If they were Japanese...I'd guess that would be ironic.

Same here; I thought JSaimoe should be starting about now; and the topic was started yesterday.

As for the characters; Nanoha and Fate, even the webcam rip didn't diminish the awesomeness of the movie; Senjougahara from Bakemonogatari, and ofc Tachibana Kanade. Others I'll have to see after preliminaries.

I at first thought Eva 2.22 would be in this year's Saimoe( since, you know, BD/DVD versions are floating about now); but that was actually in last year's Saimoe. Oh well, at least there is Haruhi movie which should stir things up .

Oh shit, it's already here. Taiga winning the Saimoe tiara still feels like it was only yesterday.

Let's see what darkhouses we have this year:
- Railgun: Mikoto, Uiharu, Saten
- Angel Beats: Kanade, Yurippe, Yui-nyan
- BakaTest: Himeji, Minami, Shouko
- Seitokai no Ichizon: Kurimu + friends
- Kobato: Kobato
- Nyan Koi: Twins, Mizuno
- Kimi ni Todoke: Sawako?
- Needless: Eve?
- Seiken no Blacksmith: Lisa?
- Sora no Woto: Kanata?
- Hanamaru Youchien: Every kindergartener in the cast?

Oh, it's that special time of the year again.

Probably won't be able to vote since my I.P is blocked.
Will just sit back and cheer for my favourites.

You're not including Working! or Kaichou wa Maid-sama? I can understand overlooking Koihime (though there are some good ones from there) and possibly Durarara (there IS Moe, and not just for fujoshi). Based on what I think your definition of 'darkhorse' means - a new, powerful entry that hasn't been seen before. But on that definition, Mikoto certainly isn't because she's been seen in Index before.

Working!: Mahiru, Popura, Yamada
Durarara!: Celty (The only headless candidate if got included), Anri, Namie?
Kaichou: Never watched it, didn't like the manga. The heroine and I forgot what her name was.

i think Misaki Ayuzawa is popular enough that she could win a round or two. After that, the major contenders will show her no mercy.

Ayuzawa Misaki may have some chance to do well in Korea's Best Moe Tournament, which is being delayed right now, but in Jsaimoe, she will really have some hard time.

Judging by Comiket77's output, Nadeko has a lot of backing. Remember she wasn't introduced until after the cutoff date for last year's Saimoe - she also didn't show up at C76 because of her late appearance. Tenshi is confirmed to be strong (#1 in "Mai Waifu" otaku polls recently) and give the Haruhi movie hit this year's February, Nagato 2.0 is here in full force.

I'm sure there's more (I wonder how the Hanamaru Youchien girls will do) top performers but my mind's not on TV anime much lately. Orbiting Pixiv when your list of favourite artists are hand-picked for Touhou (and original characters and Vocaloid) makes it hard to remember the relatively few anime-origin hits.

Initial Impressions with no Preliminary Data to work on->

Championship Tier: Mikoto (Railgun), Nadeko/Hitagi (Bakemonogatari), Tenshi (Angel Beats!), Mio (K-On!!)

Dark Horse Tier: Inami/Poplar (Working!!), Himeji Mizuki (Baka Test) Kurimu/Mafuyu (Seitokai)

Been There, But Don't Know How They'll Fare This Time Tier: Fate/Nanoha, Shana, Saber (FSN), Yuki (SHnY)

Down, but not Out Tier: Hinagiku/Nagi (HnG), Tacos/Nodoka (Saki)

Not expecting much but supporting them anyway Tier: Noda Miki/Kisaragi (GA), Ritsu (K-On!!) Suzukawa Koume (Moe Baseball), Ame (DenpaTeki), Yuno/Miyako (Hidamari), Lily (Ichiban)

inb4someone-not-listed-above-wins due to the unpredictable nature of Saimoe, though

I would put down Mikoto as a major contender rather than championship material, but I do want her to win. However, If she faces any K-on member Yui, Azusa or Mio, she might have trouble. (But will Yui face the same trouble as lucky star last year?)

Unlike Lucky Star, K-On is in progress during Saimoe this year.

i would move Hiagiku/Nagi to "Been There" tier.

I generally tried to avoid mentioning the more recent ones since I can't really grasp their popularity yet (Angel Beats being the obvious exception ). Maid-sama I'm still having doubts about, but I'll give it to Working that its girls might do fairly well in the tournament. And I do admit that somehow I completely forgot about Durarara....

As for Mikoto, even though she appeared in Saimoe 09, she got taken out pretty early (by an eventual Best 4 member notwithstanding) and had no time to strike a name for herself. In my view this is almost as effective as being new.

Not sure, but I have a feeling that Fate is still a strong contender.
Spoiler for just saw this on another thread:

Basing on that, it's possible that Fate/Nanoha might still be a good contender, and Mahiru beating Mio, Yui (Not sure if its Yui in K-On or Yui in Angel Beats, pink haired girl) and Kanade in a poll could signify that Working is popular in Japan afterall.
