Berg's actions, reminds me of a player in a sandbox game just letting it loose in the middle of populated areas just for shitz and giggles.

Casualties are different than deaths. That just means injured. Although it's possible some of them actually died.

So Utsutsu is spaced out because her attention is divided between too many bodies it seems. And her species has some sort of life drain or something.

I wonder if we'll see Hajime hug her anyways before the end. She's crazy enough.

Anything is possible. Might just say something about OD, but did manage to calmly hold Utsutsu's hand to return that paper from Hajime.

Was it just me or did OD used a surprisingly deeper voice in this episode during that scene?

Well I had my suspicions in the previous episode but now it really looks like they're setting up GALAX to be a sort of Sibyl system "Rely on it at the cost of your humanity" except with notable good points. What I'm not exactly sure on is how the population can be so dumb to believe that GALAX could replace essential societal infrastructure in it's current form when it also relies of people coming from them in the first place. Replacing job centres is fair enough if it really is that good, but definitely not essential services. Well let's just see how it rolls: The disaster at the end of the show also apparently reduced the people's trust in GALAX so maybe they aren't fully going down that route.

Spoiler for negative rant:

There's one thing I'll give the show credit for though, and that's casting Miyano as Berg. Last episode, I thought Berg was just going to be an annoying cheap villain but Mamoru really took that character and ran with it. That was pretty impressive.

Ep 4 confirmed, Berg Katze is Him from the Powerpuff Girls. Especially with Miyano being off the leash. xD

As for the episode, I think it was a very good one, I don't think there were any particular problems with the pacing on transitions. I do think the pieces are not fully together yet, but with basic character and setting introductions done, they can start building the plot and have everything fall together. The only thing that I felt was out of place in this ep was Utsutsu's talk with Hajime and her little spot of angst. That was pretty random.

I'm glad that OD has finally stopped with the over the top okama act, though, even if only temporarily. I hope we'll get to see him interacting with Katze. His talk with Paiman made me pretty curious about his past and his power.

About Jou, though, holy mother of death flags! All that was missing is Jou talking about his family or a girl he wants to propose to or something. I really hope he won't die the next episode, we barely know anything about him!

I thought that moment was building up since episode 3, when Hajime gave Utsutsu a piece of paper and later that day OD told her to make friends with her.

My problem is that I felt it was out of place in context of the episode, not necessarily Hajime's talk with her, but her almost immediately reacting with "I don't want this anymore." I understand it led into Rui's flashback, but that's precisely the reason I felt it out of place, it didn't feel like an organic part of the episode... or rather, it was too transparent. In any case it was nothing horrible, I can live with it.

I didn't see too many death flags. We don't know the purpose of those animated paper birds. And watching Saint Seiya, protags saying "I will defeat you." is par for the course and not a death flag. Plus, since his character description hasn't been fulfilled in the anime (relationship with Hajime), he's prob okay for now.

Weeell, there was his decision to go against orders and fight Katze, Sugane's hero worship (imagine how he'd react to someone killing Jou), his friend telling him he was back to his old self, plus the burning paper bird. And while we didn't see any meaningful interaction between him and Hajime, he did stop "running away" and being all world-weary and cynical, and regained what seems to be his original motivation, so... But I hope you're right and I'm just reading too much into things.

If anything Sugane would be up for the death flag. He has absolutely nothing in his character description that could delay an early demise whereas Jou hasn't developed a relationship with Hajime yet. In fact, he's been avoiding her.

Well, that's exactly what his character description says he does. He started to change because of her, but they never develop a relationship because he keeps avoiding her.

As for Sugane, he's Hajime's main sidekick (sort of like Gourry from Slayers) so he probably has a pretty thick plot armor.

The character description also mentioned him referring to her and himself a certain way etc that hasn't happened yet. None of this won't happen for a while. The descriptions imply something else entirely. More a triangle.

No, he calls her "ojou-chan" in episode 4. I don't remember if he ever called himself an old man, though.

That already happened in this episode. He calls her ojou-chan which CR translated simply as "miss".

Anyway, let's just wait and see what happens.

EDIT: welp, got ninja'd by kuromitsu

But their use implies something different in English. ("Old lady" and 'old man" type of referrals implies a "relationship". Instead, "little miss" is used here.) The set up hasn't happened yet, especially if those words are used together.

We can just wait and see.

Well, the way Joe acts with Berg sort of mirrors the original series. I just hope it won't end up in the same way.

I have to wonder what went through their mind when they gave him a name like that.

Anyway it would be better to tell the others about the alien in every imaginable scenario. What's the point of keeping it a secret.

You'd have to ask the original creators that question. Berg Katze was the main villain in the original Gatchaman back in 1972.
