J.J. Abrams wants to take 'Star Wars: Episode VII' back to the series' grittier roots:

"In a recent interview with the UK’s The Times Magazine, director J.J. Abrams hints
that Star Wars: Episode VII may return the saga to its gritty, "space western" roots.

Abrams, known for Lost and his grandiose, lens-flare heavy take on the Star Trek
franchise, says that he is set on returning the sense of mystery that so pervaded the
original trilogy — something that critics and fans alike have complained was lost in the
prequel. To pull that off, audiences can expect to see a dirtier aesthetic more akin to
the frontiers of the Old West than the gleaming futurescapes of the prequels."

Going forward, heavy with skepticism, that quote makes me more interested in the Disney/Star Wars experiment than ever.

It was natural for the prequels to be more futuristic, the world wasn't destroied by an evil empire's economy yet...

Boba Fett Movie Shows How Disney Turns Characters Into Profits:

"A year after Disney's $4 billion Lucasfilm megapurchase, news continues to trickle in
on its plans for its newly acquired properties. The new Star Wars trilogy is already
under way, and two other "mystery" films are slated in between the trilogy films's
releases. Now Metalocalypse director John Schnepp is adding to the suspense by
"confirming" that one of these is a Boba Fett solo film."

Mark Hamill Answers Questions On Reddit: ‘Star Wars Episode 7′ Cast Will Include
R2D2, Maybe Luke Skywalker:

"Carrie Fisher may claim that Princess Leia, Luke Skywalker, and Han Solo are
returning for the new Star Wars movie but Mark Hamill hasn’t heard too much about
the Episode 7 cast yet.

The actor did a Reddit AMA today and told the crowd that he hasn’t officially joined
the cast. Hamill said that he “wasn’t being coy” and that he truly didn’t know if he
would be involved in the new movie."

'Star Wars: Episode VII' will take place 30 years after 'Return of the Jedi':

"A new Star Wars film is getting closer by the day, and Lucasfilm and Disney have
just announced some new information on the status of the production. Episode VII
— co-written and directed by J.J. Abrams — is set to begin shooting this May at
Pinewood Studios in London. For the first time, however, the team is giving an
indication of what fans can expect to see when the film hits theaters in 2015.
According to today's release, it will take place 30 years after Return of the Jedi,
which capped off the original Star Wars trilogy, and "will star a trio of new young
leads along with some very familiar faces.""

New ‘Star Wars’ Trilogy Has No Ties to Expanded Universe, Lucasfilm
Confirms:

"Our long, global crisis is finally over: The new “Star Wars” trilogy will not have any

“In order to give maximum creative freedom to the filmmakers and also preserve an
element of surprise and discovery for the audience, Star Wars Episodes VII-IX will
not tell the same story told in the post-Return of the Jedi Expanded Universe,”
Lucasfilm announced in a press release on StarWars.com Friday."

From my point of view, that just means they won't be telling one of the dozens of existing stories. Given how the writers have been up to now, they'll still use stuff, and doubt they will scrap eveything. Typically one would go for a streamlining approach and either avoid some things, or use it as background at best while telling a new story. A story presently said to be 34 years after the Battle of Yavin.

Max von Sydow! I wonder what he'll be doing? He's usually very good as the villian, but not always the case. Or if he'll just be voicing a CG or masked character?

In some ways, this is great. Death to the crappy parts of the EU.

In some ways, this blows. I mourn for the awesome parts of the EU.

Of course, as the post a few above mine says, I'm sure they'll take parts of the EU... like the resurrection of Boba Fett, because Disney and LFL won't pass up an opportunity for money-grubbing like that. Heck, they've tried to milk him for all he's worth with TCW. Fans and LFL, ruining what was a great idea by turning him from a unique and intriguing character into a one-of-millions cookie-cut-out that was just decorated differently.

Disney announces three 'Star Wars' spin-offs:

"The first of the new spin-offs could arrive in theaters in 2016, one year after "Star
Wars Episode VII," according to Variety.

After announcing the return of several original cast members (Mark Hamill, Harrison
Ford and Carrie Fisher) for "Episode VII," Disney has revealed plans to release at
least three "Star Wars" spin-off movies, Variety indicates. Disney CEO Robert Iger
announced this intention to the company's shareholders in a meeting."

Star Wars: Rebels reminds me of the old traditional six player roleplaying group from the old West End Games "Star Wars Roleplaying Game" back in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

It also seems likely it is given some of the writers involved.

I hope the new Star Wars movie (which is supposed to take place 30 years after the end of Return of the Jedi) is good.
