And its not so much the shadow has control over the environment as it is the anime's way of transition from dungeon exploration to battles in the game. In any case, I enjoyed the 2nd episode, the handled the fight way better than I thought they would and the main character starts having an actual personality! Spoiler for Boss Fights:

Wow, didn't like episode 2 at all. The voice acting... I dunno it feels like they're not trying. I never say this about any other anime. So he fights some incarnation of his own emo and nobody's wondering why people can pop out of a tv.
Only thing it's got going for is the music. Meh.... I'll put it on hold for a while.

Haven't you ever found yourself having an opinion on the matter on any previous shows/games you've played? I, for one, feel Chie would be best performed by Norio Wakamoto Yukiko too.

Kuma annoys me sometimes in the game. though his S.Link stories are heartwarming, in other scenes Kuma just annoyed the hell out of me.

You people make me sick! Chie's english VA is perfection! To even question it is blasphemy of the highest level. I'm gonna just stop watching this now and wait for the english dub with the VA's from the game. It's gonna happen, it will.....

Just to put this Chie English dub voice to rest, let's say the dub studio had the right idea of choosing that type of voice. BUT there are times where some of the line readings tend to be really awkward ("My Trial of the Dragon" for example).

Yea, her voice was the only voice that I didn't like at first. Took me awhile to not be turned off by it.

Hmmm, I like what he has done to make all the little aesthetic details to give it the same feel as the game- simple things like the calendar change, stats eye-catcher, and the cut-in portrait.

Mainly the stat screen irritates me. In games, stats are used as a method of balancing and increasing yourself to qualify yourself to continue the story. Implementing stats into an anime would imply that they intend to have the characters grind monsters so they can "level up" and beat the boss battles - a factor which does not belong in the anime medium. Besides, if we're going to get that loyal to the game - look at the dialogue choices he made in the first episode. He missed all of the choices that give him a stat up. "You calling me an idiot?" No COURAGE UP for Yuu. "Are you guys alright?" No UNDERSTANDING UP for Yuu. So, how did he get his courage to level up? - again this is not a mentality I like to take when comparing a game to an anime, but if it's making everything else remain painfully loyal, why not this? A common comparison is Tales of the Abyss. Sure, the anime had a few pacing issues as well, but it managed to stay loyal to the game without any stats, or grinding, or any of that stuff that doesn't belong in the anime medium. Their tip-of-the-hat was the way they all yelled out the names of the spells when they were cast, and the words showed up on screen with similar special effects. That was a good tribute without taking it too far.

Now that is just overthinking it. All of those things I've mentioned are strictly aesthetic in nature meaning it doesn't add or take away to the overall story but it's just there as a nod to it's origin, it doesn't drive the plot in any way.

This thing would have happened even if there wasn't a stats eye-catcher because it's clearly the studio's intention to have the main character develop as the story progress; the stats eye-catcher's main purpose was simply aesthetic and to actually show a physical change... You know, just in case people don't get it.
