Don't be so cheap. I am happy that US company is more and more aware of anime and bringing to the mainstream.

Sigh... again I'm hearing the "L" word.... it looks like the anime makers are getting smarter and smarter at making money.... its good for some of you its licensed but for ppl like me... over here in msia... there ain't no way we'll get our hands on those DVDs unless we buy it at a really nice USD exchange rate on Amazon... either that or wait for like a lifetime for it to come out here... which normally takes FOREVER!!!!!! If ANY of the the companies buying license read this take note that WE PPL HERE HAVE LITTLE OPPORTUNITY TO WATCH CAUSE WE DON"T HAVE COMPANIES WHICH SPECIALISE in licensing animes here!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ok... so much for my distress on not being able to find FMA on the market... anyway... about this show... I think its nice although at times things seem a bit far fetched to me... agreed with the gigantic metal fellar... he's just clumsy and a big clutz..... I wonder if Katsushiro will get stronger... guy with mop hair is cool... although the only uncool thing I find about him is his mop hairdo... LOL.... like his name too... Kyuuzo.... Anyone who watched the previous movie know any good places I could read about it? |

1. If I start watching an anime and then it gets licensed then that sucks because it may be quite a while before I can see the rest of the series. For example, I wonder how long it will be before the Fullmetal Alchemist DVD's are released and catch up to ep. 30. 2. I can only afford to buy a series very rarely because (big surprise) anime isn't cheap. I'm 21 and helping to put myself through college. I'm also saving up for a car. I've got plenty of financial burdens. I can be sad because I know I won't be able to buy all the series that have just been licensed and thus I won't be able to see them. Hence, I have lost them. Criticizing someone because they are worried about being able to AFFORD to watch anime isn't terribly kind

Response is OFFTOPIC but that post must be responded to:

Amazon is one of the few places that will ship to Malaysia. You can also try DVD Pacific (www.dvdpacific.com) - they have a smaller range but give a higher discount rate over the Suggested Retail Price (SRP) than Amazon and they ship to Malaysia. Another place that ships to Malaysia worth looking into is the Australian site EzyDVD (www.ezydvd.com.au). They sell licensed R4 anime DVDs - think USD SRP but in AUD, i.e. instead of USD29.95 for a like R1 volume, the R4 volume goes for AUD29.95, a good saving there if you ask me. Look around. If you want more info about how to get licensed DVDs at cheaper prices and to ship them back into Malaysia, you can PM me. Quote:

Anyway, just be patient. FMA is too popular a series to put on the backburner for Funimation. Quote:

this series is so-so...
I mean it would be fabulous if it actually had originality.. Instead of taking all the names, story line, and even direct dialogue from one of the best classic movies of all time. Don't bother to DL this if you're somewhat enlightened and have seen the original Seven Samurai by Kurosawa. |

I've seen the original Seven Samurai. I feel that this show is a great homage to his work, but I am disappointed that it doesn't stand so well entirely on its own. Despite this flaw, it is still one of the best shows of the season. I love the parts of it that are lifed from the original movie for the sense of nostalgia they bring me and I love the original parts because they are so well done.

Another Malaysian? Good, that makes 3 of us here. I buy the animes I like very much on licensed DVD, from US. True they are not cheap, that is fansub is for, previewing animes before investing in a expensive DVD boxsets. I just got Gunslinger Girl DVD from Japan, with gorgeous cover and artwork. Usually when the anime is licensed, I watch the raws for while waiting for the legit DVD come out so I buy them. Anime industry need $$$ and the one way they will get more money is by selling the legit DVDs. You can't honestly expect them to earn money solely thru TV airing time, merchandising or all that sort. If too many people watch rips and pirates, I worried for the future for the industry because if disequilibirium happens, guess what, no more animes for me to watch. Also if they get more money, they maybe can produce more quality animes for the world. wsheit: You can rent or get better paying job. Or sell off your car if you so desperate for anime. Or you get a job, settle down and come back to anime hobby. Anime is a luxury, not life. You can at least postpone your anime hobby to get into financial position right? That's what life is all about.

Sorry to take the thread off topic, but I had to explain myself...and I don't think I'm alone here. So I hope Samurai doesn't get licensed yet- that I get to see it all. And if it continues to be as good as it has been so far.....well, then I'll definitely buy the DVD's when I can afford them.

It's a great homage, and personally, I found myself very surprised at how much it captured the essence of the original work. I'm particularly impressed with how much they're sticking to the central themes and reworking much of the symbolism without cheapening it (at least not too much in most cases). I can't say that I love it, nor that I'm completely satisfied with how some elements were handled (as well as some specific scenes), but it's clear that the writers, producers, director, etc. are all lovers of the original and are definitely trying to do the material justice. Put simply, this could have been infinitely worse *cough*Seven Samurai 20XX*cough* Anyone bashing this series is simply being pretentious and/or anal. - Z |

im really enjoying this anime so far. i really like the subtle similarities (aside from the obvious) between the original and this animated remake. for example, the scene when the old samurai advises the younger to position himself by the entrance to the room and be prepared to strike the other samurai as he enters. whoever is acting as Kikuchiyo (personal fav) has done an excellect job. Unable to rem the characters names at first, I immediately knew he was portraying Toshiro Mifune's character. As already stated, the remake does pay homage to kurosawa and his film. If still alive, I think he would be appreciative of the anime.

I'm loving this series so far too. The music, the well-defined setting, and a bunch of interesting characters. I also found some parts in the anime that reminded me of the original movie to be a nice touch. I'm just somewhat disappointed with Toshiro Mifune's character though. He should've been a human--not a robot! Still, I immediately knew it was him, and I guess the adaptation was nevertheless smooth.

Oh my god... I'm having seizures now.... I wonder if its been two weeks yet......
*twitch* *twitch* *shake* *Twitch* *Shake* Ok.....suffering from lack of Samurai 7 syndrome... anyway.... i'm a bit blur about something if my question leads to a spoiler... someone use spoiler tags and answer me.... i get the part where the people seem to be ruled by some mechanised samurais right.... but i don understand where these mechanised samurais came from and why the village they are in now is ruled by merchants.... its like I don't get the difference between the two groups since the merchants also have some skilled mechanical samurais helping them right? I'm confused... I get who the village peple are .... so are the merchants and the mech samurais different groups? same? or do they have some sort of agreement? what? why don't they attack the merchants? |

About your confusion: there are basically 3 seperate groups that have been shown. The first is of course the poor villager and the crew of crazy/wierd samurai they managed to find, the mechanised bandit gang they have to fight and the merchant class in the city that's obsessed with wealth and keeping a strict class structure. The very act of the villagers of gathering a small band of people to fight for them can be seen as a threat to the wealthy elite. After all, who knows where they will turn their swords to after dealing with the bandits? It may be that the merchant class will try to get the bandits to help supress any possibe uprising but that's already reading too far into the show. Ack- have to wait a terminally long time even before the latest raws show up |
