Ah... manga spear looks cooler than anime version. I like the pure iron colour and sharp shape. Sayaka's sword also looks like it fits her better than a katana. Reminds me of classic RPG.

The tagline appears to be the same as the DVD/BD volume 1 tagline. "She would not know if this encounter is mere coincidence or a necessity. Which would be, an encounter that changes her destiny"

What katana? She's been using a saber. The one in the image would seem to be a knight's sword; I guess that's fitting.

Art seems pretty decent. Pacing feels a bit rushed. I was impressed by the execution of the artstyle for the witch scene, though; lol. As for following this, I don't know how much value there will be as we have the anime already anyways...but I'll probably still read it in my spare time.

Expressive Kyubey is kinda interesting.

Has anyone read the spin-off "Puella Magi Kazumi Magica: The Innocent Malice" and how is it related to the main series?

It has it's own thread in this very forum. I very much like it, but as for your latter question, I think thus far there is only pure speculation.

When I read the chapter where Mami died, it's more gruesome because you can actually see what happened though it's still has some sort of censorship.

Well chapter 3 is out and it follows episode 3 of the anime. In the anime we didn't see Mami's death explicitly, in the manga..well...take a look...

Spoiler:

yea.....

"MAKE A CONTRACT WITH ME NOW!!" I'm sorry but after this line I couldn't stop myself from laughing anymore. Saw too many Kyubei jokes, the salaryman stuff was the tip of the iceberg for that matter. Anyway, yeah it sure looks horrifying. Though if it's worse than the animated version depends on opinion I guess.

It also drives home to the reader the fact that this show should not be taken lightly as fluff or sugary, as the bitter syrup of harsh reality (of being one of the MGs) smashes through and floods over.

It feels much more like a "normal" magical girl story compared to the main series.

First chapter doesn't seem related at all. The second chapter (untranslated) shows some interesting things. Grief seeds (that literally look like seeds), "defeating" the witches turns them back into humans, I guess they're more like Nanoha's jewel shards in how they function. There is a panel showing a silhouette of Madoka and Kyubey, but without the translation I have no idea what it means.

So I have no idea if this is some kind of side story that isn't really canon or if it's supposed to fit into the Madoka time line somewhere. Future maybe? Dunno.

Interesting note:

Anime Mami reverts back to her street clothes when she dies. Manga Mami doesn't.

It probably doesn't mean anything, but it's kind of weird her manga incarnation's powers are still functional when the whole point of her head being munched on is apparently so her hair pin Soul Gem is destroyed.

They might have overlooked it because Gen didn't specifically mention it in his script.
The first volume has been completely scanlated. It looks like this volume was done before the later episode designs were finalized. There's a drawing of Homura with her shield by the mangaka, but the shield is a large diamond shape rather than the round one used in the anime.
I wonder if the design will be revisied by vol2.
