I bought some volumes of the manga on this weekend because of the anime so my collection is currently 3, 4, and 6. I reaaaaally need 7 now.

Great Im starting to drive myself crazy again...

Gah I just have really hard time with Naru and Oliver Davis. Going back and reading vol 3 and 4 again I carefully read the part with him mentioned and I just think there are too many wholes in the story at this point. Now Cilica did mention something cryptic happening in vol 9 concerning esp powers so Im gonna have to wait for that since only 5 vols have been rel in the US so far (gah I want more!!)
I do think Lin is somehow related to Naru call it a gut feeling but still I cant tie them to Davis, it just wouldnt make sense to me, at this point.
Course my insanity is also based on the few random words I saw when I clicked mercury's spoiler link too. I just have way toooooo many questions at this point.

Also, yes Im looking for answers but if any read mercury's spoiler plz do not tell me answers based on that!!! Im begging you! I only want theories at this point. Course you can base theories on that like LKK is doing but dont out-right tell me anything ok!!!

Your desire for theories is understandable although a little vague in terms of what you want to talk about, Manju. Why not post some of your specific questions and ask for theories? Even with the spoiler knowledge we have, there is a whole lot that we don't know. If we answer everything as if they're theories and combine theories with factual knowledge but not say which is which would that be okay?

Or you could just put yourself out of your misery, give up the ghost (pun intended), and read the spoiler box or pm me.

But even if you read the spoiler box, you'll still have plenty of questions. I know I do.

I know Im being vague I dont mind thoeries being based on actual knowledge since I know you guys know more then me. I just dont want someone out right saying "Naru is...." (fill in blank with any number of questions you might have about him) Im sure once I read vol 6 Ill have pently more questions again

Any major questions I have at this point really cant be answered w/o someone spoiling it for me since deep down I do want specifics but Id rather find them out over time (yes I know Im insane)

As far as I know, yes, Naru is 17. Since he's not going to school, my assumption is that he graduated early because of a genius level intellect.

Yup, Del Rey's version. I just got it at Waldenbooks yesterday. I was pretty surprised that it came out so early but I'm not complaining.

Lucky you! I was at a Waldens yesterday. I looked. (Of course, I looked for it! Did you think I wouldn't? LOL) But it wasn't in. Unfortunately, that store is too far to make a casual jaunt to. I'll have to depend on stores closer to home.

Welcome back to Manju's half-baked Ghost Hunt discussion obession! OK something I noticed a few days ago but forgot to post and Im not tagging cuz its not a huge deal.

Anyone else notice that in vol 3, Monk-san is wearing a shirt near the end of the vol it has a 4 leaf clover on it (he also wears it in the anime). Now in the anime there is no writing on it but there is in the manga. But the writing changes each time they show it. First it says "been as not as" then when they show him again it says "the dragon" and then in the next panel it says "again cash"
Im lost as to this having any meaning but still it confuses me. Just something I noticed.

It occurs to me that Mai had huge leverage over Naru in the fact that she saw him bend the spoon and he asked her not too tell anyone. I was alittle disappointed in the end of the vol when she decided to tell everyone. I understand why she got mad but she really should have just said something like "if you dont stop Ill tell". Thats huge leverage, epsc over someone like Naru. But again Mai is only 16 and doesnt think like that I suppose. Plus then we wouldnt have seen Lin get mad at Naru and that was worth it. Just something else I observed.
Also Naru says "Mai, Ill remember this" Wonder if/when thats ever gonna play out.

I noticed the shirt messages changing too. At the moment, I chalk it up to the mangaka having some fun with us. Playing mind games or something. I haven't thought about it much to be honest. Random words -- especially random English words -- are often used as decoration in manga. The words don't have any purpose other than decorative in those cases. So I figured the shirt messages were along those lines. I wonder if the messages were in English in the original Japanese version?

Mai would have had far more leverage if she had threatened to tell about the spoon bending but not actually told, I agree. However, Mai tends to go overboard and get carried away easily. She gets caught up in the moment. I think that was a good example of her typical reaction. She wanted to pay back Naru and to pay him back right then and there. Another thing, if she had held the information over his head, if she had blackmailed him, Mai would have come across as cold and calculating.

Kinda like Naru sounded when he said "I'll remember this", yes?

I'm not sure if Naru will get revenge or not. I'm certain he'll remember it because I doubt Naru forgets much. But Naru has demonstrated that despite his cold exterior he's really a kind person. He may not get revenge after all. But I bet he reminds Mai of when she betrayed him at some point in time.

Right more theory time. I am basing this around the large spoiler earlier.

If it is infact Naru's brother Eugene who is affecting Mai's dreams then I'm thinking he must be a really really powerfull ESP user - well he is a perfect medium after all. But I'm wondering how does he know all this stuff? So I think Eugene might infact be a spirit himself. That would explain why he knows so much and it could explain why Naru is interested in the afterlife so much. Remember his conversation to Mai in vol 4 about the okami(?), he said he doesn't think spirits can tell the future or read someones mind, but he does think they could tell you about death.

And if Naru is Oliver Davis then that means he has amazing PK - ST (remember he smashed a heavy weight against a brickwall or something) but I wonder if it doesn't leech his life energy or something. That would help explain why he collapsed in the well, and why Lin is so concerned about him using his power. Maybe Eugene died by over exherting himself.

Agreed, Naru does come off as a nice person sometimes and I doubt any type of revenge would follow since he just doesnt seem like that type of person. But I think he'll remind her every so often that she did do that. Again he's letting people come to their own conclusion

Earlier, Manju asked me what I thought of the look Naru gives Mai at the end of volume 5. I didn't have a firm opinion at the time. Now I do.

Spoiler for conversation leading up to the look:

Mai: That was really cruel of me.
Naru with his back to Mai: It's because you give up on people so easily.
Mai blushes.
Naru: It's annoying. You should do something about that.
Naru walks past Mai.
SFX: Whoosh
Mai: ----- Unbelievable!
Naru turns around.
Mai: I ... I just apologized to you. And you threw it back in my face. You're always like that to me!
They stare at each other.
Naru: heh
Naru looks back over his shoulder and walks away.

I guess that look over his shoulder could be an "I like to tease you" look. It could even be an "I like you" look. But neither feels right to me. I think the look is a "You just proved my point" look. The image of Naru feels too sad and disappointed to me for it to be either of the other looks.

Plus, Mai did just prove Naru's point. She automatically assumed the worst of him after his comment. What he said may not have been what people are socially conditioned to say at that moment. But that doesn't mean he met anything offensive about it either. If you think about Mai's personality, Naru is right. She's demonstrated his observation several times. And I think she did it again just then.

This is my own opnion. I dont think the removing of the name plate had anything do with this case inparticular. I think its just a very Naru-esque thing to do. Although he makes sure not to tell anyone his name, I think the hospital door is just how he is in general.

As to the importance of the nick name, Im not sure about it, I have no real theories on itp

That's a very good question. It seems to be a contradiction within the story. And that may be the answer. The novelist made a mistake. However, there's also another possibility.

This theory is based on the assumption that Kazuya Shibuya is not his real name.

Things to remember:
1) The zuso can be effective without knowing the specific person's name. Remember the hitogata in the desk? The curse was on whoever sat at the desk not on a specific person. That's one of the clues Naru uses to decide sensei is guilty not Kansei. Kansei would know the name of the student sitting at the desk. Sensei would not.

2) When Naru looks at the hitogatas found in the manhole, he says that they found his and Mai's. We see Mai's hitogata with her (English) name on it. But we never see Naru's.

3) While the anime has Naru telling sensei his name, in the manga, he doesn't. In the manga, Naru says that only the principle knew his name.

4) In the manga hospital scene, Naru never says where he thinks sensei got his name from. The assumption is that the principle told sensei his name, but Naru never actually says that. In fact, Naru never says sensei used his name on the hitogata.

Naru: I didn't tell my full name to anyone at the school. I believe the principal is the only person who knew it. And the principal doesn't know Mai's name. If Kansai-san knew our names, you'd have had a chance to have gotten them from her.

Putting all this together, here's my theory ... Naru's hitogata didn't say Kazuya Shibuya. Naru's hitogata said something like "the boss of the ghost hunters" or some other descriptive phrase. A description of his position would be just as effective as his name if I understand the hitogata used in the desk correctly.

Remember that my theory is based on the idea that Kazuya Shibuya isn't Naru's real name. If Naru's hitogata actually said Kazuya Shibuya, it wouldn't have been effective against him if Shibuya isn't his real name. Yeah I totally agree that Shibuya Kazuya isnt his real name and we pretty much got a massive hint of that in vol 1/epi 1.
What doesnt make a lot of sense to me and why I feel that the no name on the door is just how is, is based on that fact that if the sensei was trying to curse him at this point, he's already figured out that its her. What would be her purpose to try it again? (Im basing this on the manga facts since sensei doesnt try to curse him again in the manga, only in the anime ver, thats why I didnt like the animation ver of this since in that he directly tells sensei his name, which isnt like him...anyways). Im sure there's a better a explanation to why his name wasnt on the door but right now Im sticking to the "thats just how he is" theory.
I agree that the Hitogata probably didnt say Shibuya Kazuya but probably something like what LKK said, boss or something like that.
