cyberpunk

I'm looking for a recommendation of a good cyberpunk series. I've seen everything Ghost in the Shell related (except GitS 2.0), I've been in awe of it all. I've seen the two Appleseed movies(they were my first animes that I really liked too). Ergo Proxy bored me to no end with the excessive "let's keep everything plot-related a secret from the spectator or covered with tons of obscure babble" and "let's use as much dark color as possible to emphasize something genre-related". I might have enjoyed its philosophy references I've heard of but I couldn't bear with it for long. I've heard controversial replies about other known series, so I'd like suggestions based on the above. Related genre suggestions are welcome too, like steampunk for example, to expand my anime culture. Thank You =)

Akira

Ghost in the Shell and Akira both share a similar theme: the relationship between science/technology and humanity. In Akira, this relationship is shown in a completely negative light, showing technology as a potentially lethal force. It shows us that, one day, technology might just destroy us. In Ghost in the Shell, it says technology and humans will eventually become interchangeable! In that, we could just lose our humanity. It is, more or less, a very haunting notion, and each of the anime show it in a sometimes chilling light. The only difference is that Akira has a lot more violence, while Ghost in the Shell is more philosophical.

Battle Angel Alita

Both Battle Engine Aquila and Ghost in the Shell are (at least partly) centered on a main character being a cyborg, and her questioning regarding her status as a human being, or what's left of her humanity. Both of these anime take place in a similar kind of cyberpunk world, and although the stories and goals of the characters are diferent, both give a very similar feeling to the global story.

I am not really interested in this kind of anime, but here is some good recommendations:

Bus gamer: A 3-episode ova about 3 guys teaming up to play a business game, which includes nothing of good nature or perhaps, you can think of it as cyberpunk in underworld setting.

Real Drive: It starts off with a scuba diver getting a concussion during one of his missions along with some old friends and ended up hospitalized for a few decades. When he wakes up, he has already lost his youth and became an old man, while his old friends have already passed away for awhile. The world from what he remembered is no longer the same and it has already became very advanced to the point in which people can enter virtual reality simulations to go back into the past and see why the world has became as it is. Sounds interesting? Aside from that, this anime can be considered a "slice of life" drama, but androids do exist in this new era.

Texhnolyze: I have no idea what it is, but if you click on the AniDB link, it will give you an idea of how the protagonist looks like (a replacement robotic arm) and also the synopsis.

Serial Experiments Lain. Most WTF series I've ever seen. I think I liked it, but I was really left too confused to really know. Defiantly Cyber, not sure about Punk.

Blame! the manga is the most cyberpunk-ish suggestion. The animated shorts don't make sense without having already read the manga. GitS is soft cyberpunk when compared to Blame!.
