I think he really means, no mecha
So that means, scrap every gundam show + all shows that have giant robots : /

Since its Sunrise in this post:

You probably won't want to touch the old school Gundam series, good though if you are interested. Other than that, the better of the later Gundam series.

Turn A Gundam
Gundam 00 season 1 + 2 = 52 episodes

But the best Sunrise anime ever is Yuusha Oh Gaogaigar + OVA, Gaogaigar Final. If you continue through the 50 + 8 episodes, it will be the most epic show you would have ever watch for a 50+ episode anime.
i dont think gundam seed is great or owt, dont get me wrong - i just cant think of many ''50+'' that are good...however seed and wing are prolly my fav gundams.

Look no more, check this one out:

Meitantei Conan

By the end of the week, there will be a total of 516 episodes, not mentioning that it doesn't stop here and will continue onwards. (^_^)

Do you like detective stories? then try Detective Academy Q, 45 ep with great characters and mind-warping cases.

I understand you said no mecha, but as a fellow Full Metal Alchemist fan, I can't not suggest Eureka Seven. 50 episodes, this anime is most similar to FMA in many aspects. Main similarity? boy growing up. If you're really worried about mecha, then don't, because characterisation and storyline are much more what the anime is about than mecha.
