The main point of this thread is to serve as a place where official comments about 'canon' in the Macross universe can be collected.

It should also serve as a place for discussion, and for anyone who wants to ask a question specifically about 'canon'.

Now, my interest in this topic started when I read the interview below, originally posted by Renato on Macross World and first linked by Yot-chan here. The original post was about two years old, so I've had to change the reference to "Chaos Anime Taizen" slightly, but everything else is as Renato posted it, and I'm pretty certain everyone already knows how trustworthy he is, right?

And without further ado, here are the words straight from the horse's mouth (well, through a translator).

Macross 7 Fun Net is one of those dinosaur fan-sites. Seriously, it needs a cosmetic update. Still, I came across this gem of an article yesterday while reading a quote from it in the mook "Chaos Anime Taizen" [published in 2009]. The book contains a long essay on the mind of the Floating Head himself, but a particular quote from this particular interview caught my eye, so I had to check out the full text.

Basically, the first half of this page introduces an issue which will be recalled again and again throughout the three pages of text.

We all know that Kawamori never likes to do the same thing twice, hence all the Macross series being so vastly different. Well, how Kawamori chooses to address this is by playing the "movie-within-a-movie" card, over and over. Yeah, we know about DYRL being made in 2031, and Macross Zero became "Bird Human" in 2059. But here's the jewel right here:

次は「愛・おぼえていますか」何ですけど、この時以降エキセドルのデザインが緑色になっていま すね。 これは歴史の流れ上どういう風なことになっていますか。

では、「マクロス７」も「マクロス」の歴史の中で放映されたＴＶシリーズなんですか。

　そうそう、そういう解釈。だから、映画の「愛・おぼえていますか」 だけじゃなくて全部がフィクションって設定。

「愛・おぼえていますか」の予告編で「今回の映画で主役をやらせていただきますリン・ミンメイ です。 」って・・・。映画が大ヒットして、それでＴＶ版も作られた、と。

　 そうそう。それがなかなか理解してもらえない。どうしても本当のことは別にある、 って考え方をする。そういう歴史を研究して後から作られたとかさぁ。 そういうのを推理しながら、いろんな制約の中で・・・ＴＶに限るとか、 おもちゃが出るとかそういう中で組み上げられた物語っていう考え方なんだよね。 だから、いろいろ違って全然いいんじゃないかって思う。

So there you have it. The rest of the interview is very interesting too, but here is a very clear-as-crystal statement of how much Kawamori cares about continuity, or canon.

Disclaimers: I'm not trying to push any agenda or anything, I just thought I'd share this.

Secondly, since the whole Ohnogi embargo I wonder if people are weary of this kind of interview. Particularly because this one has not been published but on one fansite. Well, as I stated earlier, it was quoted in a book recently, and here is a little shred of proof that Kawamori at least did speak to the fansite admin.

There are, of course, similar ways to express this idea, as Kawamori himself acknowledged in an interview from the first volume of the Sheryl manga.

I see. So you feel Sheryl is a better fit for the shoujo manga world. And how did you feel after you read Sheryl ~Kiss in the Galaxy~. The story is a bit different, isn't it?

Ahaha, it's a nice feeling. It feels like, "aah, this is the kind of shoujo manga I wanted to see." The Sheryl that Koyama-san drew was sublimely noble and lovely.

When the medium itself changes, I think it's good if it is rearranged here and there even if it's a same work. To be frank, I wouldn't mind if you take them as parallel worlds. Hence, the settings of TV series and movies are slightly different, and the stories are a bit different too. Of course, also in manga version, even if the same facts are depicted, I think it's good to see them represented differently. In chapter 1(stage 0) of this manga, the story starts off with a part on Galaxy that we didn't cover in TV version, so as a reader I could enjoy this part.

p.p.s. I'm not trying to push a particular agenda, although I do have my own view about 'canon', which will probably become obvious over time if it isn't already. But with all the different versions of most stories in the Macross universe, not to mention the various bits of interviews, information and opinions floating around the forum, all about what exactly 'Macross canon' is, I thought it'd be nice to collect all the important information in one place for reference so that everyone can make an informed decision for themselves.

I will probably have more to add in due time, but please feel free to contribute, remembering to include your sources, of course.

While it's being branded under the Robotech label, this recently-announced Kickstarter project is being based on the Macross-derived portion of that franchise.

With that in mind, should there be a thread to discuss the game/campaign/minis/etc, or should it go into a pre-existing thread instead?

I was raised and grew up watching Robotech. I am now getting into the Macross side of things...reading up and I want to try and buy some of the movies/series. I do have a question though...I am hoping someone can help.

A few years ago i was flipping channels and came across Sci Fi showing an Anime fest which I HAD NO IDEA WAS ON! They were showing an anime that had SDF-1 in it but it was like a kiddy version. almost like a Powerpuff girls meet anime. SDF-1 was kind f chubby looking and short. No one seemed to know why the ship was there...or how to use it. Does anyone know what this show was? Every once in a while I search the Internet when I think of this show so I could watch the whole thing. ANy help?

OK that is halarious...but it was more serious than that. I nevre saw that show before. I have been trying to figure out this for ages. UGH! They were on earth and SDF-1 was in its classic pose...everyone kpt saying that it was there but no one remembered why it was there...I know I saw it. But UGH.
