Latvian: Why you know, it's kinda hard evading to know your native.
Russian: Almost the same, actually it's very popular in our country, so you kinda learn it sooner or later. English: Had to take it in school for several years. And I like reading English books, so x3 German: Just learning, because in my school you need to choose two foreign languages and I choose German, because I already know Russian (which was the other choice) Japanese: I like weird things. Anyways, knowing Japanese is very good in my country, because there aren't really that much qualified specialists, so if you know Japanese you can always find a good job. |

Finnish - Reason is obvious.
English - You need this everywhere afterall. Most of my knowledge in english is through my hobbies, as well as my own studies. Ofcourse there was english in school too, but I don't know if those teachings were of any use to me French - I don't know it at all as of now, but I'm starting to learn it within this month. No real reason behind it, but I thought it would be a fun language to learn. |

Eh, quite prolific, aren't we? I'm starting to feel a little embarrased, to be honest. ^^;;
Spanish: native language. Now, if Spanglish falls under the same category, then I guess I'd be quite fluent in both. x] English: I've been learning it since... God-knows-when. Hey, at least I tried. Japanese: Well, I'm barely starting to take classes and such. Hopefully one day I'll make it to playing untranslated visual novels or watching raw anime *_* French: Took a couple of years at school- though I can hardly remember a thing now. orz |

I speak:
Latvian: My native language. Not many people speak it, but now, living in Englan I can appreciate it- it's a great language, everyone should learn it. English: Speaking fluently. I've been learning English since the age of five. Studying in England now, nobody has ever corrected me [/brag] Russian: I speak reasonably well, can read it and understand most of it if it's spoken. The reason is that there are like 40% Russians in Latvia, so it is easier just knowing the language. French: I speak it, a little worse than Russian, but all of the French people have allways understood what I meant. Don't know if I'll ever use it, but I have a bit of a plan of studying cooking in France. Japanese: Well, I might as well not list it here. I have been to five or so Japanese begginers level lessons, I can say the simplest phrases and know 100 or so random words from animes. Might consider living in Japan for a while if I learn the language to a good level. Edit: OMG, fellow Latvians! Eh, buutu dereejis aizbraukt maajaas uz 18. novembri. |

English - Through 9 years of the British education system.
Japanese - Lived in Japan from 2 - 7 years old. Fluent spoken, have trouble with more advanced kanji and vocab. Anime, RPGs and manga are easily understood. I understood most of ZnT novel #2 but had lots of kanji I could kind of understand but not read properly. Cantonese - I can speak some but that's it. Learnt Mandarin and French but they're nonexistant. |

UK English - Native tongue. I'm that sort of person who has lived an uneventful life in the same land all their life and speaks one language...
Dutch - I know next to none, but am eager to learn more once I can... A good few more I want to learn... When I see what posters here can speak, I feel left behind or something. =[ |

Native Language Cantonese (Average)
Main Language spoken English (Above Average) i think... Some language I want to learn is Japanese and Mandarin because China population is getting bigger and bigger would be really useful to learn Mandarin and Japanese just because I love the way how each word can be added with another word to make it sound more polite that really shows how much politeness japanese ppl have lol |

I know:
English- Native Tongue French-50%. I took a bunch of courses in it for a mandate foreign language in high school. But it's decaying from intermediate use to beggining due to lack of practice Want to know: Japanese- It's actually not because I want to be able to read anime/manga. Rather, I want to be able to work in a fansub group or a visual novel patching group.

English is my first language, and the only one I'm anywhere near fluent in. I've taken a couple years each of French and Spanish, back in middle school and high school, but they tended to stick to colors and numbers and family members, and hardly spent any time on m favorite parts (like conjugating verbs). Right now I've just started taking Welsh, and plan to stick with that for a few years--since its a college course, with potentially a semester abroad, I should be able to learn quite a bit more.
I want to learn Japanese, but since I'm taking another language right now that's not really an option. With watching several hours of anime a night, it's already hard enough not to answer my Welsh teacher with the very few Japanese words I've manage to pick up--if I were taking two courses at once, it would probably be impossible. |

Completely Fluent:
-English: It's my second language. I've learned more about English than I ever wanted, mainly because of IB (thanks a lot). Semi-Fluent: -Vietnamese: Of course, this is my first language. I'm fluent speech-wise but my reading and writing have deteriorated during the years. -French: The complete opposite is with French. I can pretty much understand almost all of written French but I probably can't understand French TV. Want to learn: -Japanese: Well that's kinda obvious why. :P
