'Accidental war may disrupt China's progress'
Quote:
Beijing (Feb 5, Tue): A top People's Liberation Army (PLA) general said China should do its utmost to safeguard the hard-won, peaceful environment it had secured for its own development, giving a rare glimpse into the top brass' thinking amid tense territorial disputes in the East and South China Seas.

"It is the final minute of the race," said General Liu Yuan, political commissar of the People's Liberation Army's General Logistics Department, in a reference to the country's past 180 years of history, when efforts to revive the country's economy were repeatedly destroyed by wars.

"We should not be interrupted by accidental [warfare] again," the official Global Times quoted Gen Liu as saying on Monday. "What the Americans and the Japanese fear is that we will catch up with them, which is why they exhaust every possible means to suppress China's development. We should not fall into their trap."

In an attempt to justify his argument that China should be patient and swallow any possible insult until the day it was strong enough to fight back, Gen Liu recited several classic strategies.

These included paramount leader Deng Xiaoping's "keep a low profile, never take the lead and bide your time"; King of Yue kingdom Gou Jian's "sleep on firewood and taste the gall bladder to remind himself of the bitter taste of defeat and to reaffirm his desire for revenge"; and the legendary general of the Han dynasty (206BC-220AD) Han Xin's "shame of crawling through between someone's legs".

Gen Liu said that while it is important to maintain a strategic peaceful period in order to ensure long-term peace, China should not shy away from taking military action when it is warranted.

"Still, to the nation, [war] is the last option," he said.

SOUTH CHINA MORNING POST
Emphasis mine. My guess? There probably won't be a shooting war. But China won't be playing nice either, not when the country's honour is at stake.

In Tucson, Arizona, a rally against illegal immigration was interrupted by the rant of a Native American man, who called them all the real "illegals" for invading his country. The Native American man yelled at the protesters, “You’re all f*cking illegal. You’re all illegal.” The group had gathered in Tucson to protest the illegal immigration by Central and South Americans. But the man, pushing his baby in a stroller, decided to stage his own protest. “We didn’t invite none of you here. We’re the only native Americans here,” he shouted. “Get on with your bogus arguments. We’re the only legal ones here,” he yelled.
now this is funny.

35 Ancient Pyramids Discovered in Sudan Necropolis:

"At least 35 small pyramids, along with graves, have been discovered clustered
closely together at a site called Sedeinga in Sudan.

Discovered between 2009 and 2012, researchers are surprised at how densely
the pyramids are concentrated. In one field season alone, in 2011, the research
team discovered 13 pyramids packed into roughly 5,381 square feet (500 square
meters), or slightly larger than an NBA basketball court.

They date back around 2,000 years to a time when a kingdom named Kush
flourished in Sudan. Kush shared a border with Egypt and, later on, the Roman
Empire. The desire of the kingdom's people to build pyramids was apparently
influenced by Egyptian funerary architecture."

Karl Rove defends super PAC, cites Todd Akin

Quote:
Karl Rove roared back Tuesday night against tea party critics within his party who say his super PAC’s new initiative is aimed at undermining their candidates during Republican primaries.

“Some people think the best we can do is Todd Akin and Richard Mourdock — they’re wrong. We need to do better if we hope to take over the United States Senate. We need to get better conservative candidates and win,” Rove, a former White House adviser to President George W. Bush, said on Fox News

A number of prominent Tea Party and grassroots leaders see the creation of this new group as simply an offshoot of the Republican establishment, and warned that backlash was imminent.

“They want power, and they will sacrifice principle for power. We will not sacrifice principle,” said Amy Kremer, head of the Tea Party Express, a prominent grassroots organizing group.

I see that Fox News finally dumped Dick Morris yesterday. Even Roger Ailes has to draw the line when dealing with someone so consistently wrong as Morris has been. Here's a little compilation of Morris's predictions that never came true beginning with the 2008 Vice-Presidential debate though the election of 2012.

Boy Scouts Will Postpone a Decision on Admitting Gays
http://www.nytimes.com/2013/02/07/us...n-on-gays.html
Quote:
The Boy Scouts of America, which reconfirmed last summer its policy banning openly gay people from participation, then said last week it was reconsidering the ban, said on Wednesday that it would postpone a decision once more, until May, as talk of gays in the ranks has roiled a storied organization that carries deep emotional connection and nostalgia for millions of Americans.

Mayor Backs College’s Plan to Welcome Critics of Israel
http://www.nytimes.com/2013/02/07/ny....html?hpw&_r=0
Quote:
Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, a vocal supporter of Israel but also a frequent advocate of free speech, on Wednesday forcefully defended Brooklyn College’s decision to co-sponsor a panel discussion about a movement that calls for economic boycotts and sanctions against Israel.
. Mr. Bloomberg said he “couldn’t disagree more violently” with the movement, known as B.D.S., for Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions. But he said a university should be free to sponsor a forum on any topic, “including ideas that people find repugnant.”

Show me a human civilization that is/was "honorable", and I'll have a unicorn to sell to you ;p

As for the actual likelihood of a shooting war between China and Japan/US, it's probably even less likely than the US and Russia getting into a shooting war. Open conflict serves none of the party's interest, in fact it would probably be the worst thing that can happen for all involved. And since none of them are near-failed states where extremists are positioned to overthrown the government, it's just not going to happen.

Manhunt underway for ex-LAPD officer suspected of shooting 3 cops

Quote:
A manhunt involving multiple law enforcement agencies was underway early Thursday after three police officers were shot -- one fatally -- in Riverside County. Authorities believe that the suspect is a former Los Angeles police officer already wanted in connection with two Orange County slayings.
The suspect, Christopher Jordan Dorner, 33, wrote an online manifesto threatening to harm police officials and their families, authorities said, and he is considered "armed and extremely dangerous."

Russian fighter jets breach Japan airspace

OK, now what?

Quote:
Two Russian fighter jets have violated Japanese airspace, prompting Tokyo to scramble its own aircraft, reports say.

Japan lodged a protest after the planes were detected off the northern island of Hokkaido for just over a minute.

The incident happened after Japanese PM Shinzo Abe said he was seeking a solution to a territorial dispute with Russia over a Pacific island chain.

Russia's military denied the incursion, saying the jets were making routine flights near the disputed islands.
Mr Abe was speaking on the anniversary of an 1855 treaty which Japan says supports its claims to the islands.

The four islands - which Russia calls the Southern Kurils and Japan calls the Northern Territories - are the subject of a 60-year-old dispute.

Because of the dispute, the two nations have not yet signed a peace treaty to end World War II.

'Extremely problematic' "Today, around 03:00 (06:00 GMT), military fighters belonging to Russian Federation breached our nation's airspace above territorial waters off Rishiri island in Hokkaido," the foreign ministry said.

Japanese F-2 fighter jets were scrambled, as the Russian Su-27 planes flew south over the Sea of Japan before turning back to the north, Japan's Kyodo news agency said.

Defence ministry official Yoshihide Yoshida told journalists it was not clear whether the incursion was intentional or accidental, but described it as "extremely problematic".

Roman Martov, a spokesman for the Russian air force's eastern district, was quoted by Russian media as saying the planes did not enter Japanese airspace.

The flights were "strictly in accordance with international rules on the use of airspace and did not involve breaching the borders of other states", he said.

Japan last reported an incursion by Russian aircraft in February 2008.

Those pilots were completely off the mark if they were supposed to do drills over the Kurils. If they keep on holding the same speech, then I'm the Queen of England.

Seriously, what the hell is going on all out of a sudden? Everyone has a beef against Japan these days. And that was even before Abe was elected.
