Uwoh! Very solid episode...! can't find a single thing to complain about... Good character development for some characters (Raven especially needed some), decently entertaining gags, cute Alice, and that last scene when the girl got pulled into the shadows was... (´；ω；｀)
Lots of great characters in this anime... Break, especially, has impressed me. Loved the scene where he and Oz talked about not trusting people who hide things... Though I was more surprised at Oz in this scene.

The heroine sat back this episode, huh. Little role today.
Iya, iya~, there were some rewards for that, so OK, OK~ <-like her sleeping face!(・∀・)

Ah~... Nazuka Kaori... No wonder that voice sounded familiar... Nu... Nunnalliiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii!!!!!!!

Well, Alice's "SHAAA" was a lot cuter in the Drama CD. Still missing Yukari Tamura, meh.
Overall, I really liked this episode. There was a bit too much talking, but I'd take some entertaining talking over risking a bad quality fight scene. The vast majority of it was still frames and repeating frames, but the art itself looks to be improving. Also saw a lot of experimental directing throughout the episode... Although whether the scene towards the beginning with Oz and Break is "artistic" or "lazy" can be arguable. It reminded me a lot of Shaft though. But besides that, I liked the rest of the stylized scenes. Except for the QUALITY carriage.
Raven finally gets a decent amount of lines, woohoo! Toriumi makes a very good Raven. I am pleased. He was making a couple poses too many while walking, though...
The flower girl scenes were very well done. The part where she got dragged into the Abyss was a lot more emotional than in the manga. Kaori Nazuka, huh. They got a pretty high-up seiyuu for a minor role. But of course I'm not complaining.
Also, the scene with the single flower petal drifting away towards the end? Why did that get the most fluid animation this entire episode?

This episode made me go between finding some moments funny and some moments just PISSED ME OFF! Another episode that got me angry and raging.
What I liked:

Spoiler:

-Break was funny but he also PISSED ME OFF in this episode. More of a piss off than a person that was to have humor.
-Reactions of OZ were funny with some faces he made.
-Reactions of Alice were also funny at some points.
-The town was nice and the food (meat brochettes anyone).
-The flower girl was nice.
-OZ's gentleman ways with the flower girl.
-Raven was cool with his cigarette however he pissed me off at one point by being STUPID of stopping OZ and not releasing the seal.
-The notion of those who have contracts with chains that when the time passes on the seal the chain goes back to the Abyss. That is interesting.

What I did not like:

-Break being a JACK ASS with OZ by telling him crap! You really believe what he says? BS! He has some evil shit going on behind and I DON'T LIKE IT AT ALL!
-The perverted piece of s*** guy that touched the flower girl! What a pervert!
-The people killed by this piece of crap chain monster! DAMN SHIT EATS PEOPLE! O_O WTF! I did not give a ass about the guy with his rings but THE MAIDS AND GIRLS DEAD!? F THAT ALL THE WAY! I HATED THAT! Dead people are dead! Damn it!
-Raven being a JACK ASS of not helping OZ to rescue that flower girl. THAT IS THE WORST! HOW CAN THEY DO THAT! Curse it!
-The way Raven was acting inside the caravan! That was stupid! I also did not like his attitude there and found not funny but ANNOYING INSTEAD!

That was a good start in the episode of OZ being funny!


Another one yet that I liked the faces are funny along with the expressions.

Was a good one to have OZ hold on Alice's rage. Yet another funny face one.


LOL! LOL! Alice was so funny here.


This the first part I HATED! Break talking like that to OZ gave me :frozen2::frozen2: feelings.


Yet another part I HATED! That guy is perverted and loli perverts in real life I HATE! Good thing this is a anime but I still don't like that even in anime.


That IS A CUTE SCENE! OZ being offered a flower by the girl.


It was even better when put the flower offered to him on the girls head! Awwwww, so cute of OZ!


THE BEST! OZ acting like a gentleman! I LOVED THAT PART MOST! SUCH A NICE BOY HE IS!


Ok, I got to admit that Raven made go for a cigarette because of this scene. I LOVE COOL GUYS THAT SMOKE IN ANIME!


I found EXTREMELY interesting the whole notion of time, contract, abyss and seal. It was interesting and revealing.


Yet again another part THAT PISSED ME OFF IN THIS EPISODE! I did not care for the guy who died around there but I was really pissed off about those girls here. NOT FAIR! STUPID ASS MONSTER! DIE ALREADY!


THE STUPID CHAIN MONSTER! HE LOOKS UGLY! He looks also something to kill and not feal F all for it.


Another part I disliked! The flower girl suffering so much! DAMN T_T She did not deserve and I have my suspicions around that she was forced by that monster somehow


SECOND MOST HATED PART! Raven should have moved his ass to remove the seal instead of holding down OZ! RAVEN ARE A RETARDED MORON? You should have rescued that girl damn it!


Another stupid part! I DID NOT LIKE, Raven the way he was acting. I did not find this part funny but on the contrary ANNOYING AS HELL! At least Alice scored some pillow points on Raven!

Solid episode. I will have to say that the humor and the mystery mix quite well in this episode.

Some key points have been expanded, though these may still confuses the non-manga reader. Although to be fair, this episode is about introducing Raven's character and got more heavy dialogue on the key points. Gotta admit I have a quite hard time following the conversation at times, but then again,maybe it's because the quality of Raw I downloaded :/ The audio got messed up at times that I just have to listen so closely to make out the easy conversations...

The flower girl that got dragged by the end of the episode is indeed, very emotional. It's really breaking my heart seeing the girl trying to release the Chain's hold at the very last second... Not to mention the blood that stained her hands at that very part makes it creepier.

Although I have to admit the carriage scene is a really funny moments. Moe Alice confessing about how she made her contract and Raven just being a snarky person he is (in the beginning) just result in a really funny moments~ XD

Oh and that "Ah! Papa~!" short dialogue. I can't stop laughing seeing that one made it way to the anime. Although generally speaking it's natural for Raven to act as the protector of both Alice and Oz (seeing, you know, Oz being the younger and more impulsive for now and Alice while already lived longer being a chain, just doesn't know etiquette sometimes), I just can't remove the imagination of his mother hen attitude in this episode.

The creepy part that got me (aside from the flower girl scenes): The laughing girl in the end. Can't believe it give my body a bit of shudder

But on the other side, moe Alice's sleeping face, the "SHAAA!!" and her bitching with Raven is just soooooooo cute~ And Raven's cool moments are making my fangirl heart in love~ Good Job for Toriumi in voicing him!

(Too bad I just can't see him in drunken state considering the total episodes limitation But oh well~)

Episode 5 was very good. New info on the Chains and illegal contracts. I thought there would be big battle this episode. We did get a big Chain attacking but no battle. Man, the episode surprised me with the creepiness. The girl dragged into the Abyss. It was quite emotional and scary.

Luckily there were quite a lot light hearted scenes this episode. The interactions between characters, funny carriage scene and cute Alice!!!

Looking forward to the next episode!

Flower girls in general at that time in English history were like 1 foot away from prostitution anyways. The last step before prostitution. She's in particularily good condition. It is possible that she was also doing prostitution to stay alive. You can't survive just by selling wildflowers that were pulled from a park somewhere. Victorian Romance Emma season 1 touched on this particular issue.

Actually, considering the characters shown in the OP, the anime might get up to around chapter 32. Which includes that chapter~ I'm just hoping that they don't cut it out as manga filler. :/

I think the one-chapter-per-episode pace is kind of slow, but then again two chapters per episode might be too fast. Either way the anime's going to have an open ending (or an anime original one, but I can't see that working out at all) since the manga's still ongoing and seemingly nowhere near finished. I really like some of the chapters later on though, so I won't complain if they speed up the pace to cover more material.

Spoiler for Not really a spoiler, but just in case:

Doldam(or Doldum?) is the name of Zwei's(the one who kidnapped Gil in episode one) chain. There was about a 1-second shot of her in episode two, and she'll appear again in the next episode if the anime's still following the manga. I don't remember her having a speaking role at all in the manga though, so I'm not sure why the role even exists...

Yeah, here's more info. Quite different from that family-friendly reputation that people hear about. Victorian Romance Emma Season 2 gave examples of how women and girls were tricked into prostitution.

Spoiler for ep.5:

Status was key back then and that girl was at the bottom of the economic ladder which could be how she got taken advantage of by the Chain. Her life was screwed, condemned to a harsh life and an early death. She can't climb that economic ladder to a nice life. No access to education either. No rescue from Oz either. He put a flower in her hair and let her continue her crappy existence without paying her for the flower. Feeling screwed over with no way out could be what was fueling her murder spree from her end. Which could be why as she was dragged down into the Abyss you see blood on her hands also as part of her wanted those people dead.

But I'm waiting for subs to see how much of this I'm correct about. That girl was a nice bit of tragedy and social commentary.
