Yep, pretty damn sad.
But still great.

Loved the slow-mo on everyone's faces and movements when Ronja jumped. But damn, Mattis! To say something like that! ;A;

Also Birk came out with him and Ronja being siblings. Lolz at his mother's reaction:
"We all know where this will end in a couple years."
XD

And next episode those two are already moving in together. Bet Undis didn't expected that to happen so quickly. XDDD

I didn't expect the depressing story like newest 2 episodes because I forgot original story completely.
But in other hand, they are greatest episodes definitely.

btw recently, if you use violence on child, your character would be rejected by society.
After all, the world of now a day is better.

Episode 17 was so delicious! That scene with the Moon shining through the trees, the whole forest at night atmosphäre and ofc Ronja and Birk moving together, everything was great. <3

Poor Mama and robbers though, with Ronja gone, having fun will be harder than usual. :c

Mattis is like a vegetable at this point.^^;

I think Birk just "stole" the biggest treasure from Mattis castle, and it came to him willingly. Those two are just so adorable whenever they are together, they got a great chemistry and are all around loveable characters! Kinda wished I could watch next week's episode already. <3

The true greatness of Lindgren's story is really shining through now that Birk and Ronja are together - it's magical in the best sense, with a much harder edge than most children's stories. It shines through the abominable CGI and Ronja's mediocre seiyuu and the earlier bad pacing, and the lovely Ghibli backgrounds and Takebe Satoshi's soundtrack are a large part of the appeal.

This is very good to hear ... I was planning on steamrolling this series when it was completed, and it is heartening to hear from several people that it appears to be getting progressively better (despite the negatives).

lol...I think if something disappointed someone, presupposition that it was needed is necessary.

IMO I don't want supeeerb CGI for this little Northern juvenile series.
And Ronja's seiyuu is my favourite. Well, at least she is acting typical Ghibli heroine.
Is this a matter of the level of expectations?

I think we can safely conclude that Ronja is a "screamer". Birk so gonna be deaf when he gets older with her. XDDD

Looks like they got off to a not so bad start, not perfect given the gray dwarves eat one of their breads but still, all in all pretty nice start. They seem to manage well at least.

And ofc they worry what their parents and the otehr robbers must think of them back home. Bet all of them are worried to no end.

Next episode will be about the lost knife which is the most precious and important item they got. And they will have a fight about it. Like "gimme the knife", "I don't have the knife" "what ya mean, you got no knife", etc.

But hey, every couple has a fight or two, right? :P

All the talk about how they'd better not lose the knife because it was their most important tool and they couldn't survive without it made me think of an old Bloom County running gag. "Foreshadowing: Your clue to quality literature."

Edited to add: And here's a link to that. You can find anything online these days... http://www.thecomicstrips.com/store/add.php?iid=83433

I loved the scene with the gray dwarves all running out of the cave and going over the cliff. That was a true Ghibli moment, CGI or no CGI.

Definitely. That was perfect.

The whole "Don't lose the knife, it's the most precious thing we have" did make it pretty obvious they're going to lose the knife.

Ronja's dream at the end was quite sad though. I do wonder what's happening back at the forts. Has Mattis come out of his funk yet, or is Lovis going to have to give him a good slap?

I love the dynamic with Ronja and Birk together - they're "playing house" yet clearly, there's more going on here (which is a typical vibe with Lindgren). I think Birk could actually make this work on his own - he's quite grounded and clearly well-versed on survival skills, and his emotional attachment to home seems far less strong. Ronja OTOH is impetuous and sheltered, and clearly still tied to her mother's apron strings. The coming conflict between them is foreshadowed as plainly as the losing of the knife.

Been following this show for awhile but not commented on it much. I just love the recent free spirited atmosphere now that Ronja and Birk are out in the nature by themselves. It also shows their independence and will to survive and they already demonstrated some of that through basic hunting/fishing skills.

I am expecting more development in their relationship soon as well but this show imo is at exactly where I hoped for it to be right now.

Based on the next week episode PV...

The series is at its best right now with Birk and Ronja being on their own. The budding relationship between them is so cute to watch, and their daily lives and chores with the forest backdrop is very enjoyable to watch. I'm really liking this series.

Even when it's not Hayao Miyazaki (although it is from his son), anything from Ghibli is always a joy to watch -- makes me sad to think that Ghibli won't be around anymore. I'm really going to miss these heartwarming and relaxing movies and series.

Speaking of which, Suzuki-sama was on TV today and said "The studio is open, but we'e not doing anything."

That moment near the end of the episode, where Ronja looked up at Birk patting the horse when the sun came up... Not exactly a tough one to interpret.

The experience of watching subbed anime sure has changed in the streaming era.

Our long nightmare is over...

It should probably go without saying, but if you're not watching this series you owe it to yourself to catch up. You had to figure Ghibli + Lindgren was going to be magic, and it is. It's a reminder of what a tragedy it will be if Ghibli passes from the anime world - they truly have a gift that not even Polygon can obscure.
