School Days - Overall Series Impressions & Total Series Rating

This thread is to be used for discussing the entire 12 episodes of School Days ... your thoughts about the show, overall impressions, speculation on the possible DVD only bonus episodes, etc., etc…

A few subjects you might want to ramble on about:
  • General impression of the series.
  • Opinions on the overall story, writing & plot devices.
  • Thoughts about the animation quality.
  • Will there be additional DVD only episodes and what will they contain.

  • How did the anime compare with the game?
  • Characters/Character Design
  • What the show meant to you.
  • What could the creators/animators/writers could have done better.
And so on.

The poll represents your total series rating. In other words, how you would rate all the episodes combined (1-10)? If you'd rather rate the whole series by technical/artistic merits, you can do so. An example:

Animation Quality: 1-10
Voice Actors: 1-10
Script: 1-10
Adaptation from Game: 1-10
Editing: 1-10

Average = Total Series Rating

Or a combination of the two. Or your general gut feeling.

I just cast the first vote, but I got it wrong...
I had wanted to put it 9/10, and it ended up 5/10......so please ignore it

Let me vote it separately:

Quality: 8/10
Seiyu: 9/10
Script: 9/10
Adaptation: 7/10
Editing: 10/10

Overally a great anime. I would rank it top 5 among the tv animes this year, and I will only put Lucky Star absolutely above it.

Just too ridiculous to take it seriously after a few eps. Mostly a waste of time other than the ending.

That's why I think this is a damn good anime. I like the voices and story and the impact, but the music could have used some work.

I don't know why you feel that way about episode 11.

For me, after I watched episode 11, my first reaction was: "to my child", and Makoto will be killed by Sekai.

Totally agree whith the death which killz (with a saw and a lot of blood^^).

The ending has refreshed a lot of anime suki forumers.

But do you know an anime with a perfect ending?
Maybe you have THE perfect ending to each anime, so send your curriculum vitae to Toei Animation, Bones, TNK or Overflow.
It's not too late
.
Death Note has been very criticized a lot too with its ending but personnaly I loved it. (I don't understand why people have done it, for me it's just critic for critic, so I fuck it and I'd rather make my own feeling about it).

Japanimation is like it. I have a lot of time be unsatisfied by a lot of anime endingz but for me the end of SD, this is quite good so don't be afraid.

Watch SD.
Spend a good time.
Make your own opinion.
Buy the DVDs, tee-shirts, hentais, toys... (I joke)

Be sure that anime is really original and pleasant.
An anime to have absolutely.

Edit: Oops! I forgot: I give directly a 10 to it for the global serie. Enjoy!

7/10.

It has a overall crappy story (by mixing in too many ingredients/arcs), but the ending is pretty good.

Plot 9/10: It went to where no other romance series have ever dared. Served as a refreshing change in an genre that has became stagnant in the recent years and will serve as the benchmark for "innovative harem plot" for years to come.
Music 12/10: OP serving as contrast was perfect in retrospect. ED's and BGM fitted like a glove.
Animation 8/10: Leaps and bounds ahead of the pixilated stills that claimed to be animation in the game and was above average for such type of anime.
Acting 10/10: Characters were clearly defined and never felt like script reading.

Well, I thought this would honestly be one of those typical harem romances in their innocent like ways. I was wrong. I did not expect anything that happened. I must admit its a big change for this genre but it went a little extreme. I felt the ending wasn't really great; lots of holes in a conclusion for other characters, they just drop off from ever being apart of the show. It became fun to watch what messed up things were going to happen next for me.

Well, that was great. After the comparative hilarity of episode 11, we all knew this anime was going in strange and novel directions. The destination it ended up in defines this anime as a whole. Suddenly every trivial and seemingly nonsensical decision seems to take on a new significance. It was the old switcheroo! The first three quaters of this anime are designed to throw you into the familiar state of acceptance of some of the more ridiculous tenets of this genre (when converted from game to anime) - every woman habouring a crush for the lead, one woman with extremes of emotional instability, the typical duality of the nurturing/introspective versus the sporty/outgoing... You know, the usuals. People were scratching their heads somewhat (and I'll admit to giving my scalp a good rake) at around the mid point of this anime, wondering what the hell the writers were playing at. Yet it now seems to simple and quite logical - they were pushing us around, wrongfooting, trying to generate a complete lack of understanding, trying to place us in the box of 'unsuspecting'. Some of us saw through the tricks and traps and yet still wondered quite innocently where this was going. Most of us saw something big and controversial on the horizon.

Spoiler for the conclusion, nothing concrete:

Makoto's behaviour essentially sealed his fate. He was never going to get away with his rampant lifestyle. That's the point - for some, some deeds are never overcome with a desire for redemption when you're playing with hearts like a contrived eroge or a saccarine sweet romance. Makoto payed in blood because there was no other conclusion for the anime to make unless it wanted to double back on itself and return to the realms of realism from whence it started, and it was far beyond that stage. No, we were somewhere else entirely - the ending of this anime bears absolutely no resemblence to the beginning and as if to make that point as EXPLICIT as possible, they layered over an innocent-as-you-like idle wondering from a once-romantic Makoto at the very end. The writers are showing you what you fell for, showing you where you've been so you can make sense of the journey. Makoto died for a reason - and that reason was purely to create as great a contrast between the beginning and the end as possible. Throw together a group of largely unlikeable losers willing to do the dirty on their closest friends, a loathsome lovehound whose only consideration for 90% of the show is where his next lay is coming from, and all the staples of the harem genre, allow the protagonist to take full advantage of the situation in typical eroge style, and let the whole recipe simmer until boiling point.

Sekai was bested by Kotonoha whose return to idealism was best typified in the final few shots of the anime by taking the severed head of her beloved and sailing off into the sunset. It's a hilarious send-up of her detachment and exemplifies what she wanted from Makoto in the first instance - the type of hopelessly fantastical companionship that a relentlessly bullied incommunicado lunatic craves. She's GOT what she wanted. She's satisfied! She gets the happy ending, she gets the sunset. I had a joke here about Makoto giving her head but I'll leave it. Her punishment is her reward - a descent into the bottomless abyss, completely detached - completely at sea. Nice boat, Kotonoha.

So really, what does this anime mean? Not much. It's a thumbing of the nose to expectation and realism. It's a thumbing of the nose to logical plot development and character exposition. It's a triumph of style over substance - but knowingly so. It is perhaps the first 'harem' piece that is so conscious of its most recognisable traits that it deliberately distorts them and overplays them. It is self-aware, and yet self-depreciating. It mocks itself as a typical bit-player in an overcrowded genre that specialises in dirty exercises of wish fulflilment - almost a method of distancing itself from the source material. It treats the fans of the games with a certain degree of contempt, almost as though it is saying 'this is what you'd spend your time on? These hopeless fantasies? Well get real!'. It has no appreciation for taste or decency because they are meaningless in pursuit of the goal - that nothing is more distasteful than the eager participation of the viewer in their digestion of it. Rape? Group sex? Voyeurism? Corpse mutilation? The possibility of necrophilia? Chalk them up, and hang your heads in shame. The players, and viewers, are Makoto. Those who pursue for the sex scenes, those who want to see the endings that result in bloodshed. Feeling suitably dirty?

9/10 - EXCELLENT!

It's great that there's a harem anime that finally shows what [b]SHOULD HAVE HAPPENED[b/] in all harem shows! Great to see that both the "honest" jerk Makoto and the backstabbing scheming psycho bitch Sekai to die in their respectively deserved gruesome-ness.

+++++++++++ for the mutilation of Makoto
+++++++++++++++++++++ for the "cesarean delivery" on Sekai

-1/10 I want my soul back after watching this monstrosity. Originally i said that i would probably rate the series a 5/10 but that poor excuse for an ending shattered what little respect i was going to give. To take a mediocre story to start out with and completely destroy it is beyond my comprehension. The start SD was too my liking not overly great but not bad either with great potential. Around episode 8 is when it went to shit for me.

The story is not meant to be taken seriously its anime of course. But the way they ended the series with the gory for no reason blood feast was not tasteful at all, Tell me was there any point to having Katsura cut open Sekai for check for a baby? did it really need to be done? what did it add to the story? showing us Katsura mental instability was already shown it could have ended after she sliced Sekais throat open. Also, did sawing Makotos head add anything? nope nothing there either. Some people are comparing the ending of SD to Higurashi BLASPHEMY Higurashi is not a Shojo/Shonen romance the killing and deaths in that series are directly related to the plot and is a MUST for the series plus Higurashi is a suspense drama/thriller where deaths usually occure in this genre. For the recored I was not opposed to some killing if it were done with some meaning SOMETHING behind it to make it worth the time and needlessly to say i didnt get it. Its so easy to end an anime like this with no real talent and barely any work. None of the damn problems were solved technically nothing happened. The same recycled crap just kept going around and around till the gruesome deaths at the end. You would think a story would go somewhere SD went no where so im left asking my self what is it i just watched and i honestly can not answer.

In closing the possibilities to make School Days half way decent was wasted on the build up leading to the killings nothing more, thats all it was make the drama so intense so it would justify the blood at the end. Everything that happend was only to get the audience to hate Makoto, Make Sekai the scapegoat and have sympathy for Katsura. I can sum the whole series up in couple of words.

Lies
Cheating
Sex
more lies
more sex
Repeat previous lines 12 times for each episode
GRUESOME DEATH

That is all that happen unfortunately the series will probably be rated high by most viewers because all most people wanted was blood and they got it. I honestly wonder if the writers slept well after this episode.

Sekai is not the scapegoat, she's the grand bitch in the show. Only Sekai fans will try to think her as a scapegoat due to Makoto's faults, just like only Makoto fans (yea I've seen some ) will try to think him as a scapegoat due to Sekai's faults. Actually the whole show can be summed up to these :

If you are a guy, don't be a jerk
If you are a girl, don't be a bitch
Run-of-the-mill harem anime sucks, School Days rocks.

quite educational isn't it

9/10

I am a big fan of School Days and Summer Days, so I was really excited about an anime adaption.

By the first episode, I knew it was going great.

By the fifth episode, I couldn't wait for the next episode.

It got crazier by the episode. However, it was more of a bad thing than a good thing. Characters did stupid, illogical, or unexplainable things and left viewers (that did not play the game) startled going .

Anyways, this was pretty much revolutionary in the romance genre and was one of the charms of this show.

Of course, the only thing I can complain about is that the anime makes the characters seem far worse and more stupid than they actually are. As a fan of various characters, it was somewhat painful to watch several events in the show.

I never cared too much about a bloody ending, nor did I desire one, but that was what resulted from the actions of the main character who is a complete idiot and a big jerk in the anime. But it was definitely an amazing end, despite various unexplained things.

Animation Quality: 8 (It's pretty good, but I liked the way the characters looked in the game)
Voice Actors: 9 (Sounded strange occasionally, but no real problems plus similar sounding to the game's voice acting)
Script: 8 (Crazy and ridiculous, but that was one of this show's good points)
Adaptation from Game: 6 (definitely different)

The opening theme was meh, but the inserts and ending themes win.

Farewell, School Days anime, I won't forget you!

I said the writers wanted people to think she was the scape goat not that she was, yes there is difference. Matter of opinion on if it rocks. i happen to disagree with you. i think it was done horribly i see no redeeming qualities to be taken away from the series. Except ( and this is according to a lot of fans here)

If you are jerk Die
IF you cheat Die
If your a bitch Die
if you lie Die

No matter what is said it only comes back to Makoto should die or Sekai should die or Katsura should just kill them all. Sorry thats too damn easy and too freakin lazy they had a shit load of material to write the anime adaptation and they still made bastardized it.

I don't know how to rate it. It was a fun ride, but the main characters are just too idiotic for me to care about their end one way or the order. The plot seem to be driven toward maximum amount of controversy, and very successful at that by looking at the post counts in various forums. Will watch the last ep again when the uncensored one appears, but it is certainly not on the buy list.

well IMHO the writer just wanted people to think Sekai is a grand bitch, as far as I can see that is

I think your expectation is too high. We are talking about a harem anime here, not some literature thesis or Shakespearean masterpiece. For a harem anime to deliver the "jerk die bitch die" message it's already quite a miraculous masterpiece

Well my expectations were not high to begin with iv said that since episode 1. I just find it amazing that i set my standards low and the show still managed to come in under it that alone take talent. It doesnt have to be Shakespearean but for all that is holy at least make it GOOD im not even saying great just GOOD.
