This was my first attempt at watching current anime since... I forget. I think the last show I watched while it was airing was Code Geass R2 and that left a bad taste in my mouth. Then again I've been watching less and less anime since Autumn 2004.

ANYWAY

I was looking over the list of new anime this season the character designs for Kämpfer caught my attention. Once I found out it was another gender-bender I was dismayed (I usually hate those shows) but I decided I might as well give it a go when I found out this was kind of like Ranma 1/2 in that the guy isn't permanently turned into a girl (probably a key reason I dropped Kashimashi like it was a hot sack of shit).

gg's comments are hilarious: "This is easily the shittiest show we've subbed." But I enjoyed the first episode. I guess I'm able to turn my mind off and just watch now, something I haven't been able to do for a while (became too jaded).

true enough but that innocent look holding the mines isnt too convincing. if it was her kampher mode then it would look like she'd readily toss it at an enemy.

Itou Shizuka probably. The tiger is voiced by Michiko Nomura though...

Wish Shizuka was actually in this.

Note that Nomura originally voices Shizuka (from Doraemon series).

While I love Itou Shizuka to pieces (she's my favorite VA), I don't think that there's the right character for her in this show.

o The Seitokaichou role is usually Shizuka-sama's speciality, but here she would "soften" the role too much. The Shizuku-VA needs to be thoroughly menacing and scary in some scenes, and Itou's "menacing" style always has a cute-kind element which simply doesn't belong here. I liked Nazuka Kaori's voice in the 2 lines she got in ep1 already - unquestionable authority, but with a teasing undertone when she feels like it. The episode today will pretty much make or break it, it will be very Shizuku-centric.

o Akane is in good hands with Hocchan. Especially her Kämpfer voice is pitch-perfect - the "normal" version was a bit too squeaky-soft for my tastes, but maybe things will improve (or I'll get more used to it). Itou Shizuka essentially always plays characters with charisma, and "normal" Akane would be too plain. Also, I have difficulties picturing Akane's Kämpfer-"Kusoyarou" cussing from her.

o Mikoto is too genki, there are many better picks here.

o Sakura might have worked out, but it would have altered the character from the original sources a bit. Particularly the "inner Sakura" side later would run into the same issues I already listed for Shizuku: Not threatening-evil enough.

o Natsuru? Hell no. Shizuka-sama can play boyish girls perfectly, but girly boys? The very thought makes me shiver.

o The plushie toys... heck, Shizuka-sama would be wasted on those.

So, this is one of the few shows I could imagine where Itou Shizuka would be no improvement.

Mentar: If I wanted Itou Shizuka in here, it would be for the role of Shizuku only. I did mention Shizuka would be a great candidate for her before they released the full cast list many pages back. I'm fully aware of how the other roles would be a waste of her talent.

But like you said, Nazuka is so far doing a pretty decent job in her few dialogues, let's hope she keeps this up.
