Its true that yuri is overshadowed by yaoi but hentai is many time more popular tha yaoi in the West and in fact hentai already had strong fandom long before yaoi gaining foothold in the West. At least I'm proud to be bo yuri and hentai fanboy.

I watched Yuri for one reason, its erotic.... even the romantic lines and huggings are like electricity. Don't care about plot as long as a lot of kissing and that...
Why yaoi is dominant? probably most female anime fans watched it while half of male anime fans watched yuri. |

Since this thread has now been bumped, there's something I've noticed lately that I think is pertinent to this topic.
While searching the Booru sites or Pixiv for images of my favorite yuri pairs (Nanoha and Fate, Saki and Nodoka, etc...), one thing I've recently noticed is just how often yuri turns into futanari (warning: there's an image at that link that's decidedly NSFW). This makes me, as a big yuri fan, question just how popular yuri truly is. I personally think that if a person truly loves yuri, they don't need to turn it into futanari. I think this is especially true if you compare it to yaoi, where I don't think there's any tendency quite like futanari. On a tangental note, I've also recently become aware of how there's some popular yuri manga that's never been adapted into anime (the Girl Friends manga being a good example of this). That also makes me suspect that maybe male anime fans actually don't go for yuri all that much. Again, I write this as a big yuri fan myself. I wish there was an anime adaptation of the Girl Friends manga.

About the futanari thing, someone said that some yuri became futanaris just for putting a somewhat "male" feeling in them or males are not that completely left out of the act if you know what I mean... |

Also, I have noticed that there are a LOT of one-shots in the yuri genre. Is that specific to this genre only or is it the same for yaoi?(I stay away from yaoi so I wouldn't know)

I think the closest thing yaoi has to futanari is trap-on-trap. It looks more like two girls going at it instead of two guys.

This is coming from a male-oriented mindset. It's probably alien to many that sex could happen without a penis, and if you think about it actual lesbians aren't attracted to males, but in the terms of males treating lesbians as arousal material, the penis is the easiest way to umm... self-insert.

Speaking of cocks, there are those like otome wa boku ni koishiteru which impose pseudo-yuri where one of the girls is actually a cross-dressing male. Which is obviously aimed at men.
I have been on the impression that males like yuri as much as females like yaoi (well, I do like yuri), but I'm not so sure now. I guess it's a popular addition in your hentai (i.e. 3P and above), but not so much a popular dish on it's own? Btw, which audience do you think the whole "trap" thingy is aimed at? It should count as yaoi, but somehow I get the feeling this isn't as popular among the females compared to the male audience.

I hate it when people compared yuri to yaoi. Of course yuri is many time less popular than yaoi but yuri never intended to have big market to begin with. Yaoi in other hand are porn for women. It is something that made for women by women themselves, except for the voice acting unless you count the shouta ones which usually voiced by women. Yuri is quite different. Although it still safe to say yuri is still generally appeal men but some other yuri mangas/shows are actually targeted to female readers/viewers. In fact the very first manga that had lesbianism as important plot device was actually a shoujo one. Not something for male audiences.
I think the thread starter should compare yaoi to hentai instead, which already had bigger market and wider appeal than yaoi. |

On a side note, now that you've mentioned a male perspective, it's worth noting that the readership for Yuri Hime is 70% female (1). Speaking of audience avatars I've never seen a yuri with a faceless girl similar to how hetero has a faceless guy. I'm guessing female readers feel less inclined to put themselves in there.

Whenever I read yuri hentai doujins ,I always go with the futanari ones because I always thought natural penetration is always better and more erotic. It'snot that I find non-futa boring though. I just thought real sex will always involve a cock. XD
