How can I fix this error?

When I was trying to install something in my computer it says "Access violation at address 00409942. Write of address 00401000."

What's the solution for this kind of error?

Help please. I was trying to install Gimp so I can study and learn how to do sigs and this error shows up.

If you're using Vista, try clearing the browser cache and downloading again. Has resolved the problem in many cases.

I'm using Windows XP.

I'll try to do what you said.

Could be bad memory.

Try running memtest86 and see what it reports. You can also just try shutting down the computer, then removing and reinserting the memory. Sometimes that alone is enough to fix the problem.

Could be either a bad memory, or a segmentation fault (in which case it's an application error/crash).

I'd try what SeijiSensei says. Bad memory seems likely. Have you noticed any other sort of strange behavior?

Thank you for your help. I've already fixed this error.

I tried downloading again the installer and thank God it was the solution.
