Holy crap if I had a dollar for every time I made an absurd offhand comment that makes people look at me funny like Watashi does I'd be... uh... I forget.
The first segment has to be the funniest I've seen in this series. Comments to follow tomorrow. Last edited by MeoTwister5; 2010-05-22 at 11:45. |

The resets have been everything but ordinary: everything seems interrelated, and other forumers have noted such. I've attempted to expound and illustrate the interconnections, resulting in this post that has more than a fair share of pictures.
Episode five is highly similar to episode three but differs in the admission, finally, in episode five, that he is also the cause of his undoing, and this will reflect in his future actions.

This series is actually pretty full of sad ironies on Watashi's part, and episode 5 makes most of this apparent.
The irony of the almost hive-mind mentality of the softball circle and it's patron company compared to the nature of the product they're selling is both creepy and hilarious. Episode 5 actually manages to focus more on Watashi's sense of individuality as compared to the other episodes, mostly because it clashes with the royal jelly drones of his circle. Now we get to see a lot more of how different Watashi really is from most of his peers, in both the negatives and the positives. At least we know that he isn't exactly what you would call a weirdo or an eccentric, he's really just... different and unique with some very unique outlooks on the world. If anything actually, his sense of the individual self becomes really apparent when compared to the more herd-like minds of not only this reset but some of the previous ones. He's actually NOT anti-social as some would perceive him as. The film and cycling circles come to mind, and like those episodes he's the outspoken and independent member despite Ozu's influence. He isn't easily swayed by the collective will (Ep5's softball circle) or the charismatic leader (or lack thereof, Ep2's film circle). When he is he at least manages to maintain his self and not become a mindless follower like everyone else. The irony in this of course is that his rose-colored life would probably come into being if he actually decided to just go with the flow. And then there's the irony in Ozu. For someone who's actually pretty able to follow his own will and beliefs he gets easily swayed by the last person he should be listening to. Again the damn devil on his shoulder. Sadly there was barely any Akashi in this episode, but Watashi could really use to listen to her more. In the end it's not as much the circumstances that keeps his life like this as much as it is his personality. I'm not criticizing his sense of self so much because I think it will be one of his redeeming qualities, but one of the other layers to his mind that the show hasn't fully explored yet that will reveal why he will continue to be stuck in the loop until he changes something in himself. |

This is just a hunch I have, but I bet that there are 4 different "continuities" total.
Let's call them A, B, C, and D. Each of these continuities overlaps with two other ones in some way. So, B overlaps with A and C, C overlaps with B and D, etc... Then there's the room itself which overlaps with all 4 continuities. Let's call that "E". To draw a picture: AAB DEB DCC ... I could be wrong.

The sixth episode was so, so good. It was the funniest episode in the series, but it was also extremely serious with its Freudian implications and its sheer pathos in relating with what a lot of us feel during our younger years. What a wonderful show.
For more explication regarding the episode, kindly don't hesitate to read and comment in this post of mine.

Well, there's not much left for me to say after reading such an extensive analysis of the episode.
There's one thing I didn't see mentioned in your post and I thought was interesting: Hanuki revealing Ozu is in love with someone. My first thought was Watashi, lol. It would actually explain a lot of things. Imagine this: Watashi eventually ending up with Ozu instead of Akashi in the last episode. I would feel trolled so hard Hanuki used the word "ojou-sama" when describing the person Ozu is in love with though, so I guess it's probably a girl. Then again, it might just be the expression. The other obvious candidate for Ozu's possible love interest is Akashi, who was sadly missing from this episode. It was definitely a funny episode. Ever since I saw that "Lucky Luke" guy in the opening, I was wondering what exactly it would be. I never thought he would represent Watashi's sexual desire. A cow-boy named "Johnny" and voiced by Hiyama Nobuyuki... that's pretty awesome.

Anyone notice how the episode didn't rewind at the end? Just the clock was shown briefly. And Watashi did mention only wanting to go back a few hours...I wonder if the next episode will show him alternatively choosing to meet one of the other girls instead of rewinding all the way back to his club choice.
This was a really entertaining episode, though I'm missing Akashi.

With episode 6, Tatami Galaxy is now my 2nd best series of 2009-2010, just under Cross Game and a few notches above SoraNoWoto.
It would seem that at least for episode 6, Watashi's getting wise to Ozu's... questionable influence, but again Watashi's inner conflict's with his ideal life and the real world again makes him almost unconsciously follow Ozu's plans. While you can understand through his broken English on the OZ news that his friendship with Ozu is tenuous and rather one-sided at best, this love-hate relationship gets the better of him especially during the moments he hits rock bottom (and he always does, the poor bastard). As a nice break to previous episodes, rather than the shit he usually goes through in his clubs this one focuses more on his heterosexual relationships, which is really where I suspect is the part of his psyche that is the root of all his eventual issues. In a way it sort of makes this a rather... unique romantic comedy of sorts. It's almost ironic that for someone who desperately wants the find the Raven-haired girl he has such big fears of intimacy. He gets so aggressive on the offense, but when she's the one on offense his defense leaves a LOT to be desired. Of course I'm one to talk for reasons I won't bore your with. And of course the entire Johnny debacle. That has to be the most accurate animated representation of the male libido dilemma I have ever seen, with all the subtle and in-your-face phallic imagery abounding. I should be applauding him for the amount of restraint he showed in a situation lesser men would have melted into old sticky butter (think American Pie). Despite all his faults and intimacy issues at least he knows to listen to the head above than the head below. So yeah, the battle of the ideal versus immediate gratification. I'm sure there isn't a person alive who hasn't had to wrestle with this. I could pity him but I won't because I do sort of respect his decision and I know where he's coming from. At the end of the day he's still himself despite his bad decisions and all the shit life throws at him. Nothing porn wo- I mean bad Watashi! Bad! If there's anything that is most iconic and represented in the way each episode ends, it's always the way he talks about the little trinket he has that has a shared history with Akashi, and while the episode didn't have that scene as per usual, the camera did focus a lot on it. Prophetic? Probably. I guess the next episode will likely be about what would have happened if he went to see that girl in the tower rather than getting plastered. On a side note, it's disheartening that this show is ending up the way Cross Game almost did, unloved and very under appreciated. This show needs more exposure than what it gets with FUNimation. |

There are other anime series that do not need the armor of atypical moe to speak volumes about life, war, and peace. Those, I believe, are the more deserving series. But I digress.
I hope some resolution and further progress comes to Watashi in the next episode.
