Something Dark with a good plot

I have a bit of a problem, I have not been able to find anything to watch latetly. Sure I download some of the episodes released every week, but it would be great if someone could point out another series which I may like and have not seen. I typically like animes with a good story and a rather dark mood (i.e, hardly any "cute" stuff).

Here are the animes which I have seen (or currently watching) and like a lot:
Rurouni Kenshin Reminiscence OVA
Berserk
Juuni Kokki (Twelve Kingdoms)
Last Exile
Monster
Gantz
Ghost in the Shell 1st and 2nd seasons
Witch Hunter Robin
Beck
Full Metal Alchemist
Wolf's Rain
Evangelion
Noir
RahXephon
Gunslinger Girls
Hellsing
Trigun
Cowboy Bebop

And I actually didn't like Boogiepop, Serial Experiment Lane, Technolyze nor Paranoia Agent. I tried to like them, but things were just a tad too slow moving for me.

Evangelion, Gunslinger Girl, Trigun and cowboy bebop dark?!, well maybe a bit but there some actino, comedy etc in it too..

Personally I don't like dark animes.

Here are some titles. I have no idea what they are about but they may be to some use for you:

Fist of the northstar
grave of the fireflies
Vampire hunter
Angel Sanctuary
ninja scroll

You definately don't want to miss Shingetsutan Tsukihime. "Dark with a good plot" is exactly what that anime is about. I guess it's licensed in the US, so you might want to buy the DVDs.

Elfen Lied is also great, but a bit gory. Sometimes it even made me feel slightly nauseated, but the ending was incredibly good. Well worth it.

Yeah, I forgot to list both Elfen Lied and Tsukihime, and they are indeed both excellent animes.

As for the comment regarding Evangelion, Cowboy Bebop and Trigun. Well, I thought Evangelion was quite dark, character development wise in any case. As for the CB and Trigun, I liked both series for their story driven episodes; which were dark. In the case of CB, I only really liked 5 or 6 episodes (the story driven ones). And trigun, I loved the second half as it did not have the comedy.

You should go try Z Gundam since the Box Set is out in the US.

Elfin Lied gory.. vividly gory, yet it was not done in a bad way.

And the story...omfg..the story of Elfin Lied... I mean, I took me weeks to get over watching that anime.

It is literally one of those shows that will change your life IMHO.

Apart from the ones mentioned

Wolf's Rain : pretty dark end-of-the-world atmosphere

Gilgamesh : another off-world anime

You could try out Vampire Hunter D, it's pretty dark, however I'm not too sure if there's a series for it, there is a movie though.

'Grave of Fireflies' is . It's a slow+sad type of anime, and I know you won't like it. Well, maybe.

Emphasis on the Gilgamesh. You simply will not find a more consistently dark, mature anime anywhere. (by mature, I don't mean hentai- there is only one scene with slight nudity). Some people don't like the art style on this one, because it IS quite different, but I love it. I'm probably the biggest Gilgamesh fanboy on this board. Anyway, the series is licensed but well worth it- just give it more than 1 episode and you should be hooked.

me a diehard Gilgamesh fan too! Yup the art style is very good to build the consistently dark and depressing atmosphere. Personally I fall in love with this series right from the start

Seeing that no one has mentioned this yet, Interlude is one helluva good OVA. A bit short, a bit too vague, but it is dark and sad in its own way.

Well; Gilgamesh was very good but it took a bit longer than 1 episode to interest me, the art being ... unusual , and the story stopping for 3-4 ep's in ep 4-8. Apart from that minor flaw, Gilgamesh rocks

How about GunGrave? It's definitly one of the best plots ever in an anime, and the it's "dark" aswell. try it out.
