And VERY light on the fanservice so far, aside from a few subtle gainax bounces and shower scenes, there was nary a panty shot in sight

In regards to man vs. woman only Woman at the moment can use the IS so if there was a war man would lose since they can't use the IS. I suppose that's why Ichiko is so clueless to things about girls since because of the IS many schools probably separate girls and boys. While Ichiko is an idiot at times he still holds his ground. |

-Sho-, zephyr put up a bunch of posts about the back-story and the world of IS, and I think it sort of explains why IS units can only be used by females. Sort-of, I say, since I don't have the time to re-read the posts in detail.

@Sho
From what I know, that statement about men vs women comes from the fact that the IS is such a powerful weapon system that it practical makes all other conventional weapons obsolete, it is said that using only the limited number of IS in existence (500+), they can take over the world in three days. And since only women can pilot them well, you get the idea. Quote:

Ichika... I chart it down to 'shock factor', I suppose anyone would be utterly lost and alone when you have an entire school of girls talking, whispering, plotting, speculating, observing, giggling, snickering, laughing and fantasizing behind your back I can't blame him if he's not functioning at 100%

I definitely enjoyed the first episode and the premise for this show. For me, it feels a lot more enjoyable than the opera-like and over the top Star Driver. I enjoy simple, straight forward fun that makes sense.
There was only two things that bothered me about the show. First, why did Ichika have to share a room with another female? I know it is a lot more fun this way, but in reality, they would never do that, unless they want to purposefully experiment to see how the offspring of two IS pilots would turn out. The second issue is that the IS suits offer no protection. In the battle sequence at the beginning, one stray shot or shrapnel can take out the pilot. Well, we don't know much about the suits yet, so maybe they will offer some protection in some form. Also, the fact that they are currently being used as sports equipment might be the other reason. Still, in that battle, they should have had more protection.

Most of their weapon systems are energy-base, I think.

I think this series had a good first episode. Ichika is a pretty solid male lead and like how he stood up at the end of the episode for the duel. Willing to take things to a point, but the shots at his country was apparently over the line. Pretty good counter insult on England . Definitely some harem archetypes, but if they can mix the action in nicely could be fun to watch.
I do wonder about the IS being pushed to the sports area. Maybe an attempt by the male leaders to limit them and resist them becoming a main part of the military. I'm sure they could realize the implications if a system only usable by females (for whatever reason) became such a key part of an army, if not outright replacing most armies. Though the reaction from the class at the end seems to say that the public has already started to respond to the situation. Of course with that scene at the start of the episode it's clear the IS aren't going to stay outside of battles any longer. Wouldn't be that shocking if Ichika's sister left the sport because the upcoming situation was expected.

Pretty good for a first episode to me.. especially the first part, those actions scenes were wicked! Chuckled in a few scenes, definitely looking forward to this.
I know this might sound lame, but, the singer who sang the ED song really sounded like Mio Akiyama from K-ON!!

But it would be interesting if that is true, since the protagonist is Mr. Special. Whether this anime is thinking that much or not... Tune in, next time or the next next time or until the last episode.

Liked episode 1 a lot. Ichika is a very likable male lead, Houki is not bad at all considering she is the tsundere lead, Cecilia is the typical oujo-type with an excess of ego, but she is cute in her own way.
Something that surprised me is the amount of female side characters, each one with more or less well-defined design and voice. I liked the one wearing cat pajamas during lunch. Mecha combat looks solid, fast paced and nicely animated. Can't wait for the Ichika vs Cecilia duel next week. OP is great, both video and song. ED song is simply ok and the video is boring, I guess other characters will be added later as the anime progesses. |
