Sort of, come to think of it, I have to retcon something in the old chapters.
Namely, the washouts. Those male pilot that can pilot I.S. but can't do it reliably because of pitiful sync ratio, the term is obviously derogatory, and both Saruyama and Dan almost ended up along with them. They survive and pass the qualification purely by determination and hellish workout and therapy.

Holy shit, no one's here!?
Anyways, for anyone who knows tropes: Is there a term coined for when there are two separate occurences with identical yet reversed roles? For clarity, here's some examples; Spoiler for Occurence 1:
Spoiler for Occurence 2:
And to top it off, both of them occur concurrently.

Yeap, happening at the same time. Unlike original Athena, this time I plan to have Ichika and co. face off against Silver Gospel as per normal while Inami goes out his own way to take on the Replica drones to hinder them from reaching Gospel.
While things go well for the Academy gang, Inami on the other hand... *Mobile Armor plays*

Well in fairness there should be six of them. Inami is a trained soldier but probably not quite good enough to beat all of them at the same time. I can imagine him accidentally letting a few pass him and he gets a beat down from the momentary distraction. Then cue deus ex machina

Not sure about that... I was thinking more along the lines of the Academy gang winning against Gospel and returns while elsewhere is Inami lying flat(and bleeding) in a heavily-damaged Minerva, surrounded by smoldering scraps of the Replica drones' remains.

Sort of. Then again, he'll be saying something like this towards the end:
"...Originals would've done better..." While the Replicas are drones and they fight in a more inhumane manner compared to their human counterparts, they're still technologically-challenged since they're non-IS drones. Note: Once again, you could probably reverse the sentence and it'll still give the same implication as you stated. Meh.

Considering that they're built without genuine IS tech, yeah I suppose you can call them that.
And they're smaller too, which ironically gives them speed and mobility advantage(including inhumane fighting styles) over their original counterparts when the two sides clash. Some of the replica drones do have unique styles of their own that their originals don't possess. An example would be Replica Two, the Shenlong copy, which has the ability to fire particle beams from the twin cannons as an alternate firing mode to the standard space-compressed impact shots.
