If I want perpetual reality TV, I watch C-Span. That, and Diane Feinstein can kiss my ass. But, if I just want to be entertained, I watch Girls und Panzer. I absolutely abhor grimdark settings with bittersweet/downer endings. If I am going to put myself through 10+ episodes of development, I better see hard-work rewarded (ie. happiness!) - Tak (Fiction is for fun and joy, I am already surrounded by enough perpetual seriousness, death & tears in reality.)

Never change a winning formula.
Why should GuP become more serious/realistic? What's wrong with the show the way it is now? Isn't the combination of cute school girls driving tanks in a non-lethal, yet competitive and semi-realistic way exactly that which attracts so many people? If they wanted it to be serious, they should've done so from the start. Doing it now would most likely mean that the producers would be shooting themselves in the foot. Only temper with the formula if the reception is getting worse.

I've heard it's kinda successful, but I sure as hell don't want to watch that. |

Thanks for all answers.
I asked this question because I saw some people who disliked and dropped this anime early said something like "The show would be better if the plot is more serious" or "They should change the setting to a military school insted" It's too bad 'cute school girls driving a tank' is not their cup of tea. (Look like I also succeeded in generating more discussion) Quote:

Personally I had it with melodramatic, over the top death cries, and open endings after Code Geass!
Girls und Panzer like Strikewitches is meant to be a fun poke at WW2 with cute girls driving real tanks. Strikewitches was similar except for the alien thing and the fact they were witches, it was still the Battle of Britain none the less. In today's world a little fantasy ties a long way, and we can all use it!

I think the school/tournament/Saki-in-tanks setting was a good framework for the series. While we did plenty of nitpicking over things like Type 89 and Matilda ground speeds, penetration chances, Miho riding unbuttoned, etc., I think the discussion would have sunk straight down into that hole if it had been presented as a very realistic/grimdark series.
And I am rather bored with grim series. Reality is kinda sucky, I don't need anime trying to find ways for it to be suckier. |

Okey, lets begin the next question. This time a funny one.
If Girls und Panzer's cast are changed from all-girls to all-boys (everything else - art style, plot, setting, sense of humor, etc. are still the same) and its name is 'Boys und Panzer'. (Oh, of couse, these boys will be likeable and funny!) Do you think the anime's reception will be the same?, worst?, or better?

You know, it's not unimaginable that there's a Senshado team out there who is so much into military procedure that they'll talk in precisely such a manner during matches.
