I hope ShinsenSubs can finish the entire series.

Props to them for taking on Macross Frontier.

There were other times they have appeared as well, but only as recap, i.e. the Macross 20th anniversery PV, images in Macross 7 during the episode where Basara plays a part in a TV special as Hikaru.

For die hard fans you may have noticed all the obscure ref's to other macross series in this episode.

1). Sheryl Norme starts her concert by saying "Listen to my song!", this is what Basara would say before he sang.
2). The female Lt. who escorts Sheryl Norme is a Misa Hayase look alike.
3). The Chinese restaurant is decorated exactly like the "Little White Dragon" (The restaurant from SDF Macross that Minmai worked at.
4) Luka's phone is a play on Mylene Jenius's pet... the little tibble thing she had.
5) When the episode ends with Alto in Gerwalk posed as he was and the enemy posed is a play on Hikaru's first close encounter with the Zentradai in SDF Macross.

theres more, i just can't remember... tired... lol
Almost like Sara Nome of Macross Zero. There have been some speculations about how this show relates to the AFOS of Macross Zero especially with mechanical monsters as antagonists.

Sorry if this has been asked before(as this thread is too long for me to skim...), but are the Macross shows heavily related? Or can I enjoy this without having watched the earlier series?

NO those are not VF-11s. What you are seeing are suppsedly upgraded versions of the VF-17 Nightmare, seen in Macross 7. They are now designated VF-171 though.

As for the VF-19 and the VF-22, the show's time line is 2059 (correct me if I'm wrong), and IIRC Project Super Nova (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_Super_Nova), which was the project that developed the YF-19 and YF-21 prototypes seen in Macross Plus was intiiated around 2040.

The VF-17, now designated the VF-171 in Macross Frontier was already in service by 2040, heck its shadow was featured in Macross Plus even.

So what I'm saying ishope is not lost. We may still see the VF-19 and the VF-22 in action.

Considering that the SDF-1 did appear, it is.

when is you see the map (at the begining) the 25th fleet is going to the center of the galaxy whit other fleet close to 25th ,the same place where megaroad SDF-2 disapeared, so maybe the enemy is somewhat relate to the protoculture.

While I didn't love the new songs... I was surprised to find myself teary-eyed up when I recognized the ED song (DYRL).

Just watched the episode.

Wow those pilots suck.

Those guys are completely outclassed by those aliens, how the heck do they expect to take them head on? The aliens are faster and stronger.

And Alto..dear lord what's up with the hair?

This is Macross, not Robotech. Protoculture is simply the "first culture," rather than some kind of substance or energy.

Agreed, still trying to peice up that mix of a storyline robotech managed to fog up my understanding compared to watching the original Macross in all its originality (and DYRM, watching that is) without tying in Super Dimensional Cavalry Southern Cross and Genesis Climber Mospeada. Sadly while there may be some fans of the robotech series, I find it disappointing how bad the storyline got much like Tekkaman Blade in the english release (and it's "Sequel" never happened, thats what I'm trying to believe especially after such a redeeming/tragic ending... but thats another story and opinion)

Spoiler:
The VA for hikaru is dead. They have retired his character 100%. 2012 flashback is the closest thing you'll get to "closure". That basically gives you the "happily ever-after" ending for them. I have seen all the Macross Series and Movies what have you. Though I have not heard the drama CD's in which they supposedly did more with the original characters. I don't know if it was storys that were suppose to take place during the original series or after 2012. 1996 was the last drama cd done before hikarus VA died tragically/commited suicide/died in a traffic accident, or whatever other reason for his death thats floating around.

An answer the questions on is this related to other macross series.

All Macross series are related, there is no alternate universe for Macross like there is in Gundam. The only Macross series that Macross F does not use as a source is Macross II, because Macross II takes place 80years(I think) after the end of the first saga. So 40 or 50 years later from this series.

On the same point, knowing the whole background isn't needed to understand what is going on. They will explain it no doubt over the course the show. Knowing the full history will just let you know whats going on alot sooner =)

Ah I was unaware that the VA for Hikaru was deceased, which seems pretty reasonable of a decision of closing the story for those characters I can imagine.

To me, the only big hurdles wit the Macross timeline is the animation crew trying to make older technology new again.

Though I think they did an AMAZING job with Macross Zero in that department. But the oldschool Macross designs really do look very antiquated and I'm sure they'll have to play that out for modern audiences. And so far, I have no major qualms about Macross Frontier's portrayal of the technology.

Here are a few screencaps from the Frontiers of Macross tv special. The facial expressions on those guys watching Kawamori work with Lego's is priceless.

Shoji Kawamori and the process of designing Valkyries.

Behind the scenes look at Satelight's CGI work for Macross Frontier.
