2 questions concerning anime

1) Why are men's nipples rarely drawn in anime?
2) Is it just me or is the same cicada sound effect used in almost every anime it appears in?

As for 1) I have no idea; didn't they show it a lot in dragonball episodes? Don't know, don't remember.

For 2), it does seem like it. Just like how almost every school in any anime uses the same bell sound, might I add.

1) The bigger question is, what led you to even wonder about this and ask about it?
2) You've heard one cecada you've heard them all I guess.

lol for the cicada sound effect, theres lots of other sounds thats always reused:

The classic 'Tesla Coil' sound effect. You find this on TV shows, Radio, Movies even songs.

Several infamous roaring sound effects for monsters.

Diving sound effect for planes.

Car screeching to a halt.

etc.

Good question. If I had to guess, it's probably due to the abundance of customary "beach" episodes in the many shows.

someone just had to ask a cicada question^^ Having personally heard some cicadas in Japan around Tokyo, the usual cicada sound featured in many animes is actually the actual noise they make.

Note all cicadas don't sound the same. Different speciies around the world make different sounds or "calls". The particular sound of Japanese cicadas is unique to japan.

See this page for reference to real recorded cicada sounds:
http://homepage2.nifty.com/saisho/cicadasongwav_e.html
click the drop down menus on that page and it shows the location of the cicada recordings such as particular cities.

Here is the sound file for the common cicada heard around Tokyo:
http://vivace.amath.hiroshima-u.ac.j...in/tosol99.wav

This also means within different regions in Japan itself, the cicadas in each area may sound different. Since of course the ones in Tokyo are the most well known, and most anime take place there, it's no surprise they use the call for that species.

Probably learned more about cicadas then you ever wanted but good to know eh?

No, it's all interesting information, really; besides, there is no such thing as useless knowledge . In my country (Russia), I didn't have any interaction with cicadas and here in NJ, there was an invasion in the summer of 1996 with miriads of cicadas everwhere, but it was only for that summer; that's about it. I am still curious about the guys' nipples thing tough... (no, not like that )

Hmm the cicadas around here sound pretty much the same as the ones I hear in animes. Only here, you never ever hear one cicada. Usually you here every tree and branch within it, within 2 miles of you having a cicada. Also, dang them bugs are ugly, they look like GIANT house flys!

I guess you'd hear them a lot cuz they are a common noise around there. I mean, you can't have a movie or a show about life around where I am without having a cicada sound in the background at around dusk (that's when they go nuts).

As for nipples, maybe they are expressing their belief that men sould not have them. Which, I think is true, since really why do men have nipples?

The reason men have nipples is the same as why humans have appendixes. These are evolution leftovers.

Probably men look better without nipples so they are not drawn. Saves time and effort too, for not needing to draw them.

1) (Heheh) Acutually, I am sure than an episode of dbz had someone's (MAN) nipples. They weren't detailed, just horizontal ovals. Also, there is no fanservice edge to men's nipples, so why waste the ink?

(In my evolutionary class we were told that human males have nipples because there isn't any point in removing them. They aren't harmful to survival, so they just stay...there)

Question only men?

You should ask: why are women's nipples rarely drawn in anime too?

no thats not true either. hentai is something different. womans nipples are simply rarely drawn in anime because its a kind of censoring fanservice. Its not that "pornographic" like that. In shows like that censoring is also often done with carefully placed objects and camera angles, streamy and foogy atmospheres, and stuff like that. However there is a negative trend of not drawing woman nipples i think. More recent shows use other censoring tricks or doesnt censore that much at all.

TOKKO and Black Lagoon come to mind. Of course there's no reason for Revy to take off her clothes, but the prostitutes beside that guy in episode 7, IIRC, have transparent suits, meaning that nipples are clearly seen. In TOKKO, well ...

I wish Real Mayer could do something about her baring those nipples.

Guys nipples are gross. Every time I see them drawn I think Ewwwww! Seriously. It's like drawing armpit hair. (The only anime with man-nipples that comes immediately to mind is Onegai Teacher)

Really? I don't remember them being odd or gross in that. They were like small pink ovals on the guys. In fact, I don't remember any animes where they were large disgusting things.

Hentai is an entirely different kettle of fish though, as that's supposed to be erotic (um, used erotic to substitute for the various other words I 'could' use to describe it heh).
Personally I don't mind either way, male or female. If it saves a little time and money for a smaller studio for example, that's fine. If it makes no difference and a studio with maybe a larger budget (KyoAni for eg) wants to add nipples for that extra realism, that's fine too.
It's not like it's something that detracts from the enjoyment of the overall whole.

so, otherwise which common sounds we have?

a few weak horn notes one after another (morning? evening?) - explanation?
man saying out (festival/matsuri related?) ("Yo~~~"?)
toilet paper man, baked potato man.... ginger bread man (ok, kidding)

what else?
