I don't think he's inept. This event is just like episode 2, in his first confrontation with L. Light is by nature extremely self-confident, so he generally feels very secure in his own superiority -- until taken by surprise. L shocked him out of his complacency with the fake L telecast, and Light made the mistake of killing the guy. Here, after several years without serious competition, he's suddenly confronted with an unexpected situation again. And, like before, he takes the hasty solution of simply killing the problematic person -- and backing himself into a corner again.

But now that he knows the extent of the other person's resources (diverting a passenger plane, landing in the middle of nowhere, an underground bunker, and a MISSILE, for crying out loud), he'll definitely be more subtle and wily in future confrontations.

I don't think it took 5 years. It was shown at the end of the narration in episode 26, but I think it was just meant to surprise the viewer after seeing all that information about how Light pretty much has the world in his hands. After all, N said Mello had been gone from the orphanage for about 4 years.

The developments in this episode kept me cringing at the edge of my seat. It's obvious that L has been caught up with the next generation to L.

Mello absolutely pawned Light without letting him give a chance for a counterplan and cleverly covering his traces.

To spill salt to the open injury Light had no other choice left but to ask for N / Near's help, and his failure for allowing the note to be handed without even tracing the culprits earned him a humiliating scold from N.

This is awesome how the second arc is turning out. Light is getting cornered and not allow more free choices, as he did in the first arc when his only worry was outsmarting L for the victory.
He is now caught between the game set by Mello to challenge Near for the race to see who gets to capture Kira first.

My reasoning for Light not taken action is that if he should had kill Sayu at the moment the trade was taking place he will be put on straight suspicion that he is Kra by both Mello and Near.

Fortunately, Light didn't because his human emotions won him over his God's complex. Just like his father put no doubts on his mind to deliver the note in exchange for Sayu's freedom.

As well, I am certain that the note was not inside the missile. Mello arranged the act to fool everyone else primarily because Near is as well on the investigation and could have easily read his movements.
The note remained on the underground complex, and it is obvious that Near already realized that the missile was the decoy. He waited to prove his suspicions were right the moment that many of the SPK members passed away just a couple of hours since the trade was made.

The animation for Near was absolutely cool and creepy, since his face was shown more ghostly and ethereal than that of L's. And what I can say for Misa's gung-ho when she starts to pack her things industriously.

The one who I feel the most sympathy was Sayu, since she was literally taken off from the safety of her home and family, and held hostage to virtually unknown and unseen assailants.

Add the fact that the masked guy made seem real that he was actually shooting her, though he shot the bulletproof glass, nearly broke her mind.

Wasn't it supposed that Rem explained to Misa that Ryuk got his second DEATHNOTE by tricking the Shinigami king?

Or is it that it was just a rumor? And that Ryuk was not unable to accomplish such an ominous feat, and instead picked up that unknown Shinigami's notebook when the latter lost it?

Light not killing Sayu proves that Kira is someone in the Yagami family. Kira kills anyone who gets in his way and he already killed the Director of the police force to prevent the trade. Why not kill Sayu? Why is she so important? If Light had killed Sayu and Soichiro it would prove Kira could not be someone in the Yagami family.

I don't rely like it now. Yeah L's killed thats cool but that Near guy pisses me of. It was more intersting watching L vs Light. It's just me or Light got kinda dum. In my view Light was wayyyyy smarter at the begining of the series.

Mello doesn't *know* Kira killed the director; he just suspects it. Not killing Sayu doesn't say "A Yagami is Kira," it does say "Either Kira doesn't know about it (which is possible, and this was explained more in the manga) or a Yagami is Kira."

However, killing Sayu and/or Souichiro would have made it pretty clear that Kira knows what's going on with the kidnapping, casting extreme suspicion on those 4 still working on the Kira case, whose names Mello knows.

The information about Sayu being kidnapped was much more restricted than when news about the Director broke out. Only the four people in that room were aware of it, and if Sayu died, the field of possible Kira candidates would have narrowed immensely.

it kind of annoys me that they cut out some large details here and there, as well as details that explain some things. I guess it keeps the pace going, but I think some of it was unnecessary...

I'm going to discuss some things that were cut from the last few episodes, but I'm avoiding any direct spoilers. Still enclosing it in tags for safety:

One of the big things was (as noted before) Near and Light don't exactly hit it off. Near treats him like a nobody, and basically says the new L is useless and hasn't done anything in the last several years other then let Kira's popularity grow. Hearing Light's thoughts of bloody murder would have been nice.

Light also had a much clearer line of reasoning for why Kira killed the Director and that was why Sayu's kidnapping should be private to the team, which was a little muddy here I feel. He's still sharp, and he uses this to build confidence that Kira ISN'T among the team. He also develops something for the team specifically for the exchange to use, showing he's being as prepared as he can be. (I won't say more on this, since Madhouse may write it in later) Since they cut out a lot of people's thoughts and preparations, we don't get as much of the intelligence on the surface as before.

There was a lot of byplay between Near and Light that admittedly would have slowed it down... but some things could have been used. Near doesn't tell Light about Whammy then and there, it's actually something Light maneuvers him into having to give it up. part of this involves a large scene that was cut, but they still might have time to introduce it out of order. From the preview of next ep... probably not. Besides the tools, Light was having Misa look for a picture of the criminal they saw in the airport (not judging criminals at such an important time), and passes his name to N so they can track down who the kidnappers are. N actually gets a '!' at the info... this is conjecture, but I think he finds it odd that L found that out so fast...

Aggh... so frustrated. I like the pace and the touchups of the new stuff, but they should have given themselves more time to maintain the tactics of the manga. Near's mannerism too is much more like L than in the manga, although he still has his odd little eccentricities.

I just wanted to comment for people to understand, all the parties actually had a lot more thinking and tactics involved in this sequence (even Mello) that got nixed.

Also, as for why Light left the team around... I think it's because A) he's gotten a little complacent, which they even suggest on the back cover of the manga (so not necessarily canon, but possibly), and B) he needs the team still. People are still hunting for Kira, and now he has both the safest position from that AND a place where he can always ask for people's information and resources in the matter. In other words, he has every excuse to keep tabs on everyone's investigations and information, including who's looking for what... he's not nearly done changing the world yet, and he's taking his time because societal change is slow to take.

Talk about being out classed Lights own arrogance will be his downfall. The pressure is obviously getting to him and i hate the way he treats Misa but you know what she asked for it accepted Light for all his assholeiness so i cant feel that bad.

Just thinking about Misa's life span again, shouldn't it be incredibly long?

She quartered her remaining life for getting the Shinigami eyes twice. However, she already had a longer life span since a shinigami gave her his accidentally. And then Rem!

Remember Rem took over from Light which meant she probably carried out dozens of killings a week, at the very least. She would have a store of hundreds to thousands of years of life span that got passed onto Misa.

Did Light realise this? Was it part of his plan? Does he intend to find out how to steal some of Misa's life span somehow, or did he just want to ensure that Misa would be around so he could use her eyes?

<Movie spoiler removed> I like Near, he's similiar yet very different to L and I'm surprised how much they've upped the ante to make up for L's death. Just seems a shame that he's not a part of it.

I'm pretty sure that what was transferred from Shinigami to Misa was their "life" not their "lifespan." They died so Misa could live on but there was no transfer of their lifespan to Misa. It's never really explained clearly but that would make the most sense.

God, this episode was so hilarious this time around.

I loved the way the author did the getaway phase of the exchange. Wow, that was so pathetic, an untraceable missile. What the hell, where did that come from? You know I was starting to accept the fact (as a weak plot point) that as people still new to the scene, Mello and Near, that their quick massive gain in influence and resources could be overlooked (starting with the Near's meeting with the president). But this is getting ridiculous. A plane hijacking, in America, in the year 2012 (or 2013)? An underground base? An untraceable missile?

I still haven't seen Mello or Near do anything smart. Mello just has the resources to pull some very serious over the top plans and Near... Well he just stacks building. You're not cool, buddy! Sitting there twirling your hair! These sucessors don't live up to L at all.

And how could Light not have prepared anything for the exchange? And isn't the stance of the police to be, "Don't negotiate with the terrorists..." I would of used a fake Death Note with one real page from the real Death Note. With this, it will pass the test but he won't be able to use it for long. Or put a bugging device on it.

PS. I was wondering about something, doesn't the Death Note run out of space? Or do the names disappear as soon as the person dies. This would help to explain why L didn't do a writing analysis on it and why after 5 years of convicting criminals to death, there's still space left.

Misa is Excel from Excel Saga. With her hair down she looks just like her and she has always acted like her. I thought it interesting when Light declared that the world is rotten in the first episode just like Il palazzo. I had noticed the similarity before but in this episode Misa as a character was indistinguishable from Excel. The similarity is so uncanny that it is probably more than coincidence. (Note: Excel Saga was my first real anime and Death Note is becoming my favorite anime)
