept on any role that is not a comedian, but she was quite pleased with his devotion towards Nagi that she accepted to entrust Hayate with the little lady. Things went abysmal when Maria announced that there were no more spare supplies for tea, so Hayate volunteer to go and shop for them at the store. Before going out, Maria advised Hayate to leave wearing a cashmere coat to prove his status as the butler of the Sanzenin family. But I do not see the point of handing a terribly, expensive coat and running the risk that it may get ruined outdoors. Maria, in fact, remarked my point to Hayate that he should be careful not to ruin the coat since the price of 10 cashmere coats like the one Hayate was wearing was equivalent to his total debt incurred to Nagi. I tried to persuade Hayate of coming along with him in order to check on him for the coat, but with his decisive stance turned down my assistance reasoning that the coat was a precious item entrusted to him with great confidence, and as a butler he must respond the courtesy with the same token of appreciation and responsibility. I do admire Hayate for his gentleness and good-will intentions, but seriously Mom sometimes he exceeds his kindness, and I did have a very bad feeling for poor Hayate. He spent too much time outdoors tending to the garden, and that week was particularly windy and cold. I even heard that many people caught a cold for being careless. I could only pray that Hayate would watch his health. After Hayate's gone, Nagi and Sakuya were busily chatting at the guest room. Sakuya was particularly worried about Nagi continuous skipping classes. From what I've heard about Maria she ditch the entire semester last year. Nagi's confident that she and another person, whom she addressed Isumi, would make it through the school year since they have scored very high grades on their subjects. I do not know, but all that talk about schools and grading opened up my appetite. Unfortunately, Nagi would not let anyone touch food, until her other guest arrived. She invited the person called Isumi to her home for tea and lunch, but Sakuya's tone become quite obnoxious since she has had terrible experiences with Isumi, bringin to topic that Isumi gets lost easily since lacks any decent, whatsoever sense of direction. Mom, exactly I could not tell how much time went after Hayate left, but the hours seemed like seasons to me, and my stomach growled like a furious lion. On my usual strolls at the Sanzenin mansion, the whole lights of my world turned on when I heard the bell rang. I hurriedly ran like wind caught by the devil realizing that Hayate had come bringing along with him the tea and supplies, but my heart stopped with a thunder cold when opening the door I came with the most beautiful sight my eyes ever gazed upon. A precious girl stood at the front of the gate. She was wearing a lavender-purple kimono, and her voice sounded like a soothing lullaby to my ears. She seemed quite concerned and fearful, since the boy that brought her to the entrance left on a hurry. I freaked out instantly the moment she started to cry, because he told me that the boy got himself wet and caught a cold, and she heard about people dying for catching a cold. It took me a great effort to calm her down, and after she cool off she told me that the boy went somewhere place and is her fault, since because he helped her he got his expensive cashmere coat ruined. And I said to myself, "Oh My God! You got to be kidding me!" Unfortunately, Mom I voiced out my monologue, and how much shame I felt on that moment when that moe beauty happened to hear my words. Greetings, Your boy P.S. Mom, I got a very bad feeling about this incoming surge of cold outbreak. Maybe Santa is behind it after all.
