I have been quite surprised at how little attention this series has been getting... hopefully that's a good sign for darkhorse status? Maybe?

Next season has some serious monsters coming out, mainly mahouka and Jojo, and with white fox also doing akame ga kill, there's just no attention left for this. Hell, even SoL fans now have more kiniro mosaic to look forward to than this.

Well, curiously this is amongst my top three to look forward to next season... go figure. Perhaps the lack of attention will prove justified, though. Who knows?

It could be a nice SoL, yes, but right now I'm more hyped about Kiniro and hanayamata in that department. Still, won't hurt to check this out.

I have to say the lighting of the scenery is surprisingly well done, not too much or too less. It adds dreamlike serial feeling to the scene.

The announcement for AgK pretty much means a lot of the attention on WHITE FOX were focused on that show instead of this one.

Next up is Gochuumon wa Usagi Desu ka? which has the official English title Is the Order a Rabbit?

Premise: Five girls named after café drinks work in three different cafés in a Japanese town that looks inexplicably like Europe. They do cute and funny things.

The first words out of my mouth when I opened up this volume were, “Dear god, the art is beautiful.” Seriously, I love this art. There’s pretty much nothing on that front I would complain about.

As for the actual content of the manga, it has all the tropes of your typical moe slice-of-life manga revolving around 4 to 5 cute girls who do cute things–and I absolutely loved it. It’s basically everything appealing about the genre, done right. If you don’t like the genre in the first place, you probably won’t like this either. But if you are into moe slice-of-life 4koma, you can’t do much better than this.

As is the norm for manga of its type, there’s no “plot” per se to summarize, nor is there an obvious hook like Chikkoincho had. It’s cute girls doing cute things, except with a café theme. So let’s talk about the biggest draw: the characters.

Main girl Cocoa (Hotou Kokoa = Hot Cocoa) is your typical ditzy, friendly main character. You’ve all seen this character type before, but she does play a necessary role in getting the rest of the cast to interact. Like I said about this manga in general, Cocoa is a familiar trope done right. Plus, she has some traits that, while not radically deviating from her archetype, are interesting enough to set her apart.

The girl whose family she’s boarding with, Chino (Kafuu Chino = Cappuccino), is the most adorable creature this side of Saturn. Imagine Chiaki from Minami-ke, but without the sharp tongue and tendency to call people “bakayarou”. Everything about her is precision designed to bust your moe meter. Seriously, my body was not ready for Chino.

Chino’s family owns the café where she, Cocoa, and another girl, Rize, work (Tedeza Rize = The des Alizes, which quite frankly I’d never heard of either). Rize fills the cool tsundere role. She’s got a mysterious past that she casually makes reference to now and then. While no concrete details have been revealed, it looks a lot like she’s the daughter of a mafia boss. Perhaps as a result, she’s a huge military buff. She’s also sexy as hell and gets the best fanservice. Dat body.

Kimono-clad Chiya (Ujimatsu Chiya = Uji Matcha, a Kyoto blend of traditional powdered green tea) is your calm, refined, somewhat head-in-the-clouds Yamato Nadeshiko(?)-type character. Imagine a cross between Saginomiya Isumi and Chitanda Eru. She fills out the cast pretty well, and it’s hilarious how much she and Cocoa are on the same wavelength.

Sharo (Kirima Sharo = Kilimanjaro blend coffee) honestly didn’t make a huge impression on me. Her distinguishing features are that she accidentally(?) acts like an ojou-sama despite barely being above welfare level. Also, she’s lesbian for Rize, but who wouldn’t be? She’s sort of like Lucky Star’s Miyuki, I guess. Technically part of the main group of girls, but the interactions between the others get on fine without her. I dunno, maybe I just don’t “get” her.

That’s about the only complaint I have. Just as you can have a good premise with terrible execution, you can also have a hackneyed premise with great execution, and this is an exemplar of the latter. Not to mention, there’s a good several intriguing, as yet unexplained background mysteries, including Rize’s past and the rabbit (you have to see for yourself). The art is magnificent, both on a technical level and in terms of appealing to my taste, and the jokes had me laughing the hardest out of any of the manga I bought.

Also, I absolutely, absolutely loved the fortune telling chapter. I’m a sucker for those kinds of plots. Meta elements, contrived coincidences, plot hooks coming full circle–I eat that stuff up. Kind of like episode 6 of So-Ra-No-Wo-To, where the more you think about it, the more intricacy you notice.

Anyway, it’s actually getting an anime adaptation a season from now, so if my summary sounded interesting to you, be sure to check the anime out. I’m definitely ordering the next volume of this.

She is Risa Taneda not Rise. And someone here mixed the name ordering. Why Uchida Maaya but Satomi Satou? Use either western or eastern one for all the girls.
